Rebelde Way 2×110: How Long Have You Been Seventeen?

Previously on Rebelde Way: Bad things are happening to Manuel, and I am living for it. Prophetic Side Bangs’s family is coming after him for driving recklessly and endangering her life, so Manuel better lawyer up or he’s going to jail. This is framed like anyone would really miss him.

The next day, I guess. All the boys in Pablo’s room are going on about how unfair it is to Manuel that he’s being charged with attempted murder. “It was an accident!” Guido bleats. I mean…that’s what manslaughter is for, Guido. (In fairness, my guess from googling is that Manuel is indeed being charged with “attempted murder”, which is more serious than manslaughter, but everyone’s going on like ALL HE DID WAS CRASH A CAR, WHY IS THE LAW SO MEAN.) Rocco goes off to breakfast, as he doesn’t give enough of a shit about Pablo and his friends to hang around. After he leaves, Guido says that he has to tell Pablo and Tomás something.

Over in Manuel’s room, Manuel is being all emo and Francisco has to comfort him, as usual. Why doesn’t Manuel just date Francisco? All he does is stroke Manuel’s ego and tell him what he wants to hear, just like Manuel wants girls to do. Francisco asks why Manuel was driving like such a maniac, and Manuel bleats that he was just super mad. Is that why he also assaulted Mia? Is anyone ever going to bring that up again? (Rhetorical question; I know the answer.) “Well, look on the bright side,” Francisco’s dumb ass chirps. “Papa C still likes you!” Manuel’s like, “Not very comforting in the face of jail, but okay.”

I guess Guido has told Tomás and Pablo about the Andrea situation, because Tomás is losing his mind. He’s all, “How very dare you make Pilar mad at me!” Yeah! Fuck Guido for ruining my OTP! Tomás wants to tell Pilar the truth, but then it’ll come out that Guido is cheating on Augustina, and then Not Nicolas Cage will kill him. Again, this is framed like we’re supposed to think it’s a bad thing. Pablo promises that he and Guido will think of way to help Tomás out with Pilar. Tomás is reassured by this, because only he could think that any plan that Guido is a part of will end well. Poor dumb Tomás.

Mia tries to drag Feli out of bed. Feli doesn’t want to go out into the world and face Francisco, and she starts ranting at Mia that Francisco clearly likes her and the Amarte duele poster clearly belongs to her and why doesn’t Mia just ACCEPT that Francisco is in love with her and wants to run away to the countryside with her. Mia’s like, “Now you’re just being weird.” Feli snipes that if Mia is really her friend, she’ll ask Francisco flat-out if he likes her. Mia reluctantly agrees.

Sabrina is somehow at Elite Way, because I guess she lives there now or something. Does Sabrina like…not have a job? Or school? Does she just hang around stalking Manuel? I have questions. Anyway, Manuel tells her that he’s being charged with attempted murder, but it’s fine, since Papa C is taking care of things. Sabrina rants that she’s sick of hearing about how mixed up Manuel is with the Coluccis. Manuel’s like, “I mean, I did come here to kill him and now am leeching off him for an indefinite amount of time.” Sabrina is pissed that she had to ask Mia how Manuel was doing instead of hearing it from him. Manuel panics that Mia might have told Sabrina that Manuel’s cheating on her with Side Bangs. Sabrina says that Mia only told her that Manuel got in a car crash — but she wants to know who the car belonged to, and who Manuel was with. Manuel confesses that he was with another girl. Didn’t…Sabrina know this?

Marizza gushes to Lujan about how Javier stood up to Pablo for her and said all these complimentary things and stroked her ego until she forgot about what a lying weirdo he is. Javier is so upfront! He’s everything she’s ever wanted in a man! I mean, Marizza does like older men, and Javier is clearly secretly 40 years old, so it tracks. Lujan’s like, “…yikes,” as Avril Lavigne starts playing in the background.  This shit IS complicated, I can’t disagree. Marizza picks up on her weird response and asks why Lujan doesn’t like Javier.

