Rebelde Way 1×069: The Game Is Afoot

Opening monologue: Love has many faces. Sometimes it’s like a slap-slap-kiss thing, and sometimes it’s actually healthy and supportive. I feel like they’ve done this before.

So the last time we saw Mia, she had just read a note from Gloria and shrieked, “IT CAN’T BE!” I mean, that could be the ending to any episode, but try to keep up. Anyway, Feli and Fernanda note that Mia’s upset, but she says it’s nothing and runs off. I bet it’s not nothing.

In the sad trailer, Pablo and Paula are still working their shit out. Pablo’s like, “Your sad life story was such a turn-on, I love you even more now.” I should say, I saw Marizza in the Youtube still for this episode, so I know shit is about to go DOWN. But we’re not there yet. Anyway, Paula says that if she really wants to get rid of her old life, she needs to ditch her apartment, because her mysterious married keeper (~*~Papa B~*~) knows where she lives. And possibly pays for it? I wasn’t listening too closely. Pablo’s like, “But where are we gonna have sex now?” Just kidding, he says he’ll just ask Papa B for the money to set Paula up somewhere else, but Paula’s like, “NO WAY.” She covers and says she’s an adult (which she is! And Pablo’s a teenager! Just saying!), and she can do it herself. Pablo offers to let her stay in the sad trailer, because that worked out so well for Marizza and Nacho.

Classroom. Dunoff and Blas come in and Dunoff’s like, “I want to tell you that I have definitely listened to your concerns about Blas, and you’re all wrong and Blas is a saint, the end.” Mansilla comes in and is like, “Wow, this is the opposite of good principaling.” Blas gets let off the hook at the end anyway, but Mansilla does make him apologize to Lujan, and everyone claps. Even Mia! I always think it’s cute when Mia backs Lujan up, even a little. Feli in particular goes wild, for some reason. Blas stops Lujan outside and snips that it’s not over, but Lujan just says that she’s not scared of him. She has the power of friendship on her side!

Guido catches up to Mia and asks how she’s feeling, per Vico’s excuse from last episode. Mia doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and Guido cottons on that she was just avoiding him. He’s passive-aggressive about it and Mia feels bad, but I mean, he kind of deserved it for being a creeper. They all go back to class, and Guido tells Pablo and Tomás that Mia got a letter and it upset her. He immediately pins the blame on Manuel, which you gotta admit there’s a bit of a precedent for. Speaking of Manuel, he’s arguing with Julieta for the billionth time. Heh. Poor Manuel, he doesn’t get much to do in this episode besides get chewed out by Julieta and hit on by Fernanda.

Rough life, Manuel.

Hilda comes in and tells them all that they’ll be doing group work. In the ensuing scramble, Guido grabs the letter off of Mia’s desk and reads it. What are boundaries? He’s all shocked by whatever it is, and catches up to Feli after class to ask her about it. She’s like, “Why don’t you ask Mia”, and he’s like, “Because I need to be sneaky, and you know everything about her because you’re her best friend.” “That’s true,” Feli says. Hee! Guido asks who Marina Caceres is, and Feli says that was Mia’s mom. Guido’s like, OH SNAP.

Gloria asks Mansilla to give a letter to Lulu, in a completely unnecessary scene, because Lulu just finds it in the teachers’ lounge a few scenes later. She’s all appalled by whatever it says, and for some reason enlists Tomás in finding out who wrote it. Lulu doesn’t know these kids well at all, does she? I might trust Tomás to tell me the time, but that’s about it. Possibly not even that. Nevertheless, Tomás agrees.

Weird scene in the cafeteria. Sandra’s all proud of Luna for being rebelde and standing up for Lujan, then Nico comes in and asks after Lujan. Luna is nice to him and offers him some food, which is weird because they were being all pissy with each other last episode. Sandra gets a call on the cafeteria phone, and it turns out to be Tatiana, and Luna gets mad again and stomps off. I don’t know where any of this came from.

rebelde36001

“I completely forgot I’m mad at you!”

