Rebelde Way 2×120: Speeches Upon Speeches

Previously on Rebelde Way: It was revealed to everyone that Martavio is not actually a teacher, and he’s just been trolling around Elite Way having unfettered access to minors without undergoing a background check or indeed having any sort of license to teach them. Surely the students understand that he cannot, in fact, keep his job.

JK! All the kids immediately started bleating about how unfair it was that a dude who’s been lying about his whole identity isn’t allowed to hang out with them anymore. Pablo got a brainwave that Martavio should just become a yard teacher like Blas — then he can do whatever he wants without ever needing credentials! It’s the perfect solution!

So Pablo runs in to Dunoff’s office to propose the idea, and is immediately smacked down by Dunoff (and Papa B mouthing “HELL NO” behind Pablo’s back). Pablo appeals to Papa B: he’s the owner of the school! Can’t he do something! I like how Papa B owning Elite Way is bad when the show needs it to be, but when the kids need him to bend the rules for them, suddenly the school being owned by a rich guy who does whatever he wants is a good thing. Anyway, the adults BS that they’ll think about possibilities or whatever and shoo Pablo out of the room. Cue the sad music!

The sad music continues as Martavio looks around his classroom and flashbacks to the good times. Remember when he faked his background to stalk his daughter and ended up making a bunch of 15-year-olds dependent on him emotionally while lying to them the entire time? The emotion is all too much and he starts bawling into Marizza’s Trapper Keeper. HA! Suffer, Martavio. Sonia comes in and comforts him. Martavio blahs on about how he was a bad person up until he found out he had a secret daughter, and then he turned his life around in the space of like three months. I’ll spare you some time and just tell you that the next like, twenty minutes are a succession of characters coming around to stroke Martavio’s ego and speechify about how much they all mean to each other. If you’d like, you can listen to this semi-relevant early 2010s bop instead of paying attention to all these corny-ass speeches.

Pablo tells Marizza that Dunoff and Papa B might be considering going easy on Martavio. Marizza is all twitterpated and thanks him, asking if he did all this for her. Pablo’s like, “Yes…but also for me.” He goes on about how much he loves Martavio, and Marizza is twitterpated x2. She says she and Pablo should go talk to Dunoff and Papa B together. They exchange smiles and are about to leave, but Sonia interrupts them. She tells Marizza that Martavio wants to talk to her.

Marizza and Martavio speechify to each other about how they have changed each other for good and honestly I don’t know if a musical number here would’ve made this scene better or worse. It’s like five minutes long and the general gist of it is that they have a great father-daughter relationship now after like two months. Or however long it’s been. Time isn’t real on this show.

Pablo goes back to the classroom and tells everyone that Dunoff and Papa B were unmoved by their affection for Martavio. Javier’s like, “Well, then we won’t leave this classroom until they let Martavio stay!” Because…it worked out so well the first time they tried it? Anyway, Dunoff comes in and is like, “No, we’re still going to fire and report him, bye.” Pablo says that Papa B will never let that happen (oh, Pablo). Martavio and Marizza enter, and Martavio tells the kids that he’s choosing to leave, and then he speechifies about how they’ve all changed him for the better and oH MY GOD, IF I HEAR THIS VIOLIN MUSIC ONE MORE TIME. All the kids cry about how he’s the only teacher that’s ever cared about him. Damn, what is Mansilla, chopped liver? Marizza tells them that if they ever want to visit Martavio, they can just come to her house: she lives with Martavio, because he’s her dad. All the kids are like, “Oh, so that’s why he always lets you get away with your heinous behavior and enables you in all your madcap plans.” JK, they’re just like, “Cool, whatever.”

Dunoff comes in and presents Martavio with a box for his stuff. More sad music plays as Martavio walks out of the classroom. Pablo hugs Marizza, and I guess the two of them are all shocked that protesting and throwing a fit didn’t get them what they wanted. Realism!

Meanwhile, while all this crying is going on, Sol goes to see Lola’s mom’s neighbor, and they manage to vague their way through a conversation without using any names. Sol gets confirmation that Lola’s mom had a daughter that she abandoned, and the neighbor notes that Sol goes to Elite Way. Sol goes back and reports this to Blas; the neighbor calls Lola’s mom and tells her that she ran into her daughter. Lola’s mom hangs up on her.

