Previously on Rebelde Way: Marizza thinks that Mia wants to kick her out of the band! Except she doesn’t! And then Mia’s like, “You’re crazy and so is your mom” so Marizza jumps her and everyone just watches them pull each other’s hair out for a whole minute.
Martavio eventually breaks them up and demands to know the meaning of all this. They yell at each other some more and eventually Martavio sends Mia away so he can discipline Marizza on his own. He’s like, “You must obey me when I say to stop jumping your classmates!” and Marizza’s like, “No, because fuck you.” Martavio yells at her to grab her things because they’re going back to the house so she can think about what she’s done.
Meanwhile, Sol and Blas have just finished macking it in the teachers’ lounge. Blas tells her that they can’t do it again because Dunoff is onto his creepin’ ways, and he can’t get busted with another student. “It was Mia’s fault, wasn’t it?” Sol asks, and Blas confirms. Ugh. No, it was not Mia’s fault that you abused your position of power, you creep. He tells Sol not to hit on him again.
Guido has lunch with Augustina and her dad, but he’s all emo over not being able to cheat on her with other girls. Augustina’s dad suggests that they go on another outing in his truck, but Guido makes excuses over being tired and leaves. Augustina is salty that her dad only ever wants to hang out with Guido and do dumb boy things.
Manuel apologizes to Francisco for being a dick. “You’ve really changed,” Francisco says. Oh, Francisco, he really hasn’t. Let’s all stop acting like Manuel being a jerk is anything new. Manuel shows Francisco the list of hiring companies that Papa C gave him, and whines that he doesn’t want to take any more charity from the Coluccis. Just then, Marizza storms in and yells at Manuel for not telling Mia off when Mia said that Marizza should be kicked out of Erreway. Manuel’s like, “None of those things happened,” and Marizza yells at him that she knows for a FACT that it happened because she has her CONTACTS. Manuel is like, “We would never kick you out of the band. There must always be four, that was established every single time someone tried to leave in season one.” Marizza huffs that Pablo told her so, and then they sort of stare at each other and Manuel’s like, “According to PABLO?” and Marizza’s like, “…okay, fair.” Then Martavio comes and drags her off. Before she leaves, though, Marizza sneaks into Pablo’s room and breaks all of his CDs. Guido, who’s napping, eventually wakes up and sees all the broken CDs.
Over in Mia’s room, she’s having a meltdown because Marizza messed up her hair. Never change, Mia. Feli fusses her, and Mia yells at Vico for not also fussing over her. Vico’s like, “Sorry, I was busy thinking about one of our classmates suffering a homophobic attack.” She’s flashbacking to the time when Rocco was trying to convince her to go to the police, and she told him that they didn’t believe her. OMG, do you think there might be parallels between Rocco and Vico’s stories? For some reason, that revelation about corrupt authority figures makes the girls decide to…tell Papa B about Rocco’s attack. Because they think he’s…less corrupt than the police? What universe are they living in?
Papa B meets Pablo at school and wants to spend Sunday doing corrupt politician shit with him or whatever. Pablo doesn’t want to, and Papa B accuses him of liking Martavio better than him. He’s about to drag him off, but Mia, Vico, and Feli run up to tell him about what happened to Rocco. Papa B pretends to care for like five seconds, but then they mentioned that the attack took place off campus. Papa B’s like, “Oh, well, then it’s none of my business. Bye.”
Martavio drags Marizza back to his apartment to lecture her. Marizza snaps at him that he was out of her life up until a few months ago, so she doesn’t have to listen to him. This argument would be more effective if she didn’t go running to him every time she was mad at Sonia. He snaps at her that she’s grounded all day and has to stay in his apartment. But he doesn’t…watch her or lock the door? So literally the second he leaves the room, Marizza storms on out. Nice going, Martavio.
Augustina is emo about Guido ditching her, so Pilar suggests that she go on a double date with her and Tomás. She doesn’t want to invite Guido’s dumbass, though, so she basically grabs Diego as he walks by and invites him out with them. Like all boys on this show, Diego will go on a date with literally any girl that asks, so he agrees.
