Rebelde Way 1×103: Risk and Other Board Games

Opening monologue: Life is a road, we have to learn to take risks and be brave, blah blah blah.

We pick up where we left off, with everyone finding out that Mansilla’s a MURDERER! Gasp, shock! Mansilla gets all flustered and runs away and everyone’s like, “Well, this is not what we expected when we came to class.” It occurs to me that the administration should’ve known about this? Do they not run background checks? (Just kidding, I know they don’t. Just look at Blas.)

Mia, on the other hand, has missed all the drama because she’s crying in her room over Sonia moving to Spain. Feli, God love her, is not exactly comforting, and Mia runs off to go cry alone some more. Once she leaves, Feli pulls out a hidden stash of junk food and starts eating, to the surprise of no one.

Marizza is also missing all the class drama, because she’s off harassing Douchey Diego. Isn’t he in their class? Shouldn’t they both be in Mansilla’s class right now? Whatever. She like…wants to make sure that he won’t let Lujan use to him avoid Marcos, and makes him promise that he won’t talk to Lujan. Like Lujan was ever in danger of being asked out by him anyway. I bet Marizza getting involved will only make it worse. Anyway, Diego is all confused as to why Marizza threw him up against a wall to ask him to do something that he was already doing, but he agrees not to go out with Lujan.

At Casa Colucci, Papa C tries to gently break it to Mercedes that this whole living-together thing is not working. He suggests that they stay together, but just not cohabitate. That sounds like a relationship that’s going to end well. Mercedes is not pleased.

The class gathers to talk about Mansilla. Luna says she trusts Mansilla with her life, and they all agree that Renata has some explaining to do. Well, except for Pilar, who’s just like, “Whatever, he’s probably a murderer, who cares.” Nico’s like, “Why are you even here?” They’ll never get to the bottom of the mystery with that attitude! Mia has to ask Feli what’s going on, and Feli tells her about Mansilla being a murderer, which is weird because Feli was in the room with her when the whole thing went down. Whatever. They all want to run off and talk to Mansilla, but then Renata comes in and tells them they’re going to do more math, seeing as it’s the only other subject they study anymore. They protest (as usual), and Manuel sneaks out in the ensuing chaos. Naturally he bumps right into Blas, and they have a pissing match over whether or not Blas will let him see Mansilla. Eventually Manuel appeals to Blas’s better nature (read: vaguely insults his manhood), and Blas lets him go, in exchange for Manuel not getting him fired. He snaps that they’re even, though, and Blas doesn’t owe him anything.

Sandra decides that since she hasn’t had much to do in the past few episodes, she should get her meddle on in Luna’s love life. She calls Mama Provenza and says they should meet up to talk about their kids, and Mama Provenza is unsurprisingly not thrilled about meeting up with her son’s ex’s meddling aunt. She hangs up, and Sandra’s all, “How very dare!” She calls her back and leaves a super rude message and is like, “Nobody fucks with Luna on my watch!” Sure, I bet insulting her will really endear Luna to her.

Back in class, Renata finally notices that Manuel’s snuck out. Hey, with these shitty supervision skills, she’s really fitting right in! They BS her with some excuse, and she buys it. Mia sneaks over to Marizza and tells her that they have to stop Sonia from leaving for Spain, and Marizza’s like, “But how?” Mia’s like, “Idk, you’re the planner in this group.” Hee.

rebelde13701

Renata tells them that she’s decided on the Math Olympics reps, and they’re going to send Luna (“She’s as pretty as she is smart!” Tomás cheers. Aw!) and Nico. Nico’s all twitterpated, as Avril Lavigne plays in the background (as usual). I predict they’ll have made it through her whole first album by the end of this season. After class, Luna congratulates Feli on losing weight, which seems like kind of a dick move, but whatever. She asks how Feli is still managing to snack on junk food and keep the weight off, and Feli chirps that she only eats one snack a week now.

In a strange reversal, Mansilla is sitting alone in the gym emoing, and Manuel has to come in and give him a pep talk — blah blah all the kids love him and want to see him, he’s the only teacher they like, blah. Mansilla says he needs some more time to cry and listen to Linkin Park, but he’ll be back soon. As Manuel leaves, Mansilla pulls out a photo (a note? it’s not shown), and stares at it.

rebelde16301

Luca tells Papa C that he’s a fuckup at this fashion job (Papa C’s like, “Yup”), and so he’s moving to Spain. Papa C’s like, “I knew you’d break up with Sonia eventually!” Luca’s like, “Au contraire, I’m going with her! We’re more in love than ever!” Papa C’s like, “Yikes.”

