Previously on Rebelde Way: For five beautiful seconds, it looked like Javier was going to get caught out in his lie about having a hole in his brain, but as ever, this show denies me what I want. Javier loses his shit and yells at Papa B and Ines for DARING TO ASK HIM QUESTIONS. Instead of being like, “Holy shit, he crazy,” Marizza’s all, “Yeah, adults that are responsible for Javier’s well-being! How dare you ask him questions!” They storm off together, and I hit my head on my desk repeatedly. Maybe I’ll develop a hole in MY head and I won’t have to sit through this subplot anymore.
Back at school, Marcos and Lujan are going through the articles they found at the library, re: Ricardo Fara. Just to catch you up, they’re operating under the hypothesis that Fara — who died in jail — is Blas’s father, and Blas is involved in crime somehow, and Fara hired Lujan’s tutor in some capacity. Lujan and Marcos found out that Fara wrote a book while he was in jail, which might contain clues to what he was up to with his life. Lujan whines that she like, doesn’t want to have to READ, but Marcos convinces her.
Meanwhile, Laura and Lola watch Marcos and Lujan research from afar. Lola’s like, “Yeah, he’s totally emotionally cheating on you.” Heh.
Meanwhile, Guido’s being his usual unpleasant self when he gets a call from Augustina’s dad. He wants Guido to give back all of the presents that Augustina gave him by tomorrow, and Guido’s like, “This is the most tragical thing that’s ever happened to me!” He realizes that all of his presents are missing and then he freaks out.
Then Guido gets a call from Pablo. Guido wants to know where he is, as Marizza let them on a wild-goose chase. Pablo’s like, “Really? Because she knew where I was; she came here straightaway.” Guido’s like, “Well, she lied to us so we didn’t get to see you.” Pablo thinks this means he has another shot with her.
Javier and Marizza hustle out of the hospital. Javier apologizes for his parents ~not understanding~ the situation with his brain, and he whines at her that Ines and Papa B just don’t understaaaaand. My God, how can Marizza put up with this guy? His total inability to ever talk about anything besides complaining about his home situation is so off-putting. And that’s before you get into the part where he’s a lying stalker.
Back in the hospital, Ines and Papa B decide that Javier’s meltdown is the final straw, and he is 100% going to a school for kids with issues now. Would that it were true!
Guido calls Marizza and tries to ream her out for sending him and Tomas to the wrong address. Marizza’s like, “Eh, whatever.” Guido tells her that there’s been a complication with Pablo’s recovery, which makes Marizza fret. Javier reluctantly offers to create a distraction so that Marizza can sneak in and see Pablo. “You would do that for me?” Marizza asks. Javier heaves a huge sigh: “I would.” I think Javier is slowly coming to the realization that he’s not a main character and will never win Marizza’s love.
Lucas comes to pick Mia up, and she tells him that Feli and Francisco will be crashing their date. Lucas is not at all gracious about this, which is a bad look for him. On the other hand, if you told me I would have to spend an hour with Francisco, I wouldn’t take that well either.
Javier goes back into the waiting room and apologizes to his mom and Papa B. Papa B puts the blame on Marizza — she makes people ~rebelde~! — and Ines says they don’t have to worry about Javier ever seeing Marizza again. Javier’s like, “What?” and Ines tells him that they’re sending him to a new school. Javier loses his shit again, in yet another display of restraint that totally makes me believe he doesn’t have problems.
Papa C calls Mia while she’s out, asking how her date is going. He tells her that Sonia made him see the error of his judgment, and if Mia wants to run around all over creation with older men, that’s her choice. I mean, I guess she can spin material for Erreway out of it, and take their music down a more Lana Del Rey path. Mia chirps that Sonia’s just the best. She knows all about true love because she’s dating Martavio! Papa C, after his talk with Sonia, is like, “I don’t think so” and Mia’s like, “No, they’re definitely dating, I saw them holding each other in the faculty lounge.” Aaaand five minutes after making up, Papa C is pissed at Sonia again.
Pablo hears Marizza approach, and pretends to be asleep. She strokes his hair, and he “wakes up.” He asks why she won’t believe that he loves her, and kisses her. Marizza pulls back and snappishly congratulates him on winning his bet. Pablo’s like, “What bet?” and Marizza’s like, “Don’t play dumb, you know what bet!” and Pablo’s like, “I really don’t,” and Marizza’s like, “You totally do,” and Pablo’s like, “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” and Marizza’s like, “Don’t toy with me!!!” Jesus, these two.
