Rebelde Way 2×085: I’m Not a Regular Teacher, I’m a Cool Teacher

Manuel walks into his hotel room to find Sabrina there. He’s all, “How very dare you show up here!” and she reminds him that she still technically works for the band, and she’s here to take pictures of their shows. Manuel’s like, “Wow, Mia is not going to like this at ALL.” He suggests that Sabrina leave, since seeing her will only make Mia more emo. Sabrina’s crazy slips out a little, and she flips out that she traveled ALL THE WAY from Buenos Aires to Whereverthefuck, Argentina, and Manuel is telling her to leave because it’ll upset Mia? WHO CARES ABOUT MIA? Manuel’s like, “Yikes, I slept with crazy.” Sabrina snipes at him that it’s sad that he’s still hoping Mia will forgive him — because she knows that a woman who’s really in love will forgive anything, so clearly what he and Mia had wasn’t real. Again with the whole “love means never having to say you’re sorry” message that this show loves so much. Did Patricia Maldonado watch Love Story too many times as a kid or something?

I’m not over how terrible these new credits are. It’s bizarre that this season has gone through three opening credits so far — the first season stuck to “Rebelde Way” pretty consistently. RIP “Tiempo”, you were gone too soon.

The rest of the kids have made it to Bariloche, presumably without any more incidents or bizarre side trips to houses of ill-repute. The front desk guy tells Martavio that there’s no reservation for Elite Way, and Martavio’s like, “Unpossible! It’s one of the most prestigious schools in Buenos Aires!” I see Dunoff’s douchey attitude is really rubbing off on him. The front desk guy eventually finds a random fax telling him that Elite Way is coming. What is with this show and random faxes? Anyway, Martavio is like, “Alright, and we should have six rooms!” and the guy’s like, “No, you only have two rooms.” Ahaha, this school is so fucking cheap.

Sol and Fernanda walk around outside, while Fernanda cries that Marcos doesn’t love her anymore. Sol suggests that she get revenge, because we haven’t had any revenge on this show in a while. Fernanda’s like, “But how?” and Sol’s about to tell her when they get interrupted by some rando with even worse hair that Manuel. His name is Patricio (Patrizio?) and he and Sol somehow know each other even though Bariloche is nowhere near Buenos Aires and also he’s never been mentioned before.

They go back to the hotel, where all the girls are flipping out over having to share a room. Martavio’s trying to calm them down, but then Fernanda and Sol walk in, which only makes everyone start yelling more. So he just runs out of the room instead. Heh. He’s such a coward. All the other girls throw stuff at Fernanda and Sol.

The boys, meanwhile, are getting along swimmingly. They’re just chilling on their beds and wrestling homoerotically, as you do. Or maybe they’re actually fighting. It’s hard to tell. Marcos and Francisco tackle each other, and Guido has to break up the fight by taking off one of his shoes and blowing the smell around. They open the door to get some air, and they see two girls wandering around in towels, as you do. They watch them with their tongues hanging out, and see them go into their room, presumably so they can stalk them later. What? 3/4ths of them are in a relationship, AND they just got done buying women at the not-brothel. They’re out here acting like they’ve never seen girls before.

So Martavio is pissed about the hotel situation, so what does he do? He gets on the phone with Dunoff (presumably) and…gushes about how awesome it is. He keeps making pointed comments about how EVERYTHING IS FINE and THE KIDS ALL HAVE THEIR OWN ROOMS while glaring at the receptionist. The receptionist is just like, “Whatever,” because Martavio loudly talking about how awesome the hotel is is pretty much the opposite of complaining.

Meanwhile, the boys go down to the front desk and steal the keys to the naked girls’ room. GROSS! Can Patricia Maldonaldo please work out her internalized misogyny in therapy instead of making me watch it?