We don’t get to see what Lujan says, though, because we instead cut over to the boys. They’re going into class, and Francisco and Marcos want to know how Sabrina reacted when she found out that Manuel was out driving without other girls. Manuel’s like, “She didn’t do anything, because she doesn’t love herself,” and all the boys are like, “Cool, whatever.” Mia and Feli come in, and Mia asks to speak to Francisco alone. Manuel’s like “For sure!” and nearly jumps out of his chair, and Mia’s like, “I wasn’t talking to you.” Hee. She leads Francisco off and Manuel sulks.

Marizza thanks Javier for backing her up with Pablo — otherwise they would’ve never found out what happened to Manuel! WHAT. He showed up to school like five minutes after you stormed Dunoff’s office; all you had to do was chill out. They stroke each other’s egos for a bit, but then Javier gets a text message from Lujan telling him that she’s onto him and he better come clean soon. Marizza wants to know what’s up; Javier lies (as ever) and says his mom was texting him telling him to put a jacket on. Marizza’s like, “Your mom’s kind of clingy” and Javier points out that she did raise Javier on her own, after all. Man, that’s even more of a thankless job than raising Marizza solo. Marizza and Javier bond some more over their absentee dads, but then Javier runs off rather than tell Marizza the truth.

Mia takes Francisco down into the basement to ask him if he likes her. Not a weird setting at all! Francisco bleats that he’s totally just stalking her and giving her gifts platonically. It’s what friends do! Turning around and reporting your every move to your creepy ex-boyfriend is also what friends do! Mia’s like, “Oh, we cool then.” Francisco adds that he could never look at Mia like that, since Manuel is so crazy in love with her. Mia refuses to believe it, which is fair, since nothing Manuel has done since the beginning of this season indicates that he feels any kind of affection or respect for her.

Pablo and Guido catch up to Pilar and try to BS Tomás out of trouble, except they make it sound like Andrea was there to see him because she’s an ex of his and is obsessed with him but that was AAAGES ago and everything’s fine and Tomás was just calling her to tell her to stop stalking him and she showed up at school because she’s just so damn crazy. “Hey, she’s a great girl!” Guido interjects. “Well, is she a stalker or is she a nice girl?” Michi butts in. Hee. Pablo’s like, “Uh…Guido will clarify!” and Guido’s like, “Okay, so the thing is…Tomás has an STD. Like not anymore! And it was a long time ago! But Andrea was here because she felt guilty!” and Pilar’s like, “…why?” and Guido blurts out that everything’s fine but the upshot of it all is that Tomás lost a testicle. OH MY GOD, GUIDO.

After that bit, Martavio calls a class meeting because I guess he doesn’t actually teach class anymore. Tomás chirps that Pilar is missing and he’ll go look for her, but then Pilar walks in and side-eyes him as she goes to her desk. Poor dumb Tomás doesn’t know what’s going on. On the opposite side of the relationship spectrum, Rocco and Vico enter together, chatting happily about a new song that Rocco’s working on. Aw. They’re sweet and all, but…wasn’t Rocco mad at her? For being homophobic? I don’t even remember. Anyway, everyone gets seated and Martavio proceeds to totally tell the entire class Manuel’s business. He’s all like, “So let’s talk about how one of your classmates is being charged with attempted murder!” What? I hate Manuel, but surely this is not a thing a teacher should be discussing with the entire class. Martavio thinks that Manuel owes the entire class an explanation for his behavior because they were all worried about him and he was out being a fuckboy. I mean…okay, but he didn’t have to go spilling Manuel’s legal troubles to God and everybody like that. Martavio remains totally ignorant of all things related to teaching, as usual.

Lujan and Javier are not at this meeting, because they’re out in some yard that this school has never had before. Lujan demands an explanation for Javier’s behavior and he’s like, “I’m weirdly obsessed with Marizza, what can I say?” He BSes that lying is all he knows how to do because of his sad childhood when his dad lied to his mom all the time. “I don’t feel bad for you,” Lujan says, because she is the best. Still, she believes that Javier’s only doing all this because he’s so damn thirsty — and honestly, Lujan Cyrano’d her way into dating Marcos the first time around, so she kind of doesn’t have a leg to stand on — and says that she’ll keep her mouth shut and let Javier tell Marizza the truth himself. I bet he won’t.