Mia is emo over her mystery letter, but she refuses to tell Vico and Feli about it. Fernanda rocks up and cheerfully tells them that Manuel and Julieta have been fighting all day because of her. “I’m a genius!” she chirps. Hee. I think I like Fernanda. Fernanda asks how Mia’s end of the bargain is going, and Mia BSes that she’s working on it and runs away. She finds Tomás and Pablo in the hallway, talking about Paula (Tomás is like, “May I remind you what happened last time you guys hid someone in the trailer?”). Mia immediately makes up a story about how the guys in fourth year voted Fernanda best kisser, and she needs one of them to go investigate Fernanda’s technique so Mia can use it. It’s such a lame story, and I love Mia for coming up with it. Mia suggests that Tomás would have the best luck, as Fernanda likes him, but Tomás is like, “Nah man, my love for Lulu is pure.” Heh.

Marcos and Lujan stroll outside, and Marcos apologizes to her for not backing her up in the classroom. See, he HAD to punk out, so that he could stay on the Society’s good side. Okay, that’s fair enough, I’ll admit. Still, I’d let him twist a little, but Lujan forgives him immediately, because she liiiikes him. Marcos says he has to peace out now in case the Society’s watching, but he’ll write to Marizza and tell her how brave Lujan is! He runs off, and the camera pans to some Society guy watching from the trees. And nobody noticed this guy running around in his creepy cloak?

rebelde44501

Can he even see anything from inside that thing?

Guido finds Mia crying, and she shows him the contents of the letter: it’s an article about the car crash her mom died in, saying the guy was the lead singer of Power and the woman he was with was Mama C. Guido offers to help her out, and is pretty genuinely sweet about the whole thing. Guido’s not a dick at all in this episode, it’s deeply confusing. Guido says she should talk to Papa C while he looks up more reports about the crash in the library. It’s a nice suggestion, but I’m not sure he’ll find anything in the like two books the library has.

rebelde51301

Tomás panics to Pablo about Lulu’s request: see, the letter was that love letter Tomás was writing a million episodes ago, but now Tomás is pretending like he didn’t write it, and he has to find someone else to pin it on. “What are you, stupid?” Pablo asks. I mean, how long have they been friends? Pablo should know this about him by now. Anyway, Tomás goes to Lulu and says Mansilla wrote the letter. Oh, this will end well. Also, why did they have Gloria ask Mansilla to give the letter to Lulu? Like…this whole plot could have existed without it.

Paula moves into the sad trailer, and Pablo’s left her some flowers and a letter as a welcome gift. Man, when Marizza finds out how much Pablo’s shaped up, she’s going to be PISSED.

Classroom. Hilda’s like, “We’re gonna do schoolwork now,” and everyone’s like, “NO WAY.” I love their complete aversion to any kind of actual school activities. Vico gets a text for Lujan, which asks Lujan to meet the mystery person outside the school, because they know stuff about her family. Not sketch at all! Lujan denies that it’s for her, but Vico notes that she’s the only Lujan in the school. Luna thinks the message is from Blas, seeing as he’s the only person who knows she’s an orphan. Is he? Lujan only shouted it to the entire school in her first week there. Lujan decides she’s going to go. Feli’s passing by, and she grabs her and tells her to cover for her in class. She gives Feli her drink, and Feli immediately starts drinking it. Heh.

rebelde73401

You know, I do think Feli’s one of the best characters, now that she’s not being weird about Manuel — she’s pretty consistently funny, and her drama with her weight is genuinely affecting.

Manuel intercepts Fernanda in the cafeteria and demands an explanation for her sudden crush on him. Fernanda panics and runs away, and begs Mia to tell her what to do. My God, Fernanda, was it so hard to just say you have a thing for him? Meanwhile, Julieta comes to the cafeteria to see Manuel holding Fernanda’s abandoned lunch tray, and immediately jumps to conclusions. They almost get into another fight, but Nico comes in and tells Manuel that the club is reopening, so they have to start rehearsals again. Julieta’s not pleased about that either. It’s almost like they didn’t resolve any of their issues and should’ve stayed broken up.

Mia calls Peter and demands that he come to the school to see her. “When my dad’s not here, I’M the boss!” she says. Hee! She tries to threaten him into telling her the truth about Mama C, but Peter finally has enough, and he gets pissed at her and leaves. Guido comforts her and says he’ll get permission to leave so he can look in a real library, meanwhile, does Mia have anyone else she can ask? Mia sighs that all of her relatives live in Europe, and the only other person is the LAST person she’d ask. Guido’s like, “Dude, you can’t be picky at this point.”