Papa C and Sonia are arguing about Mia’s behavior, again, some more. Papa C’s like, “She said she was fine, so it’s fine!” and Sonia’s like, “No, she was saying ‘Fine’ in that way that passive-aggressive teenagers do, which means that it’s NOT fine.” In Sonia’s defense, she’s definitely spent more time with Marizza over the past few years than Papa C has with Mia, so if anyone knows passive-aggressive teenage behavior, it’s Sonia. Speaking of which! Marizza shows up looking for sympathy from Sonia. Papa C hides while Sonia tells Marizza that she can’t stay here. She says that she wants Marizza to come home, but not because she’s throwing a fit at Martavio. Then Papa C’s phone rings, and Sonia has to play it off like it’s hers.
Back at school, Mia, Vico, and Feli try to bring their case about Rocco to Dunoff. They haven’t even gotten the whole story out before Feli fucks up and says that Papa B already blew them off, because the incident took place off campus. Dunoff’s like, “Well, then, nevermind, it’s not important to me either!” The girls decide to investigate it themselves. YES! \O/ I live for Mia and her friends being girl detectives! Francisco shows up and Mia spills the whole sordid story to him — Vico tries to stop her, but Mia assures her that Francisco can be trusted. He can? I vaguely remember him saying some homophobic shit earlier in the season. Anyway, Francisco is eager to help them, which is good, because Feli bails on them because her familial drama is more important than helping sinful gay people. The three detectives immediately rule out all the guys from their class as the attackers — literally why? Sebastian could be one of them; we know actually nothing about him.
Papa B’s set up office in Pablo’s apartment while Pablo tries to get him to leave. Papa B’s like, “Doing work is a thrilling way to spend a Sunday and also I don’t feel like letting you out of my sight.” But then Ines and Javier come by; Ines tells Papa B that Javier came back from his dad’s house early and is acting all weird. Ines and Papa B go out, and Javier steps to Pablo and tells him that just because Marizza’s mad at him, that doesn’t mean Javier’s going to stop stalking her. And if Javier sees Pablo make Marizza upset, he’ll break his face. Pablo seems to take this seriously, probably because Javier is like several inches taller than him because Javier is a grown-ass man.
Marcos begs Laura to get back together, but she refuses because she loves herself. Well, as much as any girl on this show does. Laura’s mom comes up and drags Laura off before Marcos can whine at her anymore, so Marcos goes off to find Lujan. He tells her that Laura dumped him because she thinks that he still likes Lujan. Lujan’s like, “Clearly that’s crazy talk!” and Marcos is like, “Totally! We are definitely over each other!” They doth protest too much. He asks Lujan to talk to Laura for him, and she agrees.
Meanwhile, Laura’s mom is all sniffly over Lola being mad at them, even though this entire family hated her up until like two episodes ago, so I don’t know why she’s trying to act like she cares now. Laura’s like, “Yeah, that’s rough, but you kind of owe her the truth.” Their mom goes to find Lola and they have an emotional talk about how Lola will always be Mama Arregui’s daughter. Why are they all trying to pretend like they didn’t spend the past 100 episodes shitting on Lola? I’m confused. Anyway, Mama Arregui tells Lola that her bio mom’s name was…Mary? Meri? She also gives Lola Meri’s ID number, saying that that’s all the information she has.
We last left off with Sonia pretended to pick up the phone, then I guess at some point she actually called Martavio, because he drags Marizza back to his apartment. He tries to impress upon her that he’s disciplining her so that she won’t grow up to be a shitty adult. I mean, A) not Martavio lecturing someone on morality and B) I think that ship has already sailed for Marizza, no offense. He threatens to take her to juvie or whatever, and Marizza busts out the time-honored teenage line, “I hate you!” Bless. Martavio storms off, and Marizza curls up and cries while thinking about Pablo saying that he loves her and then taking it back. Poor Marizza; when will the lies stop?
In the cafeteria, Feli is watching Michi eat a sandwich and not hate herself, because Michi is amazing. Vico and Mia come in all depressed that their search among the boys from the other classes hasn’t turned up any leads. They snipe a bit at Feli for not helping them, and Feli bleats that the guys who beat up Rocco are way older — they could be really dangerous! Michi butts in and says that if they’re looking for much older guys, there was recently a meeting of alumni at the school. Maybe the attackers were one of them. Vico and Mia squeal that that must be it and run off. Michi pats herself on the back for a job well done, because she is amazing (x2).
