ALRIGHT EVERYBODY, welcome to episode 100! Quite a bit happens in this episode, plotlines actually get resolved, there’s actual parental involvement(!), and Mansilla finally gets a love interest. I’m still a little disappointed he didn’t hook up with Lulu. Or maybe not. I still can’t tell how old she was supposed to be.
Opening monologue: ~The Man~ is super powerful, and so we can’t forget that we have power too and stand up to authority.
When we last left off, Dunoff was trying to expel Guido, but was interrupted by the sounds of a protest (led by Marizza, naturally). Now he’s storming on out yelling for Blas (like Blas has ever helped fix anything). He passes a girl who is trying really hard to copy Marizza’s hair, but is not quite getting there.
Blas comes running and Dunoff’s like, “Where were you?!” Blas doesn’t say anything, probably because the answer is “off sniffing Mia’s underwear” or something equally gross. Anyway, Marizza and the rest of the protestors demand that Dunoff expel the Society, and Dunoff’s like, “Well, they nearly killed a kid, but let’s not be hasty!” He tells Blas to punish them all for protesting, and Blas is like, “This is nearly as fun as making out with underage girls!”
That said, Blas’s favorite target is not at the protest, but getting yelled at by Papa C, who’s all dickmatized by Mercedes. He’s all disappointed that Mia’s performing the devil’s music, and he rips up the photo and tells her she won’t be in the band anymore. Like that’s going to stop her? I mean, just a suggestion, but if Papa C really wanted to keep an eye on her and her doings, he might like…not send her to a boarding school where she’s out of his supervision all day every day. Just a thought. As he leaves, he sees Blas disciplining all the protesting students and he’s like, “Good! ~Rebeldía~ must be punished!”
Lujan’s also missing the protest, as she’s keeping vigil at Marcos’s bedside again. They bond over Lujan staying at the hospital instead of going to the protests, and he tells her that he stole the other wallets so she wouldn’t be expelled. Lujan’s all twitterpated, then she gets less twitterpated when Marcos is like, “So my dad thinks we’re dating, what a wacky concept! It’s impossible! Craziness! Would never happen! How could he think such a thing! Impossible! Ahahaha!” Man, you don’t gotta twist that knife so much, Marcos.
Mansilla comes back to school and is like, “The fuck is going on here?” He lifts the punishment and goes off to yell at Dunoff. Blas is all disappointed his power trip was ruined. In the office, Dunoff is still trying to pressure Guido into the signing the confession, when Mansilla sweeps in to save the day. They should really give him a cape or something. Mansilla reams Dunoff out for this total lack of habeas corpus, and Dunoff’s like, “Hey, this is all Etchamendi, I take no responsibility whatsoever, as usual.” Meanwhile, Etchamendi turns the proof over to Rodrigo and tells him to destroy it. Marizza witnesses this and is all suspicious. She goes looking in Manuel’s room for the papers, but they’re all gone. Rodrigo comes in and starts crazying about how they’ll never be able to put the Society away. Then he drags her off to parts unknown, and by that I mean “probably the basement again.” I bet everyone will run around looking for her for half the episode too instead of checking there.
Never trust a short bald man, unless he’s Danny DeVito.
The Clue Crew sans Marizza gives Mansilla the lowdown on what’s happened so far, and tell him that Guido is officially a good guy now. Then Luna comes in and tells them that Marizza saw Etchamendi giving the files to Rodrigo. I gotta commend Marizza for actually telling another person what she knows. And now she can’t find Marizza anywhere! “Where could she be?” Nico derps. I TOLD YOU. They all run off looking for her — Manuel actually bumps into the girl with the same haircut and initially mistakes her for Marizza — while Rodrigo drags her across campus. Oh. Maybe they’re not going to the basement after all. He yanks off her glasses and crushes them, like, way to make it easier for them to find her! Manuel asks Julieta where Rodrigo’s room is, because…Rodrigo doesn’t live in a dorm like everyone else? The fifth year dorms are in some secret hiding place? I don’t know.
Tomás, God love him, just goes from table to table in the cafeteria asking if anyone’s seen Marizza. Poor dumb Tomás.
Meanwhile, Blas has decided to sic Renata on Mansilla, and she comes storming in to tell him that the third year should be serving their punishment, not hanging out in the cafeteria. Or — just a thought — instead of either of those things, they could be learning. Haha, just kidding, that would never happen. Renata sends them to the classroom, which of course endears her to everyone immensely. She tells them that their punishment is to practice for the Math Olympics (way to make them enthused about it), and then Mansilla swoops in and is like, “LEARNING in school? Not on my watch!”
Meanwhile, Mia’s been running around trying to tell Manuel something important, and he’s like, “My plot is way more important than whatever you have to tell me!” I bet it’s not, and it’s going to bite him later. Anyway, he tells Mia that they lost the evidence about the Society, and Mia somehow…thinks there must be more evidence? She starts pawing through all of Manuel’s stuff, like Rodrigo didn’t tell Marizza that he had it. I don’t know.
Rodrigo’s tied Marizza to some wall behind the school, where I guess no one ever goes ever, while he sets the evidence on fire, cackling all the while. He’s so (suddenly and inexplicably) crazy!
Back in the hospital, while Lujan has gone, and Marcos suddenly remembers that Lujan confessed her undying love for him while he was unconscious. Then Lujan comes back — I guess she went out to get some flowers, because she’s holding a bunch, and she certainly didn’t go back to school. I love how the one time they could’ve used Lujan’s fists of fury, she’s off in her own subplot. He asks her if she kissed him and told him she loved him, and Lujan’s all, “I LOVE NOTHING!” and runs away.
