Rebelde Way 2×137: Bro Code

Previously on Rebelde Way: Pablo and Marizza got together for like five minutes, before Javier intervened with his lies and Marizza’s propensity for believing them. Oh, and Martavio finally bailed when he realized the law was catching up to him, and it was super anticlimactic? He didn’t even get an Erreway concert out of it like Mansilla did.

So anyway, two seconds after Martavio’s left, Dunoff has found another art teacher. I’m not shocked at the speed of it, given that Dunoff probably just grabbed a guy off the street without so much as a background check. I am shocked that they’re going to soldier on with art class, given that the kids stopped taking math, P.E., and ethics as soon as those teachers dipped.

(Lmao did Maria Jesus quit? What ever happened to her?)

Anyway, the new teacher’s name is Mr. Miranda, and Dunoff hopes the kids won’t bully the shit out of him like they do with all teachers who have the misfortune to replace someone that they like. Wishful thinking, Dunoff! Also, wasn’t Miranda also the name of that math teacher they had for like two minutes at the beginning of the year?

The kids go to lunch, and Tomás reminds Pablo of their triple date. Pabo’s like, “Oh, right, and Guido’s made up with Augustina, yes?” Guido’s like, “Uh…of course! She would never choose Diego over me!” Just then, Marizza and Javier come back. As ever, Marizza has opted to believe Javier “Lies About Everything” “Literally Met Him Two Months Ago” Alanis over Pablo, and she’s all cold and distant. Pablo’s like, “Wow, our relationship is five minutes old and it’s already falling apart.” He insists that he would never call her a trophy, and Marizza seems to waver, but then Marcos interrupts them. He tells Marizza that he’s going to call Lujan if she wants to join, and Marizza’s like, “OMG!” Pablo takes the opportunity to storm out of the room.

Papa C is having a meeting with his friend over Papa B’s meddling in his company. Sonia comes barging in — does no one lock their doors in Buenos Aires? — and starts yelling at Papa C that she can’t believe he would be so cold as to send the things she chose for their house back to her, and how very DARE, and did their relationship mean NOTHING? Papa C’s like, “Dude, we have company.” Sonia actually has the grace to be embarrassed by her interruption, which is wild. I didn’t know she was capable of shame, guys!

At school, Vico rants to Mia that Rocco lied to her and that all men are trash. Mia insists that Rocco is one of the good ones. Aw! Mia and Rocco’s occasional friendship is really cute when it pops up. She tells Vico that since they have the day off — for some reason, even though they’re in their uniforms? Whatever, I guess they just don’t have class because this school makes no sense — they should do something fun to take Vico’s mind off of things.

Marizza and Marcos call Lujan, but the dude on the other end won’t let them talk to her. Marizza pretends to be from Elite Way, calling about Lujan’s enrollment, and the dude is all, “That won’t be a problem anymore!” and hangs up. Marcos, for some reason, interprets this to mean that Lujan is coming back. Marizza’s like, “Or they’ve murdered her and she doesn’t need an education anymore because she’s dead.” Marcos is like, “Golly, you think that strange man on the phone was creepy?”

Having sown discord between Marizza and Pablo, Javier slides up to her all, “I copied some notes for you, wanna study together?” Marizza is like “That was nice of you!” because she is the most willfully gullible person on the planet.

Feli tells Mia that she wants to break up with Lalo. Are they even dating? They’re just like, making out sometimes behind Maxi’s back, aren’t they? I don’t know. And then she kind of tries to end their relationship, but they end up making out again, so whatever. Then she tries again, telling them that they’re from different worlds and no one she knows will ever approve, but Lalo’s like, “If you wanna date me, then you should date me! Forget about your family! We’ll be fine!” Feli’s like, “Wait, we?” and he’s like, “Gotta get back to work, bye!”

Vico goes back to her dad’s house and apologizes to him. He wibbles at her all sad that he doesn’t mean to be a burden, but his life is just falling apart, and O, how sad it is. Vico volunteers to move back in and clean for him again. Oh, Vico.

Back at school, Mia is looking for Vico. She runs into Rocco and he’s like, “Omg, Vico’s missing?” Mia’s all, “As if you don’t know why!” and Rocco’s like, “I really don’t.” Mia needles him about cheating on Vico, and he’s like, “I would never!” and Mia’s like, “Oh yeah? Then who’s THE GIRL FROM YOUR INTERNET CAFE JOB?” It’s more dramatic because she says the girl’s name, but I’ve forgotten it already, so whatever. Rocco gets mad that Mia doesn’t believe him and storms off to look for Vico. Mia tries to follow him, but then Papa C shows up to yell at her about Sonia.