After class, all the kids huddle in the cafeteria and muse over Mansilla. Renata comes in and they press her for more details, but she refuses to give them and flounces off. Pablo says that they have to fight for Mansilla. They must be rebelde! Manuel tells Pablo that Mansilla’s in the gym, but when Pablo goes, Mansilla isn’t there. He’s left his photo-slash-note behind, though, and Pablo finds it. “What is this?” he wonders. Dude, I want to know, too.

Commercial break! Did you know this is the last weekend to see Erreway live?

rebelde14401

Lujan tries to hit on Diego, and he’s like, “…awkward.” Tomás observes this and is like, “Dude, you got Lujan to talk to you without threatening violence? You should totally go for it.” Once again, I love how completely non-discriminatory Tomás is about who he and his friends date. Diego says that Marizza doesn’t want him to date Lujan, and Tomás is like, “Who gives a shit what Marizza says?” Heh.

Over at the theater, Pepa is trying to convince Sonia not to go. She’s all like, “You can’t just abandon your teenage daughter and go to another continent.” I can’t believe I’m living in a world where Pepa is the voice of reason. Sonia wails that she’s a bad mother, and so…running away and ditching her daughter makes her a better mother? I don’t know. She stomps off, so she’s not there when Papa C swings by to talk to Pepa. He flatters her into telling him what’s up with Sonia and Luca running off to Spain together. Oh, Pepa.

rebelde33601

Mama D comes in to the classroom for their English class and tells them to pair up to work. No one wants to work with Pilar, and when Mama D asks why, they’re like, “Ask your daughter.” Pilar panics and runs out of the room. I’m confused. Are they all pissed at her for her douchey comments about Mansilla, or did Luna tell them Pilar was the one to reveal Mia and Blas? It’s not clear. Anyway, Mama D follows and Pilar cries to her that she wants them to send her to another school.

rebelde35001

Mansilla tells Dunoff he’s not going to resign, and snaps that if they do go ahead and fire him, there will be an uproar, on account of the fact that Mansilla’s the only competent teacher. And then I guess he disappears, because Pablo and Tomás come into the office looking for him, and he’s nowhere to be found. They try to BS Gloria into giving them his number — Pablo lies that it’s Mansilla’s wedding anniversary, and they want to congratulate him. Gloria tells them Mansilla isn’t married, and Pablo finally shows us the photo: of Mansilla with a wife and kid. “If he’s not married, then who’s this?” he wonders.

Mia and Marizza BS Gloria into letting them leave, and they’re all like, “We must find Sonia, because she’s leaving the country right now, immediately!” And then Mia makes them stop so she can go shopping. Oh, Mia. Lucky for them, Sonia is not in fact leaving immediately, she’s emoing in some cafe. Papa C finds her and gives her a pep talk, and then Mia and Marizza find them. They both immediately assume Papa C’s being a dick to Sonia, and jump to her defense. “How can you say your daughter doesn’t love you?” Papa C asks. “She loves you more than mine loves me.” Hee.

rebelde39601

Nico and Luna sit on the stairs together and practice for the Math Olympics, which apparently is just…dividing shit? They’re in high school and they’re still doing long division? They’re going to lose the Olympics for sure. Nico’s like, “You know, I have a calculator in my room.” Smooth. Luna shoots him down and tells him Tomás won’t like it if she goes over there. Denied, Nico!

rebelde45001

She says she’ll go borrow one from Feli, and finds her bag in the classroom. She opens it up and sees all the junk food Feli has stashed in there. Dun dun dun! She runs off and tells Vico, and they muse that Feli can’t be eating that much and still be losing weight. Vico’s like, “Whatever, we’ll let Mia deal with it.” Heh.

All three of the teachers hang out in the teachers’ lounge and gossip about Mansilla. Hilda is of course all indignant, while econ teacher is cackling over finally getting rid of him. (The chem/physics teacher is a nonentity, as usual.) Renata comes in and Hilda is all snarky with her, and says that she’s lying about Mansilla. Renata says she’s not lying: “Mansilla killed all his family!” OH SNAP. Whatever, though, I bet he didn’t. Manuel overhears this and runs off to tell everyone, and then Fernanda swings by to tell them that Etchamendi is going to drag Mansilla out of the school. They’re like, “This cannot stand!”

