Rebelde Way 1×098: The Long Game

The opening monologue is back! Sometimes the shadow of injustice falls over us all, but we have to stand together and be ~rebelde.

We pick up where we left off, with everyone busting into the secret room to see Marcos lying on the floor. “Is he alive?” Manuel wants to know. Mansilla’s like, “I’d tell you, but you need to give me thirty seconds to pad out the drama some more.” With pathos sufficiently added, Mansilla confirms Marcos is alive.

Meanwhile, some much lower-stakes drama is going on in the cafeteria. Marizza accuses Sonia of cheating on Luca with Damian, and reams her out for “taking [Luca] away” from her. Marizza, he’s like twenty years older than you! And God love him, he actually has a moral compass and wasn’t going to date you anyway! Damian’s like, “Uh…I’m not sleeping with your mom; I’m a detective, and I was hired to look for Nacho.” Marizza’s like, “Oh.” Sonia and Luca leave, and Marizza tries to apologize, but Sonia shuts her down.

Luz sits on some sidewalk somewhere and cackles over the letter she wrote to Papa C: she’s pretended to be a fan of Erreway, and gushes about how she loves to watch Mia sing at the club. She gleefully runs off to mail it, because I guess she…couldn’t do that yesterday? Whatever. Luz is weird.

The ambulance comes to get Marcos, and all the kids fret. Manuel assures them that Marcos will be fine: “He’s strong,” he says. Is he, Manuel? Dude’s had like three asthma attacks over the course of this show. By the way, where’s Guido? Did they just ditch him? Manuel’s like, “Forget Guido, we have to find the rest of the Society.” Nico agrees to help him, as do Pablo and Tomás. Aw! They care! They decide their first step is to go to Dunoff, for some reason. Dunoff’s like, “Ugh, a student nearly dying is such a drag on my day.” Etchamendi comes into his office and he’s like, “Dunoff, I hear someone nearly died!” and Dunoff’s like, “Ahaha, what a wacky exaggeration! Children, please leave so I can lie to my boss about everything that’s happened today.”

Marcos’s dad comes to the hospital, and he asks after Marcos? The doctor’s like, “Uh…”, and the dramatic music kicks up again in the background. Wow, are they going try to fake us out about Marcos dying twice in one episode? After a dramatic cut away, they come back to the doctor saying that Marcos is in critical condition. He adds that maybe Mama Aguilar might be interested in showing up, seeing how her son might be dying, and Papa Aguilar’s like, “Eh, that’s not really her thing.”

The kids — Manuel, Nico, Pablo, Tomás, Luna, Lujan, and Marizza — meet up in the cafeteria to hatch a plan. Manuel says he has to confront the Society: he’s the most important male protagonist, ergo, it’s up to him. Everyone’s like, “You’ll end up in the hospital!” and Manuel’s like, “Pfft, if they couldn’t even snap Marcos’s skinny ass in half, they definitely can’t kill me.” Marizza stands up and announces to the cafeteria that Manuel’s going to defeat the Society, and two zitty kids in the corner nudge each other. Pablo, though, thinks it’s a shitty plan, and Manuel’s like, “Well, let’s see you come up with something better!” Pablo thinks he has an idea, and he runs off.

Mia throws a fit about going to see Papa C and Mercedes, and tries to talk Feli and Vico into going with her. Feli says she won’t go (and refers to herself in third person, again), but Vico agrees. They arrive at Casa Colucci, with Mia wearing those tragic jeans that I thought we lost somewhere around episode 20. She asks Vico to help hold her back every time she starts getting too snippy with Mercedes, and Vico pretty much has her work cut out for her from the start, because self-control is not Mia’s middle name. Naturally she doesn’t take the news about Mercedes moving in too well, and storms out of Papa C’s office shrieking that doesn’t want to live in this house. Well, it’s a good thing she already goes to boarding school, then?

Guido wakes up in his room, because I guess he wasn’t important enough to get sent to the hospital. Pablo and Tomás ask him for help in defeating the Society, but he refuses, saying the less they know, the better. Pablo snaps that if Guido wants to side with the Society, they’re not friends anymore.

Dunoff tells Etchamendi that the kids think Marcos’s “asthma attack” has something to do with the alleged Society. Etchamendi gets a very weird look on his face and snaps that the Society doesn’t exist. HMMM. Mansilla calls Dunoff and tells him that Marcos is in critical condition, and Dunoff’s like, “Ugh, now I have to have a serious talk with the students. What a bummer.” Etchamendi gets even more suspicious-looking, and tells Dunoff to get Blas to spread the news that Marcos is improving. Dun dun dun!

In the cafeteria, the tertiary girls tell Feli that Guido’s in the Society. She’s only the third-to-last person to know! She clutches her rosary and wails that they have to forgive him because he’s a lost soul, and all the girls are like, “Haha, no.” Guido comes in, and everyone starts yelling at him and throwing food. It’s like that scene in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Blas comes in and tells them that Marcos is doing better, and everyone starts cheering. Lujan wants to visit Marcos, but Blas shuts her down.