Max comes to school to see Feli, and — yeah, in the harsh light of day, he is not cute at all. Another day, another joke love interest for Feli. Max trolls around the school looking for her, not knowing that she’s bawling her eyes out in a classroom over her teacher. Eventually he drops by the cafeteria and asks Lalo if he’s seen her. Lalo is all salty that another boy is sniffing around Feli (because he ~liiiikes~ her) and tells Max that Feli’s probably busy with her boyfriend, but she’ll be back soon.

Martavio says goodbye to the rest of the faculty. Carmen isn’t too sorry to see him go, because she is a Bad Teacher, even though she’s not wrong when she says Martavio isn’t a real teacher. Then he leaves, for real this time, but not before all the kids gather and put up a “GRACIAS OCTAVIO” sign. Oh my God, we are halfway through the episode and he hasn’t left yet. I am TIRED. “We couldn’t let you leave without saying goodbye,” Marizza says. He already — oh my God. Anyway, there’s more sad music and everyone claps and confetti comes down from somewhere. He wasn’t that good of a teacher, you guys!! I bet none of you will get good scores on your SAT!!

Manuel is still trying to manhandle Marcos into impersonating him at the doctor’s. Marcos is like, “But what if the doctor can tell I’m not Mexican?” and Manuel’s like, “Idk, say ‘chido’ and ‘guey’ a lot and they’ll believe you.” And don’t pronounce your LLs like SHs! That threw me off so bad when I first heard an Argentinian accent. Anyway, Marcos wails that he can’t do it and Manuel’s like, “Too bad!” and kicks him out the door.

Papa C shows up looking for Sonia. Marizza overhears this and runs off looking for him. On the way, Pablo catches up to her and tells her that he had an idea: Erreway can practice at Martavio’s house, since he supports all of Marizza’s endeavors and it might distract him. Marizza is touched that Pablo is thinking of Martavio and thanks him again, some more.

Then Papa B rocks up and wants to hang out. Pablo’s like, “No can do, gotta go to Martavio AKA Marizza’s dad’s house!” Papa B’s like, “Say WHAT?” Nice going, Pablo.

Marizza tries to plant it in Papa C’s head that Martavio likes Sonia, not knowing that Papa C and Sonia have already had a huge fight. You don’t need to go to all this effort, Marizza! Marizza spills her plan to Lujan, too, and says that she wants Martavio and Sonia to get back together so they can be a family for real. Lujan ships Papa C and Sonia instead, and tries to deter Marizza from her plan, but when has that ever worked?

Papa B storms into Dunoff’s office and starts losing his mind over Marizza being a product of an unmarried relationship. Whatever, like he doesn’t have a couple of secret kids lying around. I’m amazed this show didn’t go the “secret half-brother” route with Javier and Pablo, tbh. He bleats that he wants “this person” removed from Elite Way. I’m assuming he means Marizza, since he’s already kicked out Martavio, but it’s a little weird since he always calls her “Spirito.”

Blas confronts Lujan over her bio mom living in Jujuy, and suggests that Lujan ought to go find her. Lujan and Marizza blow him off and high-five over Blas believing her story.

Martavio and Sonia have lunch together. Sonia frets over where Martavio is going to get the money to maintain Marizza’s lifestyle, and he’s like, “Well, she’s going to have to learn the value of a dollar then.” Sonia clutches her pearls at the thought of Marizza learning to budget. Like a plebe! Sonia admits that he’s right and they beam at each other. Papa B walks by at this minute and gets all salty at the sight of them together.

Back at school, Marizza tells Mia her plan to break Sonia and Papa C up, and Mia agrees to start dropping hints about Martavio around her dad. Then Francisco rocks up and asks Mia if she wants to meet a friend of his. Mia says no, but Marizza and Francisco needle her into accepting. I mean, anyone is an upgrade from Manuel, although I wouldn’t blame Mia for swearing off men forever and joining a convent.

Admittedly, their faces do express my emotions at the thought of Mia dating someone other than Manuel.

