Rebelde Way 1×053: Be Aggressive

Previously on Rebelde Way: Tatiana’s dad totally gave Nico an opening to get out of his relationship with her, but like a chump, Nico didn’t take it. He called Luna’s house to tell her that he’s too weak-willed to break up with Tatiana so he’s going out with her, but the message was intercepted by Luna’s passive-aggressive mom. Some rando named Julieta showed up and became Manuel’s designated love interest, and Mia had the realization, for the fiftieth time, that she might like Manuel. Marizza hooked up with one of Pablo’s friends, and then he was like, “Why don’t you ditch the main characters and join our band?” Somehow, I don’t think that’s going to happen. Meanwhile, Papa Spirito returned from whatever fifty-two episode limbo he’s been stuck in.

Opening monologue: Parents are messed up, but so are teenagers, and everyone’s just muddling along. Fair enough.

We pick up where we left off. Mia’s accidentally revealed her investigation to Papa C, who wants to know how she found out about Mercedes. Mia’s all pissed that Papa C lied to her, while Papa C is pissed that she went behind his back. Mia’s like, “I’m a girl detective! It’s just who I AM, Dad!” and storms off. But when you think about it, this whole thing is actually Manuel’s fault for failing to adequately stalk Mia and tell Papa C what she was up to.

Speaking of whom! Manuel’s at band practice in the sad trailer, rocking the orange pants again. Yikes. He and Nico chit-chat about current events, most particularly Manuel and Julieta. Nico’s like, “So…are you giving up on your revenge to do high school all over again and make out with Julieta for the next year?” and Manuel’s like, “Hey, I can multitask.”

rebelde03301

Feli comes in and tells them Mia wrote a song for the band. Manuel’s like, “Ha! I bet she wrote a song about how she HATES ME and HATES MEXICANS.” Nico and Feli are like, dude, not everything is about you. I mean, the song is about Manuel, but you know, whatever. Marizza comes in and tells them about Facundo’s proposition, and she’s like, “I hella wanna make out with him, so can I be in both bands?” Feli, Manuel, and Nico are all cool with it, but they say Pablo should be in on the decision too. Marizza’s like, “If he wants a vote, he should’ve showed up for the last five episodes.” Then, per their agreement with Pepsi, she pulls out a bottle of soda and Feli gets unnaturally excited about it. Drink Pepsi, guys! Or don’t. They’re paying the show, not me.

Papa C walks out of school to meet with Mercedes, who you will recall insisted on coming along to meet Mia. She’s actually a pretty smart lawyer lady, because she immediately figures out that Sonia told Mia about her. Nevertheless, she reassures Papa C that everything will be fine and she’s totally cool with it.

We switch to Sonia’s dressing room, where we’ve decided to have a dramatic scene even though she’s dressed like a chicken:

rebelde07201

She cries to Pepa that she can’t lose Marizza (for a month? Come on, Sonia). She decides she’ll do whatever it takes to fight for her daughter (who’s going to come back and live with her after her month-long vacation. COME ON, SONIA). “Resistiré!” she sings as she leaves the room. “What’s that fourth wall thing again?” one of the writers asks. In a nice character touch, Pepa prays as Sonia leaves the room. Then a knock comes at the door, and it’s Papa Spirito. Scare chord!

rebelde09401

Bro! It’s been ages!

Mia’s room. She walks around looking at everyone’s stuff, and her girl detective senses start tingling as she passes Vico’s desk. Vico apparently thought it was a good idea to prominently display her new watch on her desk, and Mia grabs it. She’s like, “Something is afoot! Vico is way too poor to afford something like this!” Heh. How very Nancy Drew of her. Vico and Pilar come in and Pilar compliments Vico on the watch while Mia looks at them suspiciously.

Meanwhile, Lujan’s taking her aggression out by literally yelling at her laptop. Oh, Lujan.

rebelde10801

Marizza comes in and they chat a bit, and then Blas knocks on their door. He has the perfume dice that Marizza stole from Mia in hand, and wants to know who they belong to. Now, he could just turn it in to the lost and found or something, but I guess that would deprive him of going into teenage girls’ bedrooms. Marizza and Lujan are all too happy to tell him that it’s Mia’s. Blas is like, aw yis. Marizza and Lujan congratulate themselves on putting Mia in this perv’s path. There’s something wrong with the two of them.