So now we cut to Marizza crying in bed, and Lujan comes over to talk to her. Marizza tells Lujan what went down, and Lujan’s like, “I wish I could help, but I got brutally dumped by the school nerd, so idk what to tell you, bro.” She advises Marizza to talk to a guy, who might have better insight on what’s going on in Pablo’s head.
The next morning, Michi is dancing around the cafeteria, lip-sycing to “Roxie” from Chicago. I love her. Hilda walks in on her and scolds her that this is a school, not a theater. You could’ve fooled me, Hilda. Michi’s like, “Don’t take it out on me just because your husband is dead and you’re miserable.” Hilda’s like, “Speaking of Sonia,” and she tells Michi that Sonia is planning to give up custody of Marizza. Just then, Francisco and Marcos come in and try to order half the menu. Put poison in Francisco’s food, Michi! Michi tells Hilda that she has to go talk Sonia out of her dumbass decision, and she leaves Hilda to tend the bar.
Manuel comes in and asks Francisco if he’s found out anything new in his stalking missions. LET IT GO, MANUEL. He’s the worst. Francisco tries to do the right thing, for once, and says he hasn’t found out anything new — but then Feli blows it by rolling up and being like, “I had so much fun on our double date with Mia and Lucas!” Manuel’s like, “Excuse?” and Feli’s like, “Oh yeah, we all went out together! It was very romantic! Wouldn’t be surprised if Mia and Lucas had sex afterwards!” (JK, not that last part.) Manuel’s like, “Whatever, I don’t care! I’m going out with Sabrina now, so everything is fine!” He storms out, and then Francisco yells at Feli for being a snitch. Whatever, Francisco. Maybe you should focus on telling Manuel to get the fuck over himself instead of expecting everyone to sneak around with you.
Pablo is released from the hospital, and Papa B walks him to the car. He tells Pablo that he wants him to start embarking on following Papa B’s footsteps, and Pablo’s like, “And…after that, do I get to go back to school?” Papa B’s like, “School? Who needs school? You’re fifteen years old, you don’t need to graduate or anything silly like that.” Papa B sets Pablo up with an office, and says that Pablo is officially working with him. He’s going to let Pablo to go back to school eventually, but he’s going to spend all his free time at Papa B’s office.
Rocco rolls up to talk to Vico, and she’s a little standoffish and cold with him. He asks if she’s mad because he never really answered her question, about whether or not he’s gay. He says he doesn’t know if he is, which Vico is taken aback by. He’s mad that she would want to know, beacuse it’s none of her business — on the other hand, her abusive home life is totally HIS business. He’s all, “What do I have to do for you to stand up for yourself?” What? Way to make her abuse all about yourself, Rocco. Maybe — just maybe — being abused at home isn’t something that can be fixed by another teenager. I swear. Anyway, Feli comes up wibbling about Francisco yelling at her, which scares Rocco right off.
Francisco approaches Manuel, who’s sulking like a giant overgrown baby. He’s twenty years old!! I swear to God!! He snaps at Francisco that he has to pick a side: is he with Manuel or against him? If Francisco won’t stalk Mia with him, then he’s going to lose it and call Francisco fries freedom fries. Francisco’s like, “Fine, I didn’t tell you because you are actually psychotic, that’s why.” Manuel says he has to know if Mia is going out with other guys, because that way he’ll know that it’s really over and she doesn’t care about him anymore. SHE TOLD YOU IT WAS OVER WHEN SHE DUMPED YOU!! I don’t even — whatever. Then Francisco promises that he’ll keep Manuel posted on every single thing he finds out about Mia. I hate them both.
Guido sighs to Tomas that he’ll have to just give everything back to Augustina’s dad, but when he goes looking around his room, he realizes that literally all his stuff is gone. “THEY’VE STOLEN EVERYTHING FROM ME!” he wails. Heh.
Sonia runs into Papa C, and he’s a total dick to her and yells at her for getting down with Martavio in the teachers’ lounge. Sonia’s like, “What?” and Papa C’s all, “Don’t play dumb!! I know you’re cheating on me!!” Sonia finally gets tired of being accused of doing shit that she didn’t do, and she dumps Papa C.
Javier tells Marizza that Ines is pulling him out of Elite Way. Marizza’s like, “You have to fight for your right to stay in this terrible school!” and Javier whines that there’s nothing that he can do. He blames Pablo for getting him kicked out of school like it’s not his own immature meltdowns that caused this, and then he and Marizza sap all over each other about how much they mean to each other. You two met like a month agao!!! Then Ines rolls up and drags him away. Tragically, this is not the last we will see of Javier.