Guido tells Pablo that he thinks Pilar is sending him sexy letters, and Pablo’s like, “Say WHAT?” Hilariously, Guido first only says that he thinks “a friend’s girl” is sending him the letters, and Pablo’s like, “IS IT MARIZZA?” like, A) she’s not your girlfriend, Pablo, and B) Marizza would never send sexy letters to Guido. Let’s give her a little more credit. Pablo doesn’t think it’s Pilar, but they agree to keep it from Tomás anyway. Tomás rocks up right then and is like, “WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?” really aggressively for some reason. They ask if Pilar ever talks about Guido, and Tomás is like, “Oh yeah, all the time, she kind of hates him.” Guido thinks that this just means Pilar is trying to get information about him from Tomás.

Mia gushes to Vico and Rocco about Marizza’s plan to break up Sonia and Papa C. Vico and Rocco are both like, “That’s kind of fucked up and also complex, like what are you going to do when one of the adults finds out?” Mia’s like, “Stop saying words.” She runs off, and Rocco’s like, “So speaking of dads, have you ever heard from yours since he left the show?” Nice segue. Vico says that he calls sometimes to ask for money, which Vico’s been giving him. Rocco’s all upset that Vico didn’t tell him that her dad called — he’s weirdly overbearing about it, like, you’re 15 years old! What are you going to do! — but also understandable, all things considered. They get distracted by making out, though, so I guess this is a plotline for another day. Then Dani comes in and asks Rocco to talk, but Vico cuts in and says that Rocco’s busy. Dani leaves in a huff, and Vico tells Rocco that Dani is clearly in love with him.

Feli’s mom calls, thinking she has a boyfriend. Feli is confused and bleats that her mom is crazy. She finds out that Max doesn’t want to date her anymore since he thinks that she has a boyfriend. She thinks Michi told him this, so she storms off to yell at her. Michi snaps at her not to disrespect her — “I’m not Gloria!” she says. Heh. I like that Gloria is one of the few ex-characters everyone remembers. To be fair, she put up with so much shit, she deserves not to be forgotten. Anyway, Michi denies telling Max anything. Feli hurries to catch up and assure him that she’s not dating anyone, and finds out that Lalo told him this. She storms off to kick Lalo’s ass, and Max grins that “she’s crazy about [him].” Please love yourself, Feli.

Lola’s mom calls the school. Blas overhears Michi answer the phone and take her name — Maria Villalva(?) — and he grabs the phone from her. He’s like, “If you’re calling for your daughter, her name is Lujan.” Oooh, but it’s not! Who could have guessed that there were two sad orphan girls whose names start with L in this school?

Rocco meets up with Dani. Dani tells him that he’s in love with him, to the surprise of no one. Rocco’s like, “Oh, Vico was right.” Because, you know, obviously the gay character is in love with the only main character he hangs around. Dani couldn’t possibly have any other friends that he sees more often than like, once every ten episodes.

Javier asks if he can come to Erreway’s rehearsal today, under the pretense of seeing Martavio. Pablo’s like, “Fine, then I’ll invite Consuelo!” Oh, and Francisco’s also coming along to introduce his friend to Mia. Man, everyone and their mom is coming to that rehearsal. Papa C will probably show up, too, since Mia told him that Sonia and Martavio are hanging out again. Maybe a fight will break out in the midst of all these love triangles. I can hope!

Somehow, this episode is still going. Dunoff tells Sonia that Papa B wants to kick Marizza out for being born out of wedlock. Sonia’s all shocked.

At Martavio’s house, everyone and their mom is crammed into his living room. Erreway finishes a song, and Consuelo hangs all over Pablo to tell him how awesome he is. Marizza gets all salty at the sight of this. Mia asks where Francisco’s friends with, and he pulls some obvious BS about how his friend couldn’t make it. Manuel is all disturbed by Mia asking after a boy that’s not him. Martavio hustles everyone off to eat, leaving Pablo and Marizza alone. Pablo and Marizza both try to follow, and Martavo’s like, “NO! YOU TWO STAY, AND EVERYONE ELSE LEAVE. FOR SHIPPING PURPOSES.” Pablo and Marizza set the table together while putting their faces super close together. Pablo asks Marizza why she’s willing to tell God and everyone that Martavio is her dad, but she won’t admit that she loves Pablo as much as he loves her. Would be hilarious if everyone walked back in on them right about now!