Pablo rants to Tomás about Marizza and Javier, and Tomás has to the insight to be like, “Maybe you should just get over her. Like, no matter what you do, she’ll always believe the first rando who walks into her life over you, she has no respect for any of your struggles or the things you try to do for her, so…yeah.” Damn, Tomás has gotten wise, bro. Pablo bleats that Marizza has to believe him because he deserves it, which is getting dangerously close to the “trophy” territory, admittedly. Marizza shows up and tells Pablo that this time, she believes him over Javier. Pablo looks way too grateful, and Marizza looks way too smug. She believed obvious lies from a guy Pablo hated for way too long; this is like the bare minimum. They should both be embarrassed, but they’re not.

Papa C and Mia finally get down to what’s really bothering her: Mia thinks that Sonia is going to leave Papa C just like her mom did, because that’s what those trashy lower-class women do. “They’re not like us!” she wails. “Sonia is like us, and your mother is, too!” Papa C says. “Was,” Mia corrects him. Papa C doesn’t say anything to this.

Vico’s been cleaning for like five minutes, and her dad has already started verbally abusing her again. He drunkenly goes on about how she’s so ungrateful, and the money her boyfriend tried to buy him off with wasn’t even enough for one (1) decent poker game or horse race or whatever the hell he’s into. Vico has no idea what he’s talking about, but her dad tells her not to play dumb and starts yelling at her. That worked out well.

Guido rocks up to Augustina by the TV: “What are we watching?” “I’m watching the twenty hottest people in Argentina,” Augustina says. What a weird show. Guido asks her out, and Augustina tells him that she likes Diego now, but they can still be friends. Ha! Shut him down, Augustina.

Not-Vico’s Dad comes into Lujan’s hotel room, but she’s not there. Instead, she’s using Lola’s mom as a decoy while she runs off to the airport. Lola’s mom is a lil punk and immediately tells Not-Vico’s Dad where Lujan has gone. Lujan, for her part, is still waiting on a bus — I guess to go to the airport — and writing a letter to Marizza. Lujan, if everything goes to plan, you are going to see Marizza way before you ever send this letter. Lujan does explain, in her letter, that Blas believed that Lola’s mom was Lujan’s after all, so that’s how that worked out. Lola’s mom isn’t ready to meet Lola yet, but she might one day. Let’s ponder if Lola is important enough to get her storyline resolved in the next forty episodes.

Not-Vico’s Dad calls Blas to tell him that Lujan’s escaped, and Blas is all, “How could you have taken your eyes off of her!! Lujan is very intelligent!” People keep saying that, man, and yet she doesn’t seem to know how long snail mail takes. Anyway, Blas curses his henchmen for being so idiotic.

Francisco asks Mia if she and Manuel are back together, since he saw them hugging in the hallway. Mia denies it, but she won’t tell Francisco why she was being nice to Manuel. Francisco gets all salty that Mia and Manuel have a secret.

The police board Lujan’s bus looking for her, but she weasels out of showing her ID by pretending to be mute. They’re like, “Well, we aren’t looking for a mute girl, so clearly this can’t be her!” Jesus. What a crack team of investigators they have here.

Francisco and Guido play pool. Francisco rants that he doesn’t understand girls at this school, and Guido’s like, “Right? Like, Augustina cut me down to my face earlier!” That’s…that’s completely understandable, Guido. He and Francisco ruminate on their datelessness, and Marcos joins in. They decide to join forces to get some dates for tonight. Oh goody, it’s been so long since we’ve seen them objectify women and make light of sex trafficking! They call an escort service and Guido gets an erection on the pool table and it’s super weird. Marcos and Francisco are grossed out by hiring prostitutes for different yet equally wrong reasons: Marcos is all, “I don’t want to sleep with a prostitute! They’re dirty and I might have to make eye contact with them!” while Francisco is like, “Fifty pesos an hour is an outrage! I want my women as cheap as possible!”

Rocco goes to visit Vico. She apologizes to him for thinking that he was cheating. Rocco goes to kiss her and takes off the sunglasses she’s wearing, revealing a big old bruise. He’s like, “Your dad is abusing you again! Who could have seen this coming!” Vico’s dad stumbles out of the house all drunk and tells Rocco to buzz off, so Rocco starts beating him up. It looks like Rocco is winning, which is weird because he is a scrawny emo boy (no offense) and Vico’s dad is like twice his size, but okay. Vico starts crying at them to stop. Men don’t listen to women on this show, Vico!

Papa C goes to see Sonia and tells her that the returning of her things was Mia’s doing, not his. Sonia shrugs that Mia will hopefully be less of a dick now that they’re broken up — on the other hand, Martavio leaving has her worried that Marizza’s going to start acting out again. Papa C’s like, “Martavio is gone for good? Tell me more!” Sonia sighs that she’ll miss him — Papa C does not like that at all — since he was the better disciplinarian of them two. Papa C’s like, “Bro, you gotta just put on your big girl pants and deal with your child.” This prompts a revelation from him and he rushes off in a huff. Sonia gets all emo that he didn’t want to stay and talk to her.

