Rebelde Way 1×054: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

Previously on Rebelde Way: Manuel and Nico were cool with Marizza joining Facundo’s band, but they still need Pablo’s vote. Sonia lost the fight with Papa Spirito, and nothing’s stopping him from taking Marizza to Italy. Marizza and Lujan planted the idea in Blas’s head that Mia’s into him, making him pervier than ever. Julieta suspected that Mia and Manuel might actually be the main couple of this show, and she’s just a placeholder.

Another cold open: Everyone reacts to Marizza suggesting she’ll run away instead of going with Papa Spirito. Nacho in particular looks shocked, which is weird because you know he’s going to end up enabling her anyway.

Opening monologue: Weird things happen to me when I’m with you. I can’t tell you how I feel, but I get mega jealous when I see you with someone else. Ah, young love.

Sonia and Papa Spirito are still fighting. Papa Spirito’s like, all I wanna do is take her on vacation! She’s my daughter and I love her! Sonia’s like, “I mean, you have to actually be around to love her.” Point to Sonia. She wants him to sign a contract agreeing to bring Marizza back within a month, and meet with her contacts in Italy, and he’s like, “Lol, no.”

As predicated, Nacho throws his weight behind enabling Marizza’s escape efforts. They have absolutely no concrete plan, but everyone starts dancing around chanting that Marizza’s not going to leave. Then Blas rocks into their bedroom without knocking or announcing his presence in any way, as he’s wont to do, and yells at them for making too much noise. He’s suspicious of Nacho’s presence, and Lujan claims responsibility for him. Blas is all snarky like, “Oh, of COURSE two gross, poor, sad orphans know each other.” Lujan seethes.

Mia’s room. Feli’s flipping out over the photo of Manuel and Julieta, and Mia quickly BSes that she took it for Feli, so Feli can stare at it and drill it into her head that she and Manuel are over. It was for the greater good (the greater good!). Feli’s like, “Oh, I thought you took it because you’re way into Manuel.” They look at each other and crack up: Mia and Manuel! Liking each other! Being the main couple of a telenovela! THE VERY IDEA!

“That is just the craziest thing I’ve ever heard!”

Over in the lounge, Julieta is also obsessed with the Mia/Manuel ship. She keeps needling Manuel about whether or not he has a thing for Mia, because he’s always following her around and never shuts up about her. I mean, she has a point. Nevertheless, Manuel’s like, “As the show reminds us every two episodes, I’m poor, therefore her father is paying me to stalk her.” So…stalking, does that mean there’s zero onda? “Negative onda,” Manuel reassures Julieta. Just then, Papa C rolls up. He’s like, “You’re not stalking my daughter, way to slack off.” He tells Manuel that, for some bizarre reason, he thinks the best way to bring Mia around is to make her come to dinner with Mercedes, Papa C, and Manuel. Her hatred of half the guest list will definitely endear Mercedes to her! Manuel’s like, “For sure, boss.”

Sonia, distraught over Papa Spirito, runs into Dunoff’s arms again. He’s like, “Yikes, this is responsibility, let’s not do this.” Sona brings up the idea I had last episode, and asks Dunoff to just tell Papa Spirito that Marizza can’t miss an entire month of school. Dunoff’s like, “But I mean, she totally can, it’s not like she would miss any educating.” Sonia shoves her boobs against him and Dunoff’s like, “Okay, I’ll do it.”

Pablo’s room. Hey, Pablo’s back! Hi, Pablo! I never thought I’d miss you and your douchey ways as much as I did! Tomás and Guido catch him up on everything he’s missed in their lives, which is basically nothing. Guido tells them that Mia called him her “friend” — they’re almost married! Tomás and Pablo are like, “That’s called the friendzone, my man. I learned about it from Reddit.”

rebelde14101

Marizza’s room. Lujan gets another email from her tutor, who tells her to deal with Blas herself: “Your last email was hella aggressive, you could totally take him.” Lujan’s confused, but Luna tells her that Marizza took it upon herself to bawl Lujan’s tutor out last episode. Lujan’s like, “Aw! She really loves me!” Nevertheless, she’s worried: she doesn’t know if she can confront Blas. I guess her usual intimidation tactic of putting her face really close to the other person’s wouldn’t work here.

Sonia and Marizza talk about her potentially going to Europe, and Sonia tells her to be careful and not to get pregnant like Sonia did the last time she went to Europe. Just kidding, but it’s kind implied. Sonia tells Marizza that Dunoff is their last hope, and then Dunoff rocks in and is like, “Yeah, Spirito totally pushed me over and he wants to leave with Marizza in three days.” My God, somehow he made this even worse. Sonia tries to crawl into his arms, but he pushes her away as they’re in the cafeteria and they’ve gotta keep their thing on the DL.

