Rebelde Way 2×122: To Freedom!

Sorry for the lack of screencaps; sadly I couldn’t get the video to convert properly. Caps will be added once I can get it to work!

Previously on Rebelde Way: Papa C found out that Manuel didn’t go to the doctor and he’s all upset. Whatever, like it would be a big tragedy if Manuel fell over and died. Meanwhile, ~someone~ copied a little packet of Neruda poems for Marizza. Let’s see how that plays out, shall we?

So Marizza’s like, “This book of Neruda poems is sooooo thoughtful. I would definitely make out with whoever gave it to me!” and Javier’s all like, “Well, in that case, it’s definitely from me.” He goes in for a kiss and Marizza lets him. MARIZZA, WHY. Pablo walks in on them and is all, “The fuck, step off my not-girlfriend!” He and Javier get into a pissing match and Marizza stomps off all annoyed at Pablo’s immaturity.

Pablo’s like, “Dude, I wrote that book of poems, what are you doing?” Javier’s like, “Behind every romantic gesture is me, smiling and taking credit.” He snipes that Marizza WILL be his, and he WILL win her and keep her in a closet in his house never to see the light of day again, probably. He storms off to go lie to Marizza some more, while Pablo yells, “She’s not a trophy!” after him. That’s an astonishing sentiment from a guy on this show, honestly.

Papa C storms up to Manuel and tells him that he is going to the doctor and Papa C will be watching him every moment to make sure he does. Sabrina is with Manuel and she gets all pissy again that the Coluccis are nosing around Manuel. Manuel whines that he haaaaas to do whatever Papa C says, because he’s been stuck in some kind of time warp ever since he arrived here and he’s not a legal adult yet. Sabrina snaps at him to man up and do what he has to do, and Manuel’s like, “You’re right. I’m going to do what I should have done from the start.” So…he’s going back to Mexico? You know, where his family and his entire life was until he dropped them to fail at executing a revenge plot in Argentina? I mean, Manuel’s visa has to be expired by now.

After that, Papa C goes to talk to Sonia. She’s just coming out of her meeting with Dunoff, and Papa C’s like, “We must talk!” “Ahaha, I think I should leave you two alone,” Michi says. Heh. Tactful. Papa C does that thing where he acts like he’s all mad at Sonia, but he’s really mad that she’s not letting him support her emotionally! What a twist! He tells her that they’ll fight Papa B together and get all mushy over each other in the school lobby. That’s hot.

Feli gives Michi a letter for Dunoff, and snipes at Michi not to open it. For some reason, she then tells Michi that it’s a complaint letter, and Michi’s like, “Oooh, who are you complaining about?” Feli’s like, “Your job is to stay out of my business!” like she doesn’t go around spilling her business to anyone who will listen in the first place. Michi immediately goes off to open the letter. Hee. She sees that it’s a complaint about Lalo, trying to get him fired. She asks Lalo if he, like, really needs this job or if he’s just doing it for fun and would be totally fine if he were to get fired. Lalo’s like, “Dude, if I could work for fun, this is not the job I would be doing.” Not in those words exactly.

Meanwhile, Vico cries to Mia that Rocco is gay after all. Mia’s like, “I mean, did you walk in on them making out or something?” and Vico’s like, “No, but they were holding hands!” Not sure that that’s damning evidence in the land of kissing everyone you meet on the cheek when you greet them, but okay. Mia thinks that Vico should talk it out with Rocco, but Vico’s like, “I prefer to impulsively rush into my emotions and make snap decisions!”

Javier finds Marizza and confesses that he didn’t write her that book of poems; Pablo did. Marizza’s like, “Then like…why did you say you did.” She also says, “Pablo doesn’t even know who Neruda is.” Heh. Probably not untrue, although a better show might draw a connection between Pablo being a songwriter and reading poetry. Javier says he knows Marizza’s still in love with Pablo, but he’ll wait for her. Marizza, for some reason, does not ream him out for lying to her.