Marizza and Sonia have a heart-to-heart, and Marizza cries that she’s mean to Sonia because everyone loves Sonia, and Marizza feels ugly and unloved next to her. Sonia’s like, “What, people love you, Lujan is willing to punch out anyone who looks at you funny.” Marizza wails that no boys love her (and none for Marcos and Facundo, bye), and if they ever do, they meet Sonia and lose their minds. Who has ever done that? I mean, except for Mauro and Luca, who were both too old for her anyway. Sonia says that looks aren’t everything, and she’s afraid of getting old and irrelevant. “Is that why you’re going to Spain?” Marizza asks. Sonia’s like, “No, I’m going because abandoning you without warning was the best parenting move I could think of.”

rebelde55301

The kids reflect on this new information about Mansilla and wonder if he really did kill his family. Sandra comes by and shames them all for doubting him. She’s like, “How dare you even wonder if he’s done something wrong! He’s saved all the main and secondary characters several times over! ” and they all have a black-and-white flashback to said times. Whatever. I like how the moral of this show is, “Question everything, except when it’s someone you’re supposed to like.”

rebelde61701

Vico confronts Feli about eating junk food, and Feli stomps over to the scale and shows her that she’s still losing weight. “How can I have lost weight if I broke my diet, huh?” she asks. Vico’s like, “What a mystery!” I guess none of them saw that episode of Lizzie McGuire.

Mercedes stomps around Casa Colucci shrieking that she hasn’t been able to get in touch with Papa C. Peter’s like, “Idk what to tell you man.” Just then, Papa C calls. Mercedes snatches the phone from Peter and Papa C, thinking he’s talking to Peter, tells her that he’s been with Sonia.

rebelde65301

Sandra cleans the cafeteria while ranting to Cata about how much she hates Elite Way. So…don’t work there, then, Sandra. Nico’s mom shows up in the middle of her rant and she’s like, “I’m guessing you’re Sandra.”

Feli finds Luna and starts beating her up for telling Vico about her junk food stash. Ah, remember when Feli hated Luna? What a throwback.

All the kids gather in the main hall to stare Etchamendi down when he shows up. He shoves his way past them to get to the office, and Manuel asks if they’re ready to fight for Mansilla. “I am,” Pablo says. Everyone else is like, “Sure, whatever.” Etchamendi gathers with Dunoff and Mansilla, and Mansilla reiterates that he’s not going anywhere. Etchamendi is like, “Oh. I thought this was gonna be easier.” Then all the kids come storming in and are like, “You’ll have to go through us!”

I used to like this show as a kid and I love your episode “summaries” that describe this show exactly as it is. After watching few episodes again – I think the whole thing is just bizarre and stupid with terrible logic.
The whole thing with Manuel who goes through high school all over again, the whole story with Lujan and her “tutor”(and who it turned out to be) and the whole relationship with Marcos was just…disturbing. But the worst are Nico and Luna plotlines. What the fuck was that?!?!? Sandra is terrible and so is Nico’s mother but what’s about to happen in like few episodes from where you are is just…THEY ARE JUST 15 Year old kids!!!!!!!! They don’t know what they want!!!!!! And a all the adults just agree with them!!!!!! I am done!!!!

Thanks, always glad to amuse 🙂 This show is absolutely ridiculous — I enjoy it, but making fun of it is too easy.

Oh, man, Nico and Luna. I totally understand wanting out of that insane school, but…we’ll get there 😛

Yeah, and I find it totally hilarious how Sandra and Nico’s mother are just made for each other – those two bitches, LOL. I seriously find this the most disturbing plotline in the whole show for some reasons, from the kind that makes you feel really uneasy and say:”was this real? WTF am I watching?!??!”
It’s very obvious that both Luna and Nico came both from very dysfanctional families and that’s why they’re like that(Luna and Nico both feel like they have to please everyone else, are scared of everything and Nico’s constant lies and Luna’s martyr complex), but their solution to all these is so stupid and it presented as noble and “rebellious” because Love Can Conquer ALL!!11
The funny thing was that this was my favorite story when I was like 11 years old but now…
The whole story with Flor was also disgusting – this girl pretended for YEARS to be autistic or something just because she likes the attention! She’s an evil manipulative mastermind just like her Mom, LOL.
Sometimes I wonder if this show was written by a 12 years old…