Vico tells Mia that Manuel and Sabrina are going out. Mia is sad about this, even though she shouldn’t be. You’re free, Mia! Manuel and his entitlement issues and ugly bleached hair are Sabrina’s problems now!
Lujan rolls up to Blas and tells him that she knows that his dad wrote a book, and she’s sure that that book is full of secrets about Blas and her tutor. And she’s going to find that book, and it’s going to tell her everything! Blas freaks out and yells at her that she’s wrong. Chill out, Blas. She’s not going to find that book for like another twenty episodes at least. Lujan is all confident that she’s close to uncovering her tutor’s identity, and Marcos watches them from afar all, “She’s so hot when she’s destroying other people emotionally!” Laura walks in and sees Marcos watching Lujan — she tries to talk to him, but he’s like, “Shh, I’m blowing you off for my ex-girlfriend.” Oh, Laura. Deep down, you know where this is going.
Vico approaches Rocco and tells him that she’s already tried standing up for herself — she went to the police that one time, and they basically laughed her out of there. Rocco finally manages to empathize a little with her situation, and offers to go with her to talk to the cops again, but Vico doesn’t want to. She sniffles that they made her feel awful, and maybe they’re right, and she deserves to be hit for being a bad daughter. Oh, Vico 🙁 Rocco tells her that of course she doesn’t deserve it, and she has to get out from under her dad’s thumb. Vico says that as long as she can keep giving him money, her dad won’t hurt her. Rocco rightly thinks that’s a terrible idea, but when she tells him that she has a scheme cooked up to make money, he agrees to help her anyway.
Gloria comes to school in “disguise”, by which I mean she’s wearing sunglasses and a hat to hide from Martavio. He recognizes her right away, and drags her off to be all like, “What the F was that the other day?” Gloria blusters that the dude who came to see her is her ex-boyfriend from way back when, and she didn’t want to admit that she was a spinster, because it’s shameful for a woman of her age to be unmarried. Martavio strokes Gloria’s ego a bit and tells how how pretty she is and how loyal she is to her principles. Gloria has principles? I’ve been watching this show for like 200 episodes and I’ve yet to see any. Anyway, Gloria’s thirsty ass is probably falling in love with him all over again, but Martavio doesn’t notice. Then Marizza rocks up and asks if she can talk to Martavio — see, she’s taking Lujan’s advice and talking to a dude about her boy problems. Why anyone thinks Martavio “I didn’t know I had a daughter for 15 years and I’m now stalking her and her mother” is an expert on healthy relationships, I do not know.
That said, Martavio gives Marizza semi-decent advice — he points out that just because Pablo does dumbass things, that doesn’t necessarily mean that his feelings for Marizza aren’t real. He suggests that maybe Pablo’s bets are a way of getting up the nerve to ask Marizza out. Well, damn, the garbage man has a point. Promote him to garbage boss!
And I mean, yeah, girls shouldn’t be taught to accept mistreatment from boys under the guise of “he just doesn’t know how to express himself!!!”, but I do think that people tend to forget just how dumb teenagers really are. And Pablo is always really remorseful when Marizza gets upset with him (unlike, say, MANUEL). So there.
Anyway, Marizza’s all grateful for Martavio’s advice, and he gives her a piggyback ride up the stairs. Sonia comes in and sees them together, and gets all emo that Marizza prefers Martavio over her.
Meanwhile, Pablo calls Tomás at school and they try to carry on a whole conversation in class, with Tomas hunching behind his desk to hide the phone. I LOVE that he thinks that he’s being subtle. Tomás is my dumb fave. Pablo tells Tomás that his dad is making him work in his office. He’s trying to get information about Marizza out of Tomás, when Carmen catches them. She’s like, “Bustamante, I know you’re on the other end! SPEAK!!” and Pablo hangs up in a panic. Hee.
Pablo’s emo about working in his dad’s office for about five minutes, until he meets his hot secretary, Consuelo. She’s a little older than him — Pablo lies and says that he’s 18, like her, which surely won’t blow up in his face — and has pretty much no personality, like all the romantic false leads on this show. I kind of miss Paula. At least she had the distinction of being an emotionally stunted prostitute who had an obsession with high school boys. Consuelo’s kind of clumsy and inept, but of course Pablo thinks it’s cute.