Fernanda cries to Belen and Pilar that Sol turned out to be a bad person after all. Belen and Pilar’s like, “Wow, we jumped ship like a hundred episodes ago, what took you so long?” They decide to reform the Top Group without Sol and do their little handshake move. Then Guido comes in and says he has to talk to Pilar: “It’s important,” he says. Pilar: “Nothing that happens to you is important.” HA! I love her. Guido drags Pilar out of there by saying the emergency involves Tomás, leaving Fernanda and Belen to plot revenge on Sol. They think that, since Sol lives for attention, the best thing to do is to do a bunch of fun stuff without her. This is so tragically accurate to how teenagers interact.

Guido manhandles Pilar over to his locker. She asks what’s wrong with Tomás, and Guido starts crazying at her that there’s a cure for her nymphomania, by which I guess he means making out with him, because he grabs her and starts kissing her. Fuck Guido! He’s the worst! And what is what all the guys in this season assaulting girls?

Thankfully Dunoff walks in on them and hauls Guido off of her. Expel him, Dunoff! I’ve had to watch him for over 200 episodes now, that is an attack on me personally! After they leave, Pilar starts crying in the hallway, where Tomás finds her.

Marizza tells Lujan about the whole Javier-Pablo-Neruda thing, and somehow Lujan still thinks Javier looks good in this story. Lujan, I love you. Please stop doing this to me. I think I like Vico better than her at this point. Anyway, Lujan says that Pablo is probably just trying to win Marizza now that Javier wants her, and he doesn’t really love her. Well damn, Lujan, don’t hold back.

Dunoff reams Guido out for daring to kiss his daughter, the part where Pilar didn’t want him to not even entering into it. Sigh. His yelling is interrupted by a call from Papa B, who wants to know how Dunoff’s mission to expel Marizza is going.

Speaking of whom! Marizza takes her problems to an adult instead, namely her mother. She tells Sonia that Pablo and Javier have her all messed up, and Sonia’s like, “I mean, I’d rather you date Javier, since his dad isn’t trying to kick you out of school.” I mean, Papa B is kind of Javier’s dad, the way everyone talks about them. Anyway, Sonia says that Pablo is clearly the love of Marizza’s life (or at least her designated love interest) and Marizza has to follow her heart wherever it leads her. I’m not sure we’ve seen any evidence that Marizza’s heart has ever led her anywhere good, but whatever.

In the meantime, I guess Pilar told Tomás that Guido assaulted her, because now Tomás is chasing him all over the school office, trying to kick his ass. Hee! Destroy him, Tomás! Pablo and Guido lock themselves in the teachers’ lounge, and Pablo’s like, “Let’s talk about this rationally, guys!” No, Pablo! I want to see Guido get punched! I HAVE WAITED SO LONG! Not that I think Tomás can throw a punch, but you know, it’s the effort that counts. Guido’s like, “How was I supposed to NOT assault her when she was writing me sexy letters?” and Tomás is like, “You have no evidence-based deductions for that conclusion!” and Guido’s like, “The letters were on the same pink paper with red ink!” and Tomás is like, “She wrote a letter on pink paper with red ink for her DAD, dumbass!” and Pablo is like, “Well, you have to admit that it’s a hell of a coincidence!” All this yelling draws Dunoff, and Guido bleats at him that he didn’t KNOW Pilar’s pink paper letter wasn’t for him. Dunoff’s like, “Why would you think it’s for you?” and it gets real awkward.

Michi confronts Feli about trying to get Lalo fired. Feli snipes that she should get Michi fired for reading Feli’s mail — it’s not her job to be nosy about Feli’s mail, it’s her job to take phone calls and deliver mail; and it’s Lalo’s job to bring people food and take orders. Michi snaps that Feli is a classist dick just like her mom and storms off. For some reason, Lalo sees this go down and feels bad for Feli. He tries to comfort her, but she tells him to mind his business.

Guido halfheartedly apologizes to Pilar for trying to maul her in the hallway, but she refuses to forgive him and flounces off. Suffer, Guido. Then Marizza rocks up and Pablo shoos Guido away so he can talk to her. Marizza blusters that Pablo probably just wrote those poems for her because she defended him against Sabrina, and Pablo’s like, “Yeah, I really copied a whole-ass love poem because you helped me with the band. NO, DUDE, I LIKE YOU.” Pablo says that “this guy” (Marizza: “Pablo Neruda, he won a Nobel Prize for literature”) just put into words how he feels about Marizza. Marizza is all twitterpated, but just as they’re about to kiss, Consuelo shows up. YIKES.