Back in Sonia’s dressing room, Papa Spirito is telling her that he knows he fucked up with regard to not even bothering to raise Marizza, but he wants to set that to rights now. I mean, you’d think it would’ve taken him less than fifteen years to come to that conclusion, but Sonia wails that his month-long vacation will TAKE MARIZZA AWAY FROM HER FOREVER!!! Did Papa Spirito murder someone before the show started or something? Is there a reason Sonia’s so suspicious of him? Also, I gotta add that Camila Bordonaba really looks like the two of them, it’s some good casting.

Blas returns Mia’s perfume dice, or whatever the hell that thing was, and pervs on her some more. SO GROSS.

rebelde15901

GROSS!!!!

The next day, which I’m guessing is Monday because everyone’s back in uniform. Distraught over Papa Spirito, Sonia runs into the arms of Dunoff, because that’s somehow going to help? Make better life decisions, Sonia. Dunoff directs Sonia to his lawyer, and lawyer’s like, “Uh, yeah, legally her father can take her on vacation for a month. It’s not exactly kidnapping.” “How dare!!!” she shrieks, while the ominous music kicks up in the background. It just occurred to me, it is just me, or does the ominous music sound quite a bit like the intro to “Precious Things” by Tori Amos? Anyway, Dunoff’s like, “Welp, we tried.” You know, if Dunoff really wanted to help out, he could point out that missing a month of school — even the nonexistent curriculum of Elite Way — is a huge no-no, but that’d require some logic and usefulness on his part.

Marizza’s room. She, Lujan, and Luna are all hanging out before class. Can I just say how unlikely I think that is? If I lived at school and could walk to class in five minutes, you bet your life I would not be waking up two hours early so I could chat with my friends. But whatever. Lujan tells them about her tutor’s unwillingness to help out with Blas, and Marizza volunteers to write a strongly-worded email, since Lujan’s seemed to have lost her ability to properly rage. Meanwhile, Luna is angsting over Nico. She tells them that he never came back to their sleepover party, and Marizza and Lujan are all ready to break faces. “But it’s fine, really!” she assures them. Oh my God, Luna.

Papa C muses over his problems with Mia and Mercedes and is like, “You know who I should go to with this?” If you guessed Mansilla, you’re right! Does Papa C like…have any friends? Mansilla’s like, “Yeah, I like have to go actually do my job, but you just chill right here until I get back.” Papa C chills accordingly, and overhears Sonia flipping out in Dunoff’s office. He pokes his head in and sees her crying, and he’s like, “Omg, she has FEELINGS.” He hugs her and they get along for about five seconds. Although Papa C still refers to her in “usted” form, I should add.

Nico catches up to Luna in the hall and, mistakenly thinking she got his message and they’re cool, starts chattering on about his dad to her. Luna’s pretty impressively passive-aggressive (by her standards, anyway) is like, “Whatever. I guess I’m glad your dad’s not dead. BYE.”

rebelde48901

Mia and Feli are also in the hallway, rocking some impressively early-2000s hairdos. I’m sorry to say that I still think they look pretty cute. Anyway, Feli confesses that she still thinks about Manuel when Augusto’s tongue is down her throat. Yikes! She’s about to say something to that effect, when she sees Pilar walking down the hall with Joaquin’s arm around her. A chord goes off in the background like Mia has some revelation, but I’m not sure what it is. I think it’s meant to imply that Joaquin’s wearing a watch similar to Vico’s, although my screencaps don’t stand up to that. But it makes more sense than any other option, which is the method I’ve come to use when figuring out the plot of this show in general.

rebelde49901

Feli looks quite cute with a little lift in her hair, although not so cute that she should invest in Bumpits. There’s never a reason good enough to justify that.

Mia heads into the main hall and runs into Blas who’s like, “What up, I know you want this.” Mia’s understandably confused, and when he brings up the teddy bear, she tells him that was an old toy she gave to Vico (or something). Vico walks by, and Blas is like, “Ew, she’s already fifteen, way too old for me.” Just kidding, but it doesn’t sound out of character, does it?