Papa B goes to Elite Way and asks Gloria how the Bariloche trip is going. Gloria tells him that Dunoff spoke with Martavio and everything’s fine. All the kids are accounted for, and Pablo definitely hasn’t blown off the trip to go play rock star! Papa B is suspicious that Pablo didn’t tell him that Martavio was chaperoning instead of Carmen. I gotta say, Carmen probably would’ve torn the boys a new one for running off to the not-brothel, and I would have enjoyed seeing that.

The kids go horseback riding, except for Francisco. Ah, I guess the whole stealing-the-keys thing was so that Francisco could get laid (again) on this trip. This is so dumb. Clearly the universe wants Francisco to be alone forever, and the boys should stop trying to thwart its plans. Anyway, Vico’s afraid of horses and whines that she doesn’t want to go riding. Rocco jumps at the chance to hang out with her, and offers to ride with her. He thinks riding on the trail will be boring, and suggests that they go off on their own. That sounds like it will end well.

Pilar is also afraid of horses, and asks Tomás if he knows how to ride. He does, and Pilar asks him to help her. Tomás is like, “I thought you were mad at me,” and Pilar says that she is, but she thinks she can forgive him. Tomás is all twitterpated.

Feli is afraid of horses, too. Let me make this quick and say that all the girls are at least mildly afraid of being on horseback, and the big strong boys have to help them. Laura doesn’t even have a horse, so she has to ride with Marcos.

(I forgot about Lujan. She apparently is the only one not afraid of horses, because she fears nothing and I love her.)

Over at Casa Bustamante, Papa B is pissed that Pablo hasn’t called him yet. He tells Javier that they’re going to take a guys-only trip to Bariloche to see Pablo. What fun! Pablo is definitely there and they’ll definitely have lots of family bonding time together!

We cut to some handheld shaky cam footage of the theater that Erreway is playing. Manuel whines at Pablo that he doesn’t feel like being filmed, and why is Pablo running around with a camera anyway? Who is he, Rocco? It’s so they can reuse this footage in Erreway’s TV concert, Manuel. Have some respect for the laziness of the writing.

Manuel emos to Pablo that even though they’re living the dream, he can’t be happy being around Mia not being able to make out with her. Pablo’s like, “That’s rough, buddy.” I mean, he’s kind of unsympathetic, considering he’s in the same situation with Marizza. Manuel’s like, “Also, Sabrina’s here.” Pablo’s like, “Oh, right, she gave me a letter for you.” Pablo, can you please react more appropriately to Manuel’s emotional crisis here. Then, somehow, the handheld camera — that Pablo’s not holding anymore — manages to switch angles and show the girls walking towards them. Continuity! Marizza’s like, “What’s that you’re holding? Is that your suicide note?” Ouch. Pablo BSes that it’s nothing, and the girls wander off. Manuel tries to help Mia over the barricade thingy, but she snipes at him that she doesn’t need his help.

Back at Bariloche, Rocco and Vico are having a Deep Talk about how she doesn’t think she can control her life, and Rocco’s like, “But you should still try!” and Vico’s like, “Wow, thanks, never heard that one before.” Rocco tells her that she’s just making excuses. This is all cut with shots of the kids on their horses. Then we go back to Rocco and Vico and see that Rocco’s standing like ten feet away from her. How are they hearing each other? Whatever. Then all of a sudden he’s standing right in front of her. So Rocco can teleport and we’re just going to pretend that didn’t happen? Anyway, Vico points out that Rocco’s parents seem relatively normal, as opposed to her dad. Rocco wants to know what exactly is going on with Vico’s dad, and she vagues that he DOES know, and he’s like, well, there’s this thing that I THINK I know, and Vico’s like, then you DEFINITELY know, and then he promises not to tell anyone and they hug. It’s genuinely sweet, but I have no idea what exactly they were trying to hint at.

Meanwhile, Martavio wants to take their horses up a mountain. All the kids are like, “This seems unsafe,” but Martavio’s like, “Would I ever put you in danger?” I don’t know, Martavio! You don’t even have a teaching license! Anyway, Feli doesn’t want to go, and Sol volunteers to stay behind with her. She tells Feli that they should go to a nice spot that she knows of, and they can take pretty photos. It’ll only be for a minute! Feli falls for this like a dumbass.