After the commercial break, Marizza bails, and Consuelo wibbles to Pablo that Papa B wants more intel on Erreway — even though he like, already knows everything about them and just isn’t doing anything with the information? — or he’ll let Consuelo’s mom die of telenovela-neosis. Pablo tells her to lie to Papa B about Erreway’s tour — Papa B already thinks he’s following the band around because of Marizza, so they should just roll with that — and he’ll pretend to be his dad and sign off on Consuelo’s mom’s hospital bills.

Mia tells Manuel that he has to go to the doctor, and her dad’s going to go with him. Papa C literally already told Manuel this, but whatever. She snipes that Manuel has to do it because Papa C is his guardian, and Manuel thinks Mia is lording it over him. Mia’s like, “I mean, it’s just factually true, but whatever.” Then Rocco shows up with Francisco’s friend Alejandro, who’s come to see Mia. Mia is overly happy to see him, which makes Manuel all salty.

Vico tells Rocco that they have to talk, and tells him that she’s not ready to be in a relationship. Rocco is all hurt and covers it up by huffing that it’s TOTALLY FINE that she wants to break up. Damn, show, they only got together like five minutes ago! Stop hurting me like this!

Lola tells Laura that she spent a day with their mom, and having Mama Arregui buy her stuff definitely made her feel better. Not in so many words. Then Marcos rocks up and wants to hang out with Laura for some reason, like they didn’t awkwardly break up a few episodes ago. She suggest inviting Tomás and Pilar with them, and Marcos gets all salty that she doesn’t want to be alone with him. Nevertheless, he goes to ask Rocco if he and Vico want to double not-date with them. Rocco’s like, “Vico dumped me, bro,” and Marcos is like, “But you just got together like five minutes ago.”

In the cafeteria, Marizza flashbacks to Javier telling her that Pablo copied the poems for her, but then she thinks about Pablo making out with Consuelo. The thought makes her so salty that she picks up her binder and storms out. Lujan comes back with two glasses of orange juice all like, “What just happened?” Hee.

Feli’s mom comes to the office to yell at Dunoff about Michi showing up to that party with Feli. She thinks Michi is a bad influence, what with the not fat-shaming Feli and encouraging her not to hate herself. We can’t be having that! Dunoff’s like, “I concur! Hating yourself is what this school is all about!” They call Feli in to corroborate the complaint, but Feli’s been properly shamed by Michi’s speech to her, and she defends Michi. Feli’s mom is like, “Well, that didn’t go how I wanted,” but she leaves without much fuss. And then Papa B arrives! This is not Dunoff’s day. He wants Marizza and Sonia kicked out of the school like now.

Meanwhile, Alejandro’s brought an entire DDR machine to the school somehow? I don’t know, he’s brought video games, and they suddenly have a DDR machine, and I feel like the show is trying to imply that these two things are related. But I also know that this show sometimes does things without attaching any meaning to them. Anyway, all the kids have fun playing DDR, but Francisco takes Alejandro aside and tells him to back off Mia. Alejandro’s like, “But weren’t you trying to set us up?” and I am also like, “But weren’t you trying to set them up?” Francisco says he just wanted to distract Mia a bit from her Manuel issues, not introduce a whole new stalker in her life.

Sol runs in after the party is over and is like, “OMG, invite me next time! Will someone be on a DDR team with me?” Fernanda and Belen snippily tell her that everyone’s paired up already. Rough life!

Marizza goes to Javier and tells him that despite his lying ways and her self-professed hatred for liars, she thinks they should get together. They make out. I try not to hit my head on the desk. Javier says he wants to keep their relationship a secret for now, you know, for the greater good of not busting Pablo’s lie open about the band. I remain confused as to why, if Javier is trying to steal Pablo’s life out from under him, he keeps helping Pablo out. I mean, he got Marizza to date him, but that was more via Pablo’s fuckups than any successful scheming on Javier’s part.