Mansilla walks in on Papa C and Sonia’s cry-and-hug session. He’s like, “Oh cool, you guys talked it out? Because I was just about to ban her from talking to Mia ever again, per your request.” Nice job, Mansilla. Sonia’s immediately offended and renews her vow to hate Papa C forever and ever. She storms out of the room and Mansilla’s like, “Whoops.”

rebelde57201rebelde57301

Nico comes in to the cafeteria to ask Sandra if she’s seen Luna. Sandra’s like, “Oh, she went off with some really hot tall blonde guy. His eyebrows were in way better shape than yours.” Nico takes this at face value for some reason and sadly slinks off. Luna pops up from behind the counter and thanks Sandra for covering for her. As usual, I wonder why Sandra keeps enabling Luna if she wants her to learn to be confrontational. Plus, Sandra is on Nico’s side about this whole thing anyway. But whatever.

Papa C goes to find Mia in the not-library and asks what her deal is with Mercedes. He’s like, “I for one am shocked you didn’t immediately warm to my secret girlfriend!” He tells Mia he wants her to get along with Mercedes, and Mia passive-aggressively tells him to leave and hang out with Mercedes if he likes her so much. Papa C expresses disappointment with her, and once again Mia’s all like, “Well this is who I AM, Dad! You just don’t KNOW me!” ~Rebelde~

Nico and Manuel run into Marizza in the main hall, and she starts to tear Nico a new one for standing Luna up. He’s like no way, I totally called her house and spoke to her completely trustworthy mom! Manuel and Marizza are like, that sounds bizarro but totally believable for a telenovela! Marizza’s all like, “But WHY?” and they’re about to puzzle out the mystery when Manuel sees Julieta and is like, “Sucking face with my girlfriend is way more interesting than this, I’ll deal with your problems later.”

Classroom. Mia’s snapping photos of Vico, Joaquin, and Pilar together, I guess as evidence for her case. Bless. Julieta and Manuel come in, and Mia takes a photo of them kissing. That’s a little creepy. Feli notes that Mia’s been acting upset, and Mia says she’s just pissed about Vico. She tells Feli that she thinks Joaquin’s cheating on Pilar with Vico, and Feli’s like, “No way, Pilar’s got him on a leash.” Mia’s like, “Lmao, as if Pilar could get anyone on a leash.” Way harsh! Nevertheless, Feli thinks something else is on Mia’s mind. Could it be Julieta and Manuel? It totally could.

Nacho’s in this episode again, for some reason. He calls Marizza and tells her that he may or may not have some information, but he’s going to withhold it because Marizza likes Flor better than him. Don’t feel sad, Nacho! I still hate you both equally! Marizza grovels to an eight-year-old, and he tells her that Sonia’s been talking to a bunch of “doctors.” Marizza immediately flips out that Sonia could be sick. Sandra’s like, “Well ya know, we speak Spanish, and he said ‘doctor’, not ‘medico.’” Maybe Sonia’s been speaking to lawyers instead? Back on Nacho’s end of the line, he overhears Sonia pick up a call from a lawyer named “Aguirre.” (No relation to Manuel, as far as I can tell.) Unrelated Aguirre tells Sonia that he might know a way for her to get around Papa Spirito, and she’s overjoyed. But who gave him her number? On the other other end of the line, Papa C motions to Unrelated Aguirre and tells him to tell Sonia that he was referred by Dunoff. Yikes! Papa C knows not what he does.

Mia’s room. She’s somehow already found the time to make a print of the Manuel/Julieta photo, and is emoing over it. Vico comes in and Mia confronts her about fucking around behind Pilar’s back. Vico denies it, but right at that moment another gift gets dropped off at their door. It’s a red leather jacket, which is actually pretty cute? I don’t know what this show is doing to me. Vico lectures Mia on how soon she’ll grow up and learn about the glories of being side piece. This is genuinely upsetting, because I have known girls like this irl. Anyway, Mia’s like, “This is pretty sad,” and Vico slaps her. Feli comes in and Mia flounces off with her, but not before getting in one last dig: “And everyone knows your dad doesn’t love you!” Way harsh!