Nico, Manuel, and Pablo walk and talk in the hallway. Pablo BSes that they can’t practice in the sad trailer because it’s being fumigated. Manuel thinks that’s stupid, but Nico’s terrified of rats and says they’ll find somewhere else. Fernanda comes up to Manuel and starts crying all over him, saying she was hanging around him because she hoped he could help her, because Mia’s being MEAN to her. Hee! Mia so totally has Manuel’s number, because he falls for it.

rebelde81801

Lulu comes storming into the teachers’ lounge to yell at Mansilla about the letter. “Do you know what this is?!” she yells. “An envelope,” he deadpans. Heh. He opens it up and reads the poem inside, and notes that it’s ripped off of a bunch of poets in the school library. He says it must be a student, and Lulu passive-aggressively suggests that it’s a teacher. “Well, it’s not [econ teacher], he thinks car brands are a type of poetry,” Mansilla snarks. Lulu snaps that Mansilla’s playing dumb, and slaps him. God, I ship them so hard. I can’t believe they don’t get together.

Lujan goes outside to meet her mystery texter, and someone throws a bag over her head. It’s the Society! Just kidding, it’s actually Marizza! Hi, Marizza! I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I totally missed you!

rebelde87601

And your crazy facial expressions!

Lujan asks how Italy was, and Marizza says that she went on a hunger strike until Papa Spirito agreed to send her home. Ah, it’s good to know that she didn’t learn or grow as a person at all while she was gone. Marizza wants to know everything that’s gone down at Elite Way since she left (a whole bunch! She missed 10 whole episodes!), and admits that she missed Pablo the most, and wanted to come back and see him. Aw! And uh oh.

Mia and Manuel trade snipes in class (Manuel snarks that Mia’s going to write her report on Armani shoes; Mia snarks that Armani doesn’t make shoes, and sadly they don’t make gags either, or she would buy Manuel one), when Mercedes shows up to talk about Mama C. Mia begs out of class, and they go to the cafeteria to talk. Mercedes says Papa C forbade her to tell Mia anything about Mama C, and is being pretty nice about it. But her voiceover helpfully evils that this is the perfect way to exact her revenge on Mia. Somehow.

rebelde98001

Pablo and Paula make out, but he tells her he has to go rehearse. But they can totally have technically legal but still inappropriate sex when he comes back!

Guido finds Mia crying in the hallway again, and she tells him that Mercedes told her that Mama C was running away with the lead singer when their car crashed. Guido suggests that she talk to Papa C, and Mia shrieks that he lied to her and she never wants to hear his name again. I’m sure Papa C, as ever, will be all shocked that lying to his daughter about important things blew up in his face.

Mansilla barges into Tomás’s room, as the Elite Way teachers are wont to do. He says that he’s considering giving Tomás an A on his exams, and Tomás is like, “Cool, thanks!…wait, why?” Hee. Poor dumb Tomás. Mansilla snarks that Tomás must know a lot about literature after ripping off all those poets for Lulu’s letter. Burn! He tells Tomás to shape up and come clean to Lulu, or Mansilla might actually dole out some punishment.

Lujan and Luna help Marizza move into the sad trailer, where she plans to stay since the school isn’t expecting her back yet. It’s not like Papa Spirito doesn’t know where she is, so there’s no reason for this except to induce drama. But I love drama, so I don’t mind. Predictably, Paula comes in and says she’s a friend of Pablo’s. Marizza assumes that she’s here to kidnap Pablo and jumps her. I say “assumes”, but Marizza was probably just looking for an excuse to beat someone up. She’s only been back for five minutes and she’s already getting violent! Lujan gleefully joins in while Luna stands by and ineffectually tells them to stop. Just like old times! Finally Pablo comes in and breaks them up, and checks on Paula. He calls her “mi amor”, and Marizza flips out: “MI AMOR?”

rebelde109101

They slow-danced under a disco ball! This is a betrayal of epic proportions. (Also, dig Marizza’s watch! I love watches and think they should come back in style, just throwing that out there.)