Apparently Martavio’s whole speech about Manuel was just a segue into a driving lesson, because now he’s asking the kids how much they actually know about driving a car. Martavio, you could’ve given them driver’s ed without telling them about their classmate’s rap sheet. He starts telling them to respect the rules of the road and Marizza snipes that some people don’t respect the rules at all, like Pablo’s dad. Pablo’s like, “Wow, uncalled for,” and then Martavio’s like, “Well, YOU have to respect the rules anyway! The Man WANTS you to drive drunk so you’ll get in trouble!” and then Manuel gets huffy even though he wasn’t drunk as far as I know, and he tries to walk out. Martavio snaps at him to sit back down, and Manuel does. You don’t have to be here, Manuel! You already have a high school diploma! I hate to defend Manuel but like…this lecture is dumb and going nowhere, as far as I can tell. Does Martavio even make lesson plans or does he just waltz into the classroom and start talking out of his ass?

Papa C goes to see Sonia and tells her that he’s sorted everything with Manuel’s charges, so that plot only lasted about half an episode.

In the cafeteria, Pilar is still cagey with Tomás, and he’s like, “IDK why she’s being so weird.” Pablo and Guido are like, “Wow, beats us too.” Michi swoops in to sit Tomás down and tell him that Being You Is Most Definitely Cool and it’s totally fine to have one testicle. Tomás is like, “O…kay?”

Over in the courtyard, Rocco is playing his guitar like any good mid-2000s emo boy worth his salt. Some Guy watches him suspiciously, and then Diego rolls up to LOUDLY ASK if he WOULD LIKE SOME BUBBALOO, THE GREATEST GUM OF ALL TIME oh and by the way Some Guy wants to know who that emo kid over there is so he can beat him up for being gay. Not in so many words, but close enough. Some Guy walks over to report Rocco’s name to Some Other Guy, and they seethe that they have to purge Elite Way of bad elements. They’re just recycling the Society plot from last season, huh?

Mia sits Feli down and excitedly tells her that Francisco would never date either of them! Isn’t that great news! “Oh, yeah, very comforting,” Feli says dryly. Heh. Then Michi shows up and tells Feli that her mom is there to see her. “What happened?!” Feli shrieks. “Why does something have to be happening? Maybe she’s just here to take you shopping,” Michi says. Oh, Michi, you know you’re on a telenovela, right? Feli goes off the office, leaving Mia alone. Manuel takes the opportunity to rock up and thank Mia for not revealing his indiscretion to Sabrina. Doesn’t she already know about it anyway though??? I don’t understand. Anyway, Mia snipes that Manuel’s fuckboying is none of her business, but he’s seriously acting like a douche and she doesn’t think she knows him anymore.

Over in the cafeteria, Augustina is trying to get her boyfriend to hang out with her while Guido blows her off and complains about how annoying she is but never actually breaks up with her because he is a cowardly custard. And then I guess Tomás has somehow found out that this whole one-testicle debacle is Guido’s fault, because he comes in and like…grabs him by the balls? It’s weird. Just punch him, Tomás!

Feli’s mom comes to see her about taking her to a family party, and immediately starts needling her about wearing black to make her look skinnier. She goes on about how nice it is that Feli’s sister is engaged, and Feli should be next down the aisle but she probably won’t be because boys don’t like fat girls. Feli just stands there taking hits on her self-esteem while Michi side-eyes them in the background.

The kids come in for class. Lujan asks Marizza if she’s spoken with Javier, and if he’s said anything, you know, about how he doesn’t actually have a hole in his head and he’s a lying liar who’s trying to get into her parents. Marizza’s like, “Never came up, why?” Sigh. Then Papa C waltzes in and continues to spill Manuel’s business to the entire class. I hate that everyone’s lack of decorum is making me defend Manuel, of all people. Anyway, Side Bangs’s family dropped the charges, but Manuel isn’t allowed to drive for 2 years. Everyone cheers, as they always do every time their classmates manage to avoid consequences for their actions.