Eventually, Martavio comes in with a cake and he and Marizza make up and eat it together. Marizza cries to him that when she was little, everything went her way because Sonia has no boundaries but now, everyone is constantly lying to her. “Don’t say that,” says Martavio, who lied to her about his identity for like three straight months. Then the phone rings, and Marizza asks if he’s gonna answer that. Martavio derps that his conversation with Marizza is much more interesting. Then the answering machine picks up, and it’s Pablo freaking out about something. Martavio’s about to answer it, but decides not to in order to make Marizza feel better. Oh my God, these two.
In Marizza’s room, Lujan is trying to convince Laura to take Marcos back. Don’t do her any favors, Lujan. She’s all, “He’s your ideal guy!” Way to quote “Inmortal,” Lujan. I miss when they would play that song, by the way. It banged for real. Laura’s like, “Can everyone just accept that I dumped him, damn.” She adds that Marcos is definitely still in love with Lujan, and Lujan’s like, “Awkward.” They’re interrupted by Lola, who cries that she has her mom’s ID number and she could find her for real, if she wanted to. Lujan says she knows someone who could track Lola’s mom down with the ID number.
Martavio and Marizza have some bonding time baking together when Pablo knocks on Martavio’s door. Marizza tells him not to answer it, because she hates Pablo’s stupid face and also how the hell is Martavio going to explain what Marizza’s doing here? Marizza, you recall, doesn’t know that Martavio already spilled the beans about their relationship. Martavio tells her to hide and greets Pablo. Just then, Guido calls, bleating to Pablo about all the broken CDs in their room. Pablo’s like, “Oh, whatever, this has to be Marizza’s work, I’ll deal with her later.” Martavio’s all, “It doesn’t have to be Marizza! It could be anyone!” and Pablo’s like, “Okay, you’re just defending her because she’s your daughter.” Heh. Marizza bursts out of her hiding place all, “How very dare!” and Pablo’s like, “My point exactly.”
Martavio dips out of the conversation and leaves Pablo and Marizza to fight about…whatever. Why is Pablo even here? (Was he calling to tell Martavio that Javier lied to Marizza? I don’t know! It’s never made clear!) Anyway, they argue over Pablo lying to Marizza in the first place, which is why she broke the CDs, and Javier is Pablo’s almost-stepbrother, so Marizza’s involvement with him is Pablo’s fault in the first place. “Right?” she asks Martavio. “Oh, now you’re the one asking for help from your dad,” Pablo snarks. HA!
Guido goes to the lounge and runs into…oh my God, it’s that kid who hung around with Lola and Bianca! I don’t even remember his name, it’s been so fucking long! Okay, I just looked it up in one of my old recaps and it’s Dante. What’s up, dude! Way to not have appeared since like episode 20! Anyway, Guido wants to know where Augustina is. Dante’s like, “I could tell you, but I won’t.” Guido’s all ready to break his face (Jesus, so much violence in this episode. It’s like they’re all turning into Manuel!), but Michi rocks up and snaps that Augustina went on a double date with Pilar, Tomás, and Diego. Guido’s like, “DIEGO?”
Full disclosure: I am TRASH for the unrequited love switcheroo trope, and for a brief second I thought Guido suddenly liked Augustina and I…was kind of into it. I’M NOT PROUD OF MYSELF. But no, Guido’s just afraid that Diego is moving in on his opportunity to hang with Augustina’s rich dad. When the kids come back from their double date, he tries to slug Diego all, “The hunting truck is MINE!!!” Whatever. For like one minute my opinion of Guido improved by one iota, but now it’s back down to where it always is, which is at the bottom of a pit somewhere.
Anyway, after Guido storms off to kick Diego’s ass, Michi’s like, “Nothing to see here!” and knocks some of the balls around the pool table. “Goal!” she chirps. I LOVE HER.
So the person Lujan was talking about who can look up the ID is…Blas. I mean, he is shady, so she’s not wrong. She walks in on Blas and Sol about to make out in the teachers’ lounge, but she’s like, “Whatever.” I guess Blas hitting on underage girls is just par for the course now. Lujan gives Blas the ID number, which he thinks is for HER mom, and not Lola’s. Lujan rolls with it and dares Blas to help her out. They put their faces really close together and it’s uncomfortable.