I guess Rocco wins or at least escapes, because he and Vico go back to school together. Then Rocco engages in some victim-blaming, asking Vico why she “lets” her father hit her. He’s like, “I did so much to get him away from you, and yet you ruined my plans!” Because this is about you, Rocco, sure. Vico tells him that she’s too ashamed to report her father, and Rocco suggests that she at least go to a support group.

Meanwhile, Sol is on her forced date with Blas’s cousin. Not creepy at all! She tells him that she likes him, but he rejects her — not because she’s a teenager or anything, or even because he’s dating another teenager, but because he doesn’t want to step on Blas’s toes. This man is garbage, but what could we expect from a relative of Blas’s? Anyway, he tells Sol that he feels really bad for Blas and doesn’t want to hurt him anymore — Blas has suffered enough from when he was committed to that mental hospital! Sol is like, “Say what?” I am also like “Say what?” but mostly because I strongly disagree that Blas has suffered enough.

Guido, Francisco, and Marcos go to meet the prostitute they called — whose name seems to be Jenny, as in “for a good time call” — but they accidentally end up at a convent. The woman who greets them tries to get them to turn away from their path of debauchery and they’re like, “God wants us to abuse women!” and run off. I guess it’s supposed to be funny. I don’t know. I don’t know why this show ever thinks I’m rooting for Guido get with a girl, because I know it will surely only end sadly for her. Anyway, after that they go to some other house and meet three girls to hook up with and it’s super objectifying and gross.

Marizza emos that she doesn’t know why Javier lied to her so much. Pablo’s like, “Because he’s garbage, have you not figured that out yet?” Heh. Tomás and Pilar show up for their triple date, but none of them can find Guido, so they run off to look for him. Javier takes the opportunity to try and ingratiate himself to Marizza again, but then the rest of their group shows up again. Tomás says Guido’s going to meet them with his new date at the restaurant, and they all have a hearty chuckle at his failure to get Augustina back. Pablo sighs that he couldn’t find his cell phone, and that’s why he couldn’t call Guido himself. The group leaves, and Javier evilly chuckles that Pablo will never get his phone back. Never! Sadly for Javier, the year is 2003 and we hadn’t become totally reliant on cell phones yet, so I don’t think this will screw Pablo’s life up as badly as he wants it to.

Mia tries to convince Manuel that she and Francisco are just friends, and Manuel sighs that he has totally accepted that they’re dating, and he gives them his blessing because Francisco’s a good guy. Francisco’s probably going to give Mia an STD at this rate, but whatever. Mia’s like, “…thanks?” but gets distracted by some rando giving her the phone for Manuel. He’s like, “I’m not going to bother to actually look for him because having you take this message would be more dramatic.” The phone call is from Manuel’s doctor, of course, who has bad news.

Hilda finagles Sonia and Papa C into dinner together. She’s like, “Don’t be idiots about dating, because you’ll end up separated for fifty years like me and Hilario and then only have one night together before one of you dies of a heart attack.” Not in so many words. Papa C and Sonia confess their love and make up. Papa C tells Sonia about his fight with Mia, and admits that he still hasn’t told Mia that her mom is still alive. Sonia’s like, “Yeah, having experienced her wrath when she’s displeased, I can see why you’re iffy on that now.”

The kids go on their triple date. Pablo and Tomás are charmed by Jenny, but Marizza and Pilar are immediately like, “Did Guido hire an escort to come to dinner with us?” Heh. Jenny keeps trying to hit on Pablo and Tomás, to Marizza and Pilar’s displeasure. Jenny eventually figures out that she’s hanging out with a bunch of teenagers and swans out of there.

Meanwhile, Francisco and Marcos are being awkward with Jenny’s friends. One of the girls is trying to heavily hint to Marcos that he’s in a brothel and she’s not using her real name, but he’s all, “Oh, your stage name is Melody! Are you like, an actress?” I swear. Francisco, on the other hand, is getting sloshed and ranting that he doesn’t know WHY he’s so mad that he saw Mia and Manuel hugging, but he IS and he doesn’t LIKE Mia, he just thinks she’s a beautiful fragile angel who is too good for this earth! The lady he’s with is like, “Yeah, you definitely like her, bro.” Jesus, poor Mia. Manuel to Francisco is truly a lateral move.

Blas is in the teachers’ lounge, ranting to his minion who looks like Vico’s dad that he KNOWS Lujan escaped, and they need to find her RIGHT NOW so they can get their kidnapping plan back on track. And then Lujan waltzes in the door behind him. Hee! I missed her.

Manuel finally apologizes to Mia for being such a complete dickhead for the past 137 episodes. He BSes some stuff about how he was just trying to be a macho Mexican — let’s not forget our stereotypes in such an emotional moment! — but the truth is, he’s just scared. Mia’s like, “Oh, well, I guess now is the time to tell you that your doctor called with even worse news.” Manuel cries and puts his thumb in his mouth, as he always does when he’s distressed.

Javier greets ~someone~ at the door and says he has something to tell them about Pablo. I think it’s meant to be Papa B? But gosh, the hair doesn’t look frizzy enough.