Office. Mia comes in and needles Gloria that Papa C is here, and she should really abandon her post to see him. Gloria snips that she’s busy playing solitaire on Windows XP, back when that game was easy to win. Lucky for Gloria, Papa C comes into the office all on his own, and Mia tries to wingman for her. She basically forces Papa C to invite Gloria to dinner (not the dinner they’re going to have with Mercedes and Manuel, another dinner). Papa C tries to wriggle his way out of it, but he’s no match for the will of a main character. Nevertheless, while they’re on the topic of dinner, he wants Mia to go out with him, Manuel, and Mercedes. Mia’s like, “My God, that’s a literal nightmare.” Papa C’s like, “I mean, you just made me ask Gloria out, so we’re even.” He leaves and Feli comes in, all aflutter that she managed to call Augusto and ask him out. Mia’s like, “Feli, you’re a secondary character, my issues are more important right now.”

Facundo texts Marizza that he wants to hook up (“rehearse”, whatever) with her after school. Marizza’s all ready to reply when Pablo sneaks up behind her and covers her eyes. It’s…pretty cute, actually.

rebelde31601

Pablo wants to have rehearsal today, and Marizza’s like whoa, that’s when I’m hooking up with one of your friends. Obviously she doesn’t actually tell him, but she does say she can’t come. They start arguing over why she can’t go to rehearsal and why he’s a control freak and won’t let her reschedule, blah blah blah. It’s not cute anymore 🙁

Some indeterminable amount of time later, Marizza is emoing by some window, and Sonia comes to find her. They tell each other they don’t want to leave each other, and it’s pretty genuinely emotional. Marizza tells Sonia she has an idea, and it involves inviting Nacho to dinner with Papa Spirito. What’s with everyone and dinner in this episode? Anyway, Sonia agrees. Why is Nacho still with her, anyway? Have they adopted him or something?

Blas is folding laundry and Lujan meets him in the laundry room. Not the laundry room! Blas brings up that Mia denied ownership of the perfume dice, which Marizza and Lujan said was hers. She says they have nothing to do with messing with Mia and Vico, and he dumps the laundry all over the floor in retaliation. Bullying the orphan girl! A+ teachering!

Augusto swings by to mack it with Feli. Vico catches them in the not-library and sarcastically asks if Augusto came here to visit her, or if he’s just here to make out with underage girls. Augusto’s like, “Oh, have you heard from dad lately?”, which is enough to send Vico running. Feli can’t help running her mouth and tells Augusto about Vico’s mysterious presents, and Augusto’s like, “Aw, hell no!” He’s all ready to run off after her, but Feli’s like, “Hold up, I called you here to make out.” He’s like, “Oh, true.”

Cafeteria. Manuel’s sitting with Julieta and being coupley with her when Mia comes in looking for him. She asks if they can talk, and he’s all like, “Kinda busy being a chair for my girlfriend, you feel?” Mia’s all awkward and mumbles that she’ll just talk to him later. Manuel’s like, “Wow, I can’t believe she just walked away. She never does that! There must be something wrong with her! I must find out what it is!” Julieta’s like, “Tell me again how you’re not obsessed with her?” Then Nico comes in, and Manuel wants to run off and talk to him. Julieta reminds him that she’s his girlfriend here, and Manuel promises to meet her in the cupboard under the stairs to make it up to her.

rebelde46601

Vico and Joaquin sneak off to the gym to make out. Whatever happened to the map room? It must be so lonely. I imagine it with like, dust covering the floor and wind whistling around the empty walls. Anyway, Joaquin gives Vico a new cell phone for services rendered, and she thanks him by sticking her tongue down his throat again. An excellent time for Pilar to walk in! Vico quickly covers and tells Pilar that she was sad over her brother being a dick, so Joaquin was comforting her. With his tongue. He’s such a good friend! Pilar’s like, “Omg, you’re right, my boyfriend IS such a good friend.” She swoops in and tells Vico — without any sense of sarcasm — if she ever needs to talk, Pilar will be there for her. Oh man, Pilar, you’re smarter than this.