Mia throws a fit in her room, until Vico calms her down and is like, “Look, I come from a broken home, so listen up.” She tells Mia that she has to be sneakier, and show Papa C that Mercedes is a bad person. Mia has to be nicer to Mercedes, too, or Papa C won’t believe her. I gotta say, I love this. Of course Vico knows how to play the game, and of course spoiled Mia doesn’t. Character depth! Anyway, Mercedes comes in to talk to Mia, and Vico whispers, “This is your chance.” Mercedes tells Mia she wants to “make peace” (hacer las paces). I only mention this because it took me back to high school Spanish, where one of my friends accidentally wrote “hacer las pasas” (make raisins) on one of the tests. Good times. Anyway, Mia apologizes to Mercedes and hugs her. Heh. That’s going a little overboard, but Mercedes and Papa C are all pleased, and they agree to plan Mia’s quince together. Peter comes in and drops off the mail, and a scare chord goes off as Luz’s letter is among them.

The Society has a meeting, and they decide to let Manuel & co come after them, and go on the defense. Fair enough.

In Marizza’s room, Lujan is freaking out because she wants to talk to her tutor, but her computer isn’t working. Maybe she has network connectivity problems. Anyway, she decides she’s going to leave school and find him, “even if she has to make a pact with the Devil.” Uh, if that means making out with Blas, I think Mia already has that locked down. Just kidding, Lujan doesn’t have to make out with him — but she does promise to do whatever he says. “Are you sure about that?” Blas says. EW!

Guido cries and thinks about a black-and-white montage (to “Perder un amigo”, of course) of his friendship with Pablo and Tomás. Their love was so real 🙁 The montage switches to all the bad life decisions Guido’s made so far — well, not all of them, because that would take the whole episode, but the ones that led him to the Society, anyway.

The good times.

Sonia cries to Luca that Marizza doesn’t love her because she’s a fuckup as a mother. Luca tries to comfort her but she’s like, “No, I know I’m a shitty mother.” It’s a pretty touching scene, but I’m not going to argue with her there. She says she’s going to start leaving Marizza alone. See? Leaving Marizza to wreak havoc is pretty much the worst parenting decision she could make, and yet here we are.

Lujan goes to the hospital, but the nurse tells her Marcos can’t have visitors. Lujan lies to Papa Aguilar and says she’s Marcos’s girlfriend (oh, Lujan), and he lets her in. Lujan starts crying when she sees Marcos in the hospital bed. Aw! Poor Lujan 🙁 She tells him that he’s her first love (aw!), and then takes his breathing mask off to kiss him. Oh, Lujan. I’m not a doctor, but I feel like that wasn’t the smartest move. The doctor asks Lujan to leave, and she walks out in tears. Dammit, I can’t deny it, I love these two. LUJAAAAN 🙁

rebelde59501

Later, the doctor tells Papa Aguilar that there’s been a complication. Uh, was it caused by Lujan taking his freaking breathing mask off?

Mia squeals to Vico that her plan is working perfectly: she’s asked Mercedes to hold her party at a club that’s impossible to book. As predicted, Mercedes can’t get it for her, and Mia pouts. Mercedes suggests another location: “This place is enormous, and everything is white, it’s very minimalistic…” They’re going to hold her party in an Ikea? Mia starts to call Sonia and chirps that Sonia will be able to get the club for her, and Mercedes frantically shuts her down, promising to book it for her. She pulls a few strings to get it done, and Mia chirps that she told Mercedes that she must have misheard; Mia didn’t want that club — but that’s okay! It was nice of Mercedes anyway! Heh. Oh, Mia.

rebelde74301

Manuel tells the Scooby Gang that the Society hasn’t made a move yet. “Sounds like your plan failed,” Pablo snarks. Guido comes in and tells them that he knows where the Society’s files are. Everyone’s like, “Whatever,” and Guido says he’ll go himself to prove it. (Tomás actually volunteers to go with him, but Marizza stops him, probably because she knows Tomás will fuck it up for them somehow, God love him.)

Papa Aguilar tells Lujan that Marcos’s mother isn’t going to come see him, on account of her hating him and all that. Lujan tries to call their house, and eventually decides to storm over there and yell at her. Except…she doesn’t, and she runs into Mama Aguilar on the street? I don’t know. Anyway, Lujan blurts out that Marcos has died (OH, LUJAN), and Mama Aguilar faints dead away.

Mercedes cries to Papa C that Mia is messing with her, but he’s like, “No, no, you two are getting along so well now!” Wow, he fell for that faster than I thought he would. Then Luz comes in, and seeing that her letter still hasn’t been opened, she chirps, “Wow, what a nice envelope!” Heh. She’s not subtle. Papa C tells her to open it, and she reads out loud that Mia’s singing in a band. Papa C is not happy.

Guido finds the Society’s secret box under some stairs in the basement. Isn’t that where Nico and Manuel found their files that one time? Except it’s not the same box. Continuity! Anyway, Manuel and Pablo show up, saying they followed to see if he was telling the truth. They crowbar the padlock off and find the files listing all the Society members. They read off a bunch of names of random students that we don’t care about, then the Society leader walks in and catches them. Manuel tells him to take off his hood, as they already know everyone in the Society’s name now, and he takes it off to reveal Julieta’s ex-boyfriend, Rodrigo. I hope that wasn’t meant to be a surprise, because we’ve known he’s in the Society for like fifty episodes now. Manuel’s all like, “What are you gonna do, kill us?” and Rodrigo throws some kind of explosive at them and sets the floor on fire. Nice going, Manuel.

Am I the only one who feels like that the way Mercedes treats Mia is because of her mom?

No, that’s absolutely a huge part (if not the part) of Mercedes’s attitude. I think the show brings it up a few times.