In Papa B’s office, he’s having a meltdown over how PABLO LIED TO HIM!!! and HE WON’T LET HIS SON BE A TRAITOR TO THEIR POLITICAL DYNASTY!!! So Papa B is a Kennedy? That’s where we’re going with this? He says that he doesn’t want Pablo to be a loser like Javier, which offends Ines. Whatever. I hate Papa B but he’s not wrong about Javier.

Papa C takes Manuel into his room to lecture him about his bad driving behavior. Manuel’s like, “Whatever, man! You’re not even my real dad, man!” Papa C says that be that as it may, he’s responsible for Manuel “until [he turns] eighteen.” Wait, what? Wasn’t Manuel seventeen when he first showed up at Elite Way? Hasn’t it been a full year since then? HOW LONG HAS MANUEL BEEN SEVENTEEN?

The bad hair, the condescension, the stalking…IT ALL MAKES SENSE.

Manuel tries to protest, but Papa C’s like, “I’m going to take care of you whether you like it or not!” Neither of them bring up the third option, which is that since Manuel has already finished high school, and he’s been over that revenge thing for a while now, and he can’t even drive in Argentina anymore, he should just GO HOME.

Pablo tries to mediate between Tomás and Guido. Guido’s all like, “I told Pilar that you only had one testicle for the greater good!” Pablo’s like, “No one actually cares about your fighting, so why don’t you two just make up and wrap this plot up real quick.” They hug it out and Guido says that he’ll help fix things with Pilar. Tomás backs up and is like, “I beg you to stop helping me.” HEE. Guido sighs that girls are always coming between them. I think your dick is the problem here, Guido, but whatever. Then Sabrina rocks up and pulls Pablo to the side all like, “I hope you don’t mind if I come between you two for a minute!” Ha ha, do you see what they did there? She asks after Manuel, but adds that she’s here for all of Erreway, as there’s new developments with the band. She wants to call a meeting.

Ines comes to see Javier. She frets to him that Papa B is freaking her out and wonders if she should break up with him. Why she thinks her supposedly teenage son can help her out with that, I don’t know. Javier’s like, “IDK, do what you want, man. Break up with him. Or don’t. IDK.” He tells her that he would rather have been raised by her than his dad, and it’s kind of cute, for Javier. He and Ines hug, and Marizza sees them. She gets all emo over her own parental situation. Javier leaves, and Ines gets a call from his dad.

Manuel sees Sabrina in the lounge and comes over to talk to her. “Did you come to see me?” he asks. “No, I came to see the band,” she snipes. Hee. Sabrina is awful but I live for anyone being mean to Manuel. She’s all pissy that Papa C is helping Manuel out, and accuses him of using Papa C’s involvement to keep chasing Mia. She’s like, “I actually did come to argue about this!” but then the rest of the band walks in and she shuts up. She pulls out a folder and says that this folder could change their lives forever.

Rocco is getting ready to leave with his guitar when Vico runs up to him. One of the homophobic guys spies on them as they talk — Vico wants to go with Rocco, as Rocco’s going to see Dani and play him a new song, which Vico wants to hear. Rocco’s suddenly mad at her again, and he’s all dry and sarcastic with her about how she would have to hang out with a GAY PERSON and oh, what would people say if they saw her with GAYS?! The horror! He walks out, and Some Homophobic Guy takes that as proof that Rocco is gay and Vico is like…a gay collaborator, I don’t know.

Erreway is freaking out because Sabrina’s folder is full of expenses from their tour. They panic that they’ll have to raise ticket prices or something to cover the costs, but then Sabrina’s like, “JK, it’s all paid for by our corporate sponsors!” Manuel snaps his fingers to make them give the folder to him, because he’s a jerk, and gasps that these are some huge brands. Pablo thanks Sabrina for wrangling a bunch of famous brands — like Bubbaloo, presumably — into promoting them. Manuel walks over and kisses her — I think he’s going for the mouth, but she’s not expecting it, so it kind of lands in her general face area — and also thanks her. Mia watches uncomfortably.