Everyone meets up for band practice except Marizza. Pablo’s like, “How dare she abandon the band!! THE BAND IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE WORLD!!” Even Manuel and Nico are like yikes, chill. It occurs to me, though, that it’s been established that music is Pablo’s escape from his abusive dad, which is something he can’t get away from at school or really even bring up to his friends. For him, the band probably is the most important thing he’s got, and it kind of makes sense that he’s so intense about it, sad as it is. Anyway. Given that they can’t rehearse without one of the members, they all head back to school. Feli stops Manuel and asks him if he wants to hang out with her, but he says he has plans. Feli is suspicious.

Mia’s sitting sadly at a table in the cafeteria. A couple of tertiary characters try to get some screentime, but she sends them away. Sadly, Guido is a secondary character, and gets to sit at her table. Mia sniffles that she’s SURROUNDED by ENEMIES, and Guido’s like, “Do you want me to kill Manuel? ‘Cause…I totally could.” Oh, Guido, no you couldn’t. She tells him about the Manuel/Mercedes/Papa C dinner, and he says she has to go to prove to them that she doesn’t care what they think. Mia’s like, “Thanks, Guido, you’re such a good friend!”

rebelde63101

Back in the laundry room, Lujan’s irritation has acquired a soundtrack. It’s “Without Me” by Eminem, which made me laugh harder than it should have. Anyway, she dumps a bunch of dirty water all over the laundry clothes, then puts a bunch of dry folded ones on top. Passive-aggressive revenge, my favorite! Blas comes back and needles her about what a good domestic servant she’ll make. Oh, Blas.

Teachers’ lounge. Mansilla comes in to see Hilda marking his papers and he’s like, “So, your suspension is almost up. Have you thought about like, being less racist in the classroom?” He tells her that the students’ feelings are important and she has to stand up for them sometimes. Hilda’s like, “Dude, they just pay me to teach.” Then Dunoff comes in and brandishes a paper at Mansilla. “Can you explain what this is?” he snaps. Mansilla: “Uh, not from over here.” Hee!

rebelde69301

Dunoff says that it’s a petition for Lulu to be put on indefinite leave from the school. For some reason, he thinks Mansilla has something to do with it, instead of all the students who have issues with Lulu’s teaching (or lack thereof).

Luna’s sitting by one of the windows, studying. Nico rolls up and gives her a book of love poems. It’s kind of dorky, but still actually pretty smooth for a high schooler, I won’t lie. He apologizes for standing her up, and she tells him Marizza already explained it to her. He’s like, “Whoa, Marizza actually tried to help instead of fucking shit up? Amazing.” Just kidding. Luna tells him that her mom wants Luna to stay at home forever, and Nico’s like, “That won’t happen! Nothing will keep us part! We’re fifteen years old and our love is real!” Then they make out.

Main hall. Vico pulls out her new phone to stare at it, conveniently just as Augusto walks up. He’s immediately suspicious of where she got the phone, especially in light of Feli spilling the beans. “You’re a disaster!” he tells Vico. I mean, he’s not wrong. Mia runs up and is like, “Vico! You have my phone, I’ve been looking everywhere for it!” Oh, Mia, you’re too good for this school.

Pablo goes to give Facundo the music for “Pretty Boy.” They chit-chat for a bit when Marizza shows up and is all, “Facundo, I’m here for rehearsal and to make out!” Pablo’s like, WHAT. He tells Marizza she can’t be in two bands at once so she’s like, “Fine, I choose Facundo!” Pablo should just tell her that they’ll replace her with Mia, because I bet that would change her mind real quick. But he doesn’t. Facundo just looks confused by this whole thing. Pablo really doesn’t pick his friends for their brains, does he?

rebelde77901

But between Tomás and this guy, he definitely picks them for their hair.

Back at school, Pablo rants to the rest of Erreway about how Marizza’s breaking up the band. Facundo’s band isn’t even that famous! Erreway’s apparently practically the Beatles after only two performances! Manuel is also shocked for some reason that Marizza would be going to two rehearsals. I mean, you were there when she said she wanted to be in two bands, Manuel. Feli’s like, “Why would Marizza ditch our band for another guy’s? Aren’t you two dating?” Pablo’s all, “I don’t want to date a TRAITOR to MUSIC!!!” Manuel’s like, “Whoa, slow down, I’m suddenly very interested in your relationship.” He asks if Pablo’s really upset that Marizza wants to be in another band, or if it’s because she wants to date another guy. Pablo does not like that question at all.