Pablo’s outside looking for Marizza, and Blas busts him and tries to get him to go to the classroom with everyone else. Pablo’s like, “No! She’s my ex-fake girlfriend and my best chance of ever getting laid again!” and runs. Blas gives chase, except he goes like two feet and he’s like, “I lost him!” Pablo comes across Marizza’s glasses, and then he finds Rodrigo and Marizza like two seconds later. That was easy. Rodrigo probably should’ve taken her to the basement, since it’s not out in the open and nobody bothered to look there anyway. Rodrigo tells Pablo that he has a gun, which Marizza corroborates and tells him to get away. Does Pablo get away? Of course not. He punches Rodrigo, and then he and Marizza both jump him. The couple that beats people up together stays together!
This is the two of them beating him up, btw. It’s not a weird threesome.
Mansilla undermines Renata’s class and keeps distracting her with questions, so that Tomás can call his mom and ask her to come to the school. He asks her to bring as many parents as she can with her. Actual parental involvement at this school? Perish the thought. Renata cottons on that he’s just dicking her around, and Mansilla snarks, “If you explained better, I would understand.” The rest of the class is like, “OOOOH.” Whatever. As usual, Renata is in the wrong for trying to impose an iota of discipline on these kids. Mansilla keeps dissing her, even when Dunoff comes in, and eventually it turns into a whole shouting match, just in time for the parents to show up. Including Papa B! Oh, this will end well. And then, Pablo and Marizza come in dragging Rodrigo, and Pablo tells Papa B how Rodrigo kidnapped Marizza and beat him up. Dunoff’s like, “Pfft, this is no big deal, happens every day!”, and Mansilla cuts in to tell Papa B about the Society. Then Mia and Manuel run in with more evidence that Rodrigo didn’t manage to set on fire, and Dunoff’s like, “Oh don’t worry! We expelled Guido, so everything’s fine!” Guido’s dad is like, “WHAT.” Dunoff’s like, “All this responsibility at once is freaking me out!”
Sonia’s still all depressed over Marizza, and Luca says he has a friend who could hook her up with a show in Spain, if she wants to work there. Sonia’s all conflicted. I guess it’s suspenseful. I don’t really care. She decides that she should leave, because she’s a fuckup and it would be better for everyone if she were gone. Pepa, for once, gives some good advice and suggests that Sonia talk to Marizza first because she freakin’ ditches her to go to another continent.
Guido’s dad comes to see him, and Guido starts babbling on about how it’ll be good for him to come live with his parents again. Papa Guido slaps him and yells at him for getting involved with the Society and being ashamed of being poor, etc. He’s all disappointed in Guido, and Guido is shamefaced.
Marizza and Pablo produce-place Gogurt (memories!) while also discussing why Pablo risked his neck for her. They can multitask! She suggests that maybe he’s starting to like her, and Pablo snorts that he would never go out with her. Marizza immediately snaps that she would never go out with him either, so there! Aw, why you gotta hurt her like that, Pablo. Then Marcos calls and tells Marizza that he wants to see Lujan, and Marizza’s all suspicious. She finds Lujan and starts teasing her about Marcos, and Lujan insists that she’s not going to go back to visit him.
Every extra that’s been in this show before gathers in the main hall along with our main cast. Papa B gets off the phone with the school board, and announces that he’s intimidated them into approving the Society’s expulsion. Mansilla says that he thinks Rodrigo, with his crazy eyes and his pyromania, should probably see a psychologist, and Papa B’s like, “Therapy? What’s that?” Makes sense, seeing how the first person in line for therapy would probably be Pablo. Anyway, Dunoff reads off all the names of the expelled kids, which I think is just a ploy to eat up time, as apart from Rodrigo, we’ve literally never heard of any of them. Then Dunoff’s like, “Whoops, I forgot, Guido’s also still expelled. Them’s the breaks.” All the kids protest until Dunoff’s like, “Fine, whatever, if it’ll get you all to stop making me do my job.” That was easy.
So…the Society is expelled because of Papa B’s influence? I mean, I think that’s actually the most realistic way it could’ve been resolved, but it seems kind of counterproductive for a show that’s all about how important it is to be ~rebelde~ and fight for great justice. The kids don’t get the Society expelled by sticking up for themselves, they basically have to call in someone equally corrupt and have him strongarm the school into doing what they want. Again, I think it’s realistic and probably an important life lesson for impressionable teenagers to learn (sometimes you gotta ally with people you don’t really like to get shit done; see also: the discussion around the US presidential election, wherein even though Trump’s election was due to Russia’s interference, the left is also being split by purity politics and an inability to accept imperfect leaders), but it’s kind of a bizarre resolution when the kids accomplish so much else by not backing down (and having Mansilla excuse everything they do).
Anyway, now that I’ve ruined my cred forever by comparing this show to world politics, let’s continue. The Society leaves the school, everyone cheers, and it’s quite heartwarming. This would be a nice place to end the episode, wouldn’t it?
Ha, we still have a few more scenes to go. The love drama continues: Marizza and Luna hatch a plan to force Lujan to see Marcos. Meanwhile, Manuel thanks Mia for helping them with the Society, and Mia snaps that thanks to Luz, she’s going to have to quit the band. Manuel’s like, “The size of a girl’s boobs is not proportionate to how good of a person she is? NO WAY.” Then Gloria rocks up and chirps that Papa C is on the phone for Manuel, and he is pissed.
Renata and Mansilla fight some more about him dissing her in front of her class, and he snarks that he’ll give her another reason to go to Etchamendi. “What, are you going to moralize at me or hit me?” Renata asks. She hasn’t been on the show for very long, so I’ll let it slide, but we all know what’s coming: Mansilla does neither, and makes out with her instead. Uh…is this not harassment?
I should point out too that, perhaps sadly(?), there was no Avril Lavigne in this episode. What’s up with that?