Michi yells at Sonia for giving up custody of Marizza to Martavio. Sonia wails that it’s what Marizza wants, and Michi’s like, “Okay, maybe MARIZZA SHOULDN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT SHE WANTS.” Tell it, Michi! I love her. Sonia wibbles that Marizza feels like she’s always competing with her mom for attention — especially male attention, which, gross — and it’s killing her self-esteem. Michi tells Sonia that it’s not her fault that she’s so hot (lol), and Marizza should maybe stop trying to get with her mom’s boyfriends. Sonia’s like, “That’s nice and all, but I already made a decision and I’m not going to go back on it.” In response, Michi locks Sonia in the art room and dances away with the key. I LOVE HER.
Lujan spends the day calling people about…Ricardo Fara’s book? I don’t know. It’s not clear. For some reason, she has to call like ten places before she finds it, but she eventually does, and she waltzes away happily. Blas watches suspiciously.
Laura spills her boy problems to Lola. Aw! I like Lola, and I like when she and Laura get along. Lola sighs that they have tragic taste in men; maybe because their parents are so messed up. Laura gets all weirded out by Lola referring to them as “their” parents. I mean, even though she’s adopted, she was raised in the same damn house as you, Laura.
Michi tells Hilda that she’s managed to convince Sonia not to give up custody of Marizza, leaving out the part where it’s because she’s locked Sonia in a classroom. Michi tells Hilda to call the lawyer and tell him that Sonia’s calling the whole thing off. Then Mia and Feli come in, and Michi asks Mia for Papa C’s number. “Why?” Mia asks, and Michi says that she has an idea for a corset design that she wants to pitch to him. HEE. Mia’s like, “Sounds fake, but okay,” and gives her the number.
Mia and Feli go to a table, and Mia tries to convince Feli to double-date with her and Lucas again. Feli doesn’t want to since Francisco yelled at her. Mia’s like, “But we’re going to see that new movie, Amarte duele!” HA! I laugh because I think everyone’s seen that one either in Spanish class or as extra credit for Spanish class. That and Amores perros. Anyway, Feli refuses to go. Francisco rolls up to them, and Feli storms off. I respect her decision, but tragically Mia still wants to get them together. Francisco’s like, “Whatever, Feli’s feelings don’t matter” and presses Mia for information on her date. Mia has the sense to realize he’s being weird and walks out on him.
Meanwhile, Javier is in some weirdly dark room, getting his mental capacity quizzed by some guy. Ines? I don’t think this is a real school. He’s supposed to do some puzzles and drawings and word associations. Javier smiles evilly as he works on them. In ten years, they’re going to find Javier’s drawings of corpses or some shit in this building and be like, “OMG, how did no one ever guess that he was a serial killer.”
Weirdly, Marizza chooses now to call Pablo and yell at him for getting Javier pulled out of Elite Way. I say “weirdly” because tonally, it makes no sense that she would have this deep talk with Martavio about giving Pablo the benefit of the doubt, and then go back to being mad at him. Wait, was I expecting continuity from this show? Pablo acts like a jerk to impress Consuelo; he gives this whole speech about how, as class president, he has to remove the “bad elements” from their school. I didn’t realize being on student council involved supporting eugenics. Is that why ASB kids are so weird? Pablo waxes on about how he’s making important decisions because he’s kind of a big deal. Marizza is disgusted. Consuelo, meanwhile, is writing down everything Pablo said, because part of her job is to report back literally every single thing Pablo does to Papa B.
Guido finds Augustina and cries all over her that all her presents are gone and her dad is going to kill him. Augustina lets him, because she don’t love herself. She assures him that her dad won’t kill him, and Guido’s like, “Your dad is Nicolas Cage! He’s capable of anything!” Speaking of which, Augustina’s dad picks that very moment to show up. Guido sweatdrops.
Laura breaks up with Marcos. He’s like, “But why?” and Laura’s like, “Because you’re clearly still in love with Lujan.” Marcos looks all shocked. Could he, a telenovela character, still be in love with the first girl he dated? Could Laura have been a false romantic lead all along, just there to sow discord until he and Lujan get back together in the final episode?
Marizza makes Pilar help her break into Dunoff’s office so they can find out where Javier went. Dammit, Marizza! Just be grateful that he’s out of your life! They hear people coming and have to hide, and it conveniently happens to be Papa B and Ines. They have some kind of SHOCKING LETTER about Javier, and when Papa B opens it, he’s all, “No puede ser!”
The episode ends there, on a cliffhanger. Bold of them to assume I care enough about Javier to find this suspenseful.