In the cafeteria, Tomás offers Pilar some Bubbaloo as an olive branch. Hee. Poor dumb Tomás. He sits down and tells her the truth: Andrea is some girl that Guido’s cheating with, and he has to hide her so Augustina’s dad won’t kill him. Pilar believes him, but frets that she doesn’t know how to break it to Augustina. Tomás is like, “No way, we can’t tell her the truth! We have to let Guido string her along for the greater good!” Pilar’s like, “I care more about Augustina than about Guido’s stupid dick, so.” Tomás bleats that nothing happened with Guido and Andrea — it was just a kiss! She definitely didn’t cosplay as a nurse for him! Pilar reluctantly agrees not to tell Augustina. Dammit, Tomás! Pilar is still emo, and tells Tomás that she doesn’t like how his friends are always trying to break them up. Just then, Pablo and Guido come in and say that they have to talk to Tomás in private to share some good news about the band. Tomás isn’t even Erreway, Pablo! No one cares! Pablo says that Tomás has to choose between them and Pilar, right now. Oh, man. Don’t put that kind of pressure on him, Pablo.

Some Homophobic Guy takes pictures of Dani and Rocco meeting up — they hug and Dani covers Rocco’s eyes when they meet, which deeply offends Some Homophobic Guy’s sensibilities.

Lujan confronts Javier over not telling Marizza the truth. Javier’s like, “I’ll do it! Eventually!” Marizza runs up and chirps that she has important news about the band, and Lujan’s like, “Actually, Javier here has some important news for you. See ya, guys.” Javier sweatdrops. Heh. Destroy him, Lujan! Javier hems and haws for like five minutes, and just when it looks like he might finally spit it out, Ines rocks up. Dammit, Ines! She tells him that she has bad news.

I guess Tomás has chosen Pilar, because Pablo and Guido return to Pablo’s room without him. They rant about how they should NEVER leave each other for a girl; bros before h*es and all that. Then Andrea shows up and Guido’s like, “Bye Pablo.”

Some Homophobic Guy stops Rocco on the street and tells him that he has a message from Vico. Rocco’s stranger danger goes off and he’s like, “Well, great, I’ll ask her when I get back to school, bye.” Some Homophobic Guy gets all threateny that Vico’s not at school anymore, if he gets his drift. He directs Rocco to some creepy abandoned building. Vico isn’t there, but the two homophobic guys are. They have baseball bats and start threateningly smacking them into their palms, except they’re not doing it at all in sync. They’d never make it in West Side Story!

I’m laughin like crazy while reading your blogs but maybe you should chill a little bit about Manuel? He did some scumbag stuff but you’re portraying him like he commited crimes against humanity(Hitler-style).

This show clearly is trying to get him out of character after break up with Mia and commit all those mistakes, which ultimately will lead to his redemption, point is I guess creators try to convey message that true love doesn’t just end with break-up and soulmates can always find their way back to each other – which is kinda silly in adults perspective but could be a good lesson for teenagers(main demographic) to not act so foolishly like Manuel when your girlfriend dumps you, especially when fault was yours

and everyone can hate Manuel(he deserves all of it) but if you take a closer look his and Lujan’s storylines are actually most interesting out of them all, take their plots out of equation and what’s left? Pablo’s daddy issues? Mia’s clothing choice dillemas? Marizzas “rebelliousness” for absolutely no fuckin reason? Guido who’s brain works on only signal of his dick? Marcus who’s only role is to be Lujans and Manuel’s sidekick? Poor dumb Tomas? Feli’s binge eating? – all of this subplots are quite lame even for teenagers standarts, while Manuel’s “villain” transformation is quite entertaining to watch, Felipe Colombo was best actor in this show and he did quite good job for us to despise his character