Feli and Michi have made up and are hanging out together now. Lalo joins them, and Feli hands him her complaint: she was going to turn it in to Dunoff, but now she won’t — as long as Lalo brings her more sandwiches! Everyone has a hearty chuckle over how Feli’s classism almost lost them their jobs.

Marizza and Javier go to the main hall and find Martavio and Sonia there. They want to talk to Marizza about changing schools — maybe to one that’s less corrupt and fucked up. Marizza’s like, “But I have to stay here, for plot purposes!” They suggest talking about this alone, but Marizza tells them that Javier can stay, as he’s her boyfriend. Martavio and Sonia are both grossed out. Heh. Martavio tells Javier that he has some bad news about Papa B.

Dunoff rereads Pilar’s letter and is all moved emotionally. He refuses to sign the papers expelling Marizza and banning Sonia from the school or whatever. Papa B is like, “How very dare!” and…signs it himself? Forges Dunoff’s signature? It’s not clear. That’s the whole point of signatures! You have to sign yourself! Oh, well, we’ll see what happens.

Sabrina gets a fax (not a fax!) from her dad, effectively ending Manuel’s guardianship with Papa C. Not sure how that works or how they got it done in an afternoon, but okay, whatever. Manuel squeals that he’s free, like he’s been liberated from indentured servitude or something. MANUEL, YOU LITERALLY HAD NO REASON TO BE STAYING AT THAT SCHOOL, LEECHING OFF PAPA C AND LIVING IN HIS HOUSE.

Martavio and Sonia tell Marizza about Papa B trying to expel her and she starts yelling about the injustice of it all. Then Papa B rocks up and smugly tells them that he and the whole school board have signed off on expelling Marizza, to which more yelling ensues. Martavio tells Papa B that how very dare he expel his daughter and they will see Papa B in court! Papa B’s like, “What’s that? Should I also start looking into how you faked your identity and credentials and are still hanging around children unsupervised?” Heh. He’s not wrong. Martavio is cowed by this, as he should be.

Sol goes to cry on Blas about how everyone is being mean to her. Especially Fernanda! Blas is like, “Tell me more, and I’ll abuse my authority for you!”

Javier and Marizza sit in the art room, fretting about what’s going to happen. Javier tries to assure Marizza that everything will be fine. She’s not that assured, probably because Javier lies about everything so it’s not like anything he says counts for much. Then Martavio and Sonia come in, and Marizza wants to know what happened. Cliffhanger! I guess. Is it really that suspenseful when we know no one in the history of this school has ever been expelled?

    God I hate Javier
And marizza is being so unreasonable imo
She keeps ignoring all the horrible things this dumbass does
Btw I absolutely LOVE your rebelde way recap reviews
They are so detailed and informative
I just love reading them ❤️

Thanks so much for reading! I aim to entertain 🙂

The most annoying bit to me is that Marizza (understandably) distrusts Pablo for lying to her and says she hates liars…but she forgives Javier for lying at every turn? Even after he promised not to? Make it make sense!

Can the Javier arc end already? It’s annoying and he’s lasting longer than Simon, Paula and the others I forgot their names.
Also can the Sabrina/Manuel plot actually go somewhere already?
Can the interesting things start to happen? When will Guido finally stop being a creep?
Ugh, season 1 really really was more balanced. I mean, it’s a soap opera, there’s no such thing, but you know what I mean. At least the whole Michi/Feli situation is kinda endearing when Feli isn’t being an asshole.
At least your recaps are going somewhere being funny and great! Lol

Bro, I have been waiting for Javier to disappear since like the second episode of his existence. He is the WORST and he is so boring. Like, at least Paula brought the drama and had her own issues.

It’s so hard for me to pick between S1 and S2, because I like Marizza SO much better in S2, but S1 on the whole was way less exhausting.

Thanks so much for reading! I’ll get us through this season of Rebelde Way if it’s the last thing I do!

Oh yeah, Marizza is getting some nice development. Pablo too. I won’t deny that I like S2, they have some interesting themes going on that S1 didn’t touch on, but if they cut out half of the episodes no one would notice.

But S1 had Logia, aka the scholarships racists. But yeah both had a great character development and Marizza is less tsundere (finally, I hate them so much)