Casa Colucci. Papa C’s preparing to drag himself to dinner with Mia and Gloria, but then Mercedes shows up. She tells him that she canceled a business dinner so she could see him, and Papa C’s like, “Yikes, you really should not have done that.” Theory: Mercedes is all up on Papa C because she’s afraid he’ll meet someone else and dump her like he did with Mama C if she’s not around him 24/7. Which also kind of makes me wonder if Papa C was one of those guys who doesn’t want their girlfriends having their own jobs and lives, especially not a high-powered job like being a lawyer. It makes sense and makes Mercedes more sympathetic, but she’s still a telenovela false love interest who’s just here to cockblock Papa C and Sonia, so who cares. Moving on, without directly telling her that he’s going to dinner with a woman, he tells her that Mia set up a thing for him to do, and he can’t cancel on her. Mercedes is like, “Pfft, of course you can! She’s just like, your daughter, no big!” Papa C’s like, “…I’m not sure you get what having a kid means. I have to, you know, pay attention to her and take care of her.” Mercedes says, “Fine, take care of her, but tonight you’re going out with me.” Papa C’s like, “…did you not hear the part where I have a kid.” Mercedes is like, “YOU’VE CHANGED!” and storms off. I like the visible Windows XP login screen here, by the way.

rebelde98501

Manuel catches up to Mia in the not-library and asks what she wanted to talk about earlier. Mia snips that now she’s the one who’s too busy to talk, so she guesses Manuel will just never know. Woo! Passive-aggression!

Marizza’s room. Luna sees Lujan with all her books, and Lujan complains that Blas made her work all day, so she had no time to study. Uh, that seems illegal? Lujan should tell somebody. I mean, not Dunoff, because lol Dunoff, but I bet Mansilla would be righteously angry about this.

Hallway. Pablo takes out his aggression on a vending machine, and Tomás and Guido have to pull him off. Papa B calls and says he wants to hang out with Pablo and Marizza, and Pablo’s like, “Yikes…no.” Papa B’s like, “NO?” and Pablo’s like, “Gotta go, bye!” Tomás is like, “Didn’t you and Marizza break up?” and Pablo’s like, “Yeah, but my abusive dad can’t know that.” I should add that Mama B looks like she wants to stab herself throughout this whole scene.

rebelde101701

Mia’s room. Feli pouts to Mia that she asked Manuel to hang out but he said no, probably because he has some making out to do with Julieta. This gives Mia an idea, and she runs off to go wreck shit. This idea apparently involves going to see Blas? Don’t do it, Mia! He shows her the teddy bear and the anonymous love notes, and she says she has no idea what those are. He’s like, “So if you didn’t come here to make out, what are you here for?” Mia sighs dramatically and says she’s not sure it’s her story to tell, but she’s just so worried: “You know how I’m best friends with Julieta in fifth year?” Oh, Mia. “I love her, but I’m really upset by how she’s always bringing boys under the stairs to make out with them!” OH, MIA. Blas is like, “Someone’s getting action in this school and it’s not me? THEY MUST BE STOPPED.”

Marizza’s room. She comes back from rehearsal, wearing lipstick that she definitely was not wearing in the first half of the episode.

rebelde105401

Lujan emos to her about Blas, and how she doesn’t think she can stand up to him. “What’s wrong with you? You sound like Luna,” Marizza says. Hee! She reminds Lujan that she has friends backing her up, and they’ve wrecked shit at this school before. Lujan’s like, “That’s true.”

Sonia gets an idea about stopping Papa Spirito, and tells Pepa that she needs Nacho, as they’re going along with Marizza’s madcap plan.

Lounge. Pablo’s playing pool when the padres Bustamante show up. Papa B passive-aggressives that they’ve come to give Marizza a present and say hi, and Pablo, Tomás, and Guido scramble to cover for him: Marizza can’t come to see them! She’s busy! Doing homework! Asleep! DEAD! Not really the last one. Pablo’s like, “Oh, yeah, we’re so busy with finals, she goes to sleep hella early. Right, Luna?” Luna looks up from making out with Nico and is like, “Huh? Oh no, she stays up late and parties hard, have you even met her?” Oh, Luna.

Peter calls Mia to give her the latest gossip at Casa Colucci: he tells her that he overheard Papa C fighting with Mercedes, and he thinks they’re broken up for real now. Mia squeals with delight and falls back on her beanbag chair.

rebelde114101

Meanwhile, Manuel meets up with Julieta in the cupboard under the stairs. As usual, she starts getting her insecurity about Mia all over him, and he’s like, “Let me show you how much I’m not thinking about Mia, by taking your top off.” He gets her sweater off before Blas interrupts them. That’s a boner killer for sure.