Michi confronts Feli about her homophobia, and points out that Feli hating Rocco for being gay is just like Feli’s mom hating her for being fat. Feli bleats that the church says being gay is a sin, and Michi points out that the church also says to love and defend those in need — “Just like Jesus and Mary…which Mary was it?” Hee. That was me in Catholic school trying to fill in all those stupid Bible character sheets. Anyway, Michi tells Feli that hate is bad and homophobia is wrong. Honestly, a surprisingly progressive take for 2003! I will say that this show tries to teach good lessons, it just undermines a lot of them by having the characters do dumbass shit all the time. I trust Michi, though, because she is amazing.
Rocco is at his house with Dani, trying to convince Dani to file a report. Dani is afraid to — he rightly thinks the police won’t take a crime against a gay guy seriously, and they’ll probably be really homophobic while they question him, and he doesn’t want to go through with that. This is actually a pretty pertinent scene, even 16(!) years later. Rocco agrees not to go to the police. Then Vico comes by — Dani leaves — and she tells Rocco that she was really afraid he was going to die. They hug while sad piano music plays.
Marizza asks Pablo why he lied to her about Mia and the band, and he admits that he was just trying to get her alone to talk. He tells her that he promised Javier that he would look after her. He’s pretty nice about Javier, and Marizza’s like, “Why do you suddenly like him?” She points out that Javier lied to her, and Pablo’s like, “But he eventually told you the truth.” Pablo, I related to you more when you hated Javier. He wants to know if Marizza feels so strongly because she likes Javier, and Marizza says, “I don’t know.” Pablo’s like, “So you do.” Well, jeez, don’t be so defeatist about it. They’re interrupted by a text from Francisco, telling them to come back to school immediately. Pablo’s like, “Oh, he’s probably freaked out by the whole Rocco thing.” Marizza’s like, “Say what?”
Francisco gives Mia’s phone back and chirps that they need Marizza to fix this for them. What does Marizza even know about homophobia? Do they just call her for every single emergency? (Don’t answer that, I know they do.) Mia’s mad that they’re calling on her after their fight, and says that they were doing just fine on their own. Francisco points out that they might have a lead, but there are tons of alumni who could’ve jumped Rocco. Manuel rocks up and wants to help, and Mia snaps at him that they don’t need any of his help. She’s probably right, but Manuel noses his way in anyway. Then Feli shows up with a list of people who were at the alumni meeting, which she got from Michi. Manuel says that they can organize another meeting and Rocco can ID the guys then. Francisco’s all, “Nice work, bro!” while Mia seethes.
Marizza and Pablo beg Martavio to let them leave. He’s like, “You kids are just so cute when you work together for the greater good! Punishment lifted!”I can’t be mad, I’ve had that exact same thought about Pablo and Marizza. After they leave, he gets a call from Sonia, and he thanks her for letting him have custody of Marizza.
Laura tells Lola not to get her hopes up about the ID, since Blas hates Lujan and probably won’t look it up for her. I mean, that’s fair, but Lujan’s gotten the address through the powers of contrivance. She gives it to Lola and Lola hugs her. Laura’s like, “Awkward.” Lola wants to go see her bio mom, and Lujan says she wants to go with her. Laura’s like, “Well, can I, your actual sister, come too?” Lujan shuts her down and says that Laura should stay at school and fix things with Marcos. “I would rather go with Lujan,” Lola says. HARSH.
Manuel storms up to Mia and wants to know why she told Papa C that Manuel told her about Papa C and Sonia. Jesus, that was a long sentence. Mia’s like, “Say what?” and Manuel snaps that Papa C confronted him about it. He did? Whatever, let’s agree that he did and move on. I’m so close to the end, you guys! Mia thinks that Papa C’s paid Manuel off to go along with the sham, and Manuel’s like, “No, I walked in on them making out, that’s how I found out.” “So it’s real!” Mia bleats. MIA, IT WAS OBVIOUS! YOU KNEW THIS!!! She hurts me sometimes, you guys.