Marizza’s room. All the girls are too emo over their respective troubles to focus on their homework. Eventually Marizza relents and decides not to be a dick, and tells Luna that her mom never gave her Nico’s message. Luna’s immediately all twitterpated. Then Nacho comes in through the window, which I guess we’re supposed to think is charming. He tells her that he figured out the rest of the Sonia/Papa Spirito drama, because “[he’s] a capo.” If you say so, Nacho. He tells Marizza that Papa Spirito wants to take her on vacation, and Marizza’s like, “Ohohoho, my dad not being neglectful? Surely you jest!”

And now for a completely random scene with Nico and Tomás! I guess they realized they hadn’t wrung the use out of all the main characters yet. Speaking of which, I know Pablo is MIA, but has Guido been in this episode? I feel like the episodes are better at consistently working the girls in than the boys, but anyway. Tomás thanks Nico for throwing himself on the pyre for him, and gives him a green folder that has something in it that will help the Provenzas out. He says, “I’ll never forget what you did for me.” They’re so in love, you guys.

rebelde112401

It’s a cute scene, but it has nothing to do with the rest of the episode. Moving on! Marizza runs to the office to try and get a hold of Sonia, but Gloria’s like, “Were you not paying attention to the Nico thing? I don’t care if your mom’s dying, I’ll never let you out of school!” Luckily for Marizza, Sonia and Papa Spirito (and Dunoff) are standing right behind her. Marizza flips out that she’s not Papa Spirito’s daughter and she’ll never go anywhere with him, and runs off and locks herself in the teachers’ lounge. Dunoff’s like, “Do I defend my lady love or suck up to a rich guy? CHOICES.” Nacho’s like, “Dang, family drama is crazy. I’m so glad I’m an orphan!”

Manuel shows Julieta the lyrics for “Pretty Boy”, and she gathers a bunch of her friends around and starts singing it to them, because even the tertiary characters have to show off in this show. Mia comes in and flips out at Julieta singing her song, and Julieta’s all, “Um, this isn’t YOUR song, my BOYFRIEND wrote it. And he’s right: he is my pretty boy!” That last part is a direct quote (and in English), by the way. That’s embarrassing, although I guess not more so than English speakers calling people “caliente.”

Teachers’ lounge. Mansilla finds Marizza, although he has to come in through the window. Hee!

rebelde120601

He figures out her problem in about two sentences, as usual. Marizza’s like, “I wish Pablo were here so someone else could understand my parental issues.” Just kidding, but it’s implied. Mansilla tells Marizza to talk it out with Sonia. She lets Sonia in and Sonia tells her that she tried everything, but she has to let Marizza go with Papa Spirito. I guess Papa C’s lawyer couldn’t find a solution in the five minutes between his scene and the rest of the show? Anyway, Sonia tells Marizza that she knows people in Italy who’ll keep an eye on Marizza for her. That’s a little weird. Marizza shuffles out and tells Papa Spirito that she’ll go with him, but only for a month, and also she hates him forever. Papa Spirito is sad. I guess. He can’t really change his facial expressions very well.

Manuel catches up to Mia and calms her down re: the song. Not before she gets all up in his face, though, as is usual for these two.

rebelde122401

He tells her that he didn’t steal her song, he just told Julieta he was writing the music and she made an assumption. Mia’s like, “…oh. Awkward.” They make up and she leaves. Julieta rocks up and is like, “Dude, your faces were way too close together. Plus you couldn’t shut up about her that time we were making out, is something going on here?” Manuel’s like, “No way, making out with you is A+,” and Julieta is appeased.

Meanwhile, Mia heads back to her room and finds Feli there, photo of Manuel and Julieta in hand. She’s like all offended Mia took a photo of them? I don’t know.

Marizza’s room. She tells Lujan, Luna, and Nacho that she agreed to go to Italy, and Lujan’s like, “Parents just don’t understand, man.” They’re all sad and Luna gently suggests it might work out for the best, and Marizza’s like, “Ha! You guys don’t think I’m actually going to GO, do you? Does this show look like it has the budget for Italian scenery?” ~*~Rebelde~*~