And I guess by “ride up the mountain” Martavio meant “chill and let all the kids wander off”, as you do. Marcos and Laura are hanging out under some trees, and Marcos frets to her that he doesn’t think she genuinely wants to date him. Well, she did kind of tell you that, Marcos, and you were all like, “I know you want it!” so this is your own damn fault. Laura tells him that she still feels bad about Lujan, because she doesn’t believe that Lujan is over Marcos. Marcos reassures Laura that he loves Lujan like a sister — and that’s kind of what she is, given that they were only dating because she was obsessed with his family. Hey! I was there, and that was not what happened! Anyway, naturally Lujan is walking by and overhears all this.

Sol takes Feli to some random part of the woods and then wanders off when Feli’s horse stops to graze. Feli gets off her horse to go looking for Sol, and then Feli’s horse ditches her. From the trees, Sol watches and laughs. I’m confused. Was this her whole plan? What was she gonna do if Feli’s horse kept up with her?

Rocco and Vico make it back to the hotel before everyone else. Vico asks Rocco again not to tell anyone that her dad hits her. He asks why she’s never told anyone, and she says that she always felt guilty and ashamed. Rocco says that Vico’s dad is the one who should be ashamed, not her. He thinks she should go to the police, and she tells him that she did, and they didn’t believe her. Rocco’s still all, “There’s always something that can be done!”

The rest of the class comes back, apparently not realizing that Sol and Feli are missing. They’ve been on this trip for two days, and Martavio’s already lost five kids. Amazing.

Meanwhile, Feli’s wandering around the forest, freaking out. Yeah, being alone in the woods isn’t doing much for her already-fragile mental health.

At school, Augustina writes in her diary and cries over how much she misses Guido. My God, he’s been gone for two days. Lola comes by and tells Augustina that she found the address of the hotel where the kids are staying, and says that they can tell Pilar the truth about Tomás, and also see their boyfriends. Oh my God, you guys can’t wait a week? If I had a Guido-free week, I would be relaxing in my bathtub with a glass of wine and a selection of fine books. I might also use that time to find a new boyfriend.

Martavio has finally realized that Sol and Feli are missing. He’s like, “How could this happen!” Maybe it’s because you’re not a real teacher and have no idea how to manage a classroom, Martavio! Sol waltzes back in, and all the kids are mad at her because they’re hungry and apparently Martavio hasn’t let them go eat while they wait. Worst. Teacher. Ever. Sol says that Feli’s making her own way back to the hotel, and Martavio accepts this. He adds that none of them are leaving without his permission ever again. I like that this didn’t occur to him until now. He’s so unprepared to teach teenagers, much less raise one.

Fernanda pulls Sol to the side and is like, “Isn’t it kind of dangerous to let Feli wander around the woods by herself?” Sol snaps that nobody messes with her. Fernanda keeps fretting, and Sol’s like, “Okay, you stop worrying about one of our classmates dying from exposure, and just focus on getting Marcos back.”

Lujan tells Martavio that she wants to go back to Buenos Aires. At least at school she has her Blas investigation to keep her occupied; Bariloche is cold and boring and she has to watch Marcos and Laura make out everywhere. Martavio’s all, “I can tell that you don’t really want to leave because it’s cold, but you have to stay so that you can grow as a person.” He adds that there are lots of struggles in life, but that should be fine, because Lujan loves fighting. Heh. Lujan’s like, “Honestly? I’m kind of tired.”

The kids finally get to eat, and Francisco, Tomás, and Guido try to order beer.  They’re making the same actor who plays the receptionist play the waiter, so it really just looks like one person works at this hotel. Anyway, he asks for ID, and they’re like, “Pfft, you don’t need an ID for one measly beer!” and the waiter’s like, “Yeah, you kind of do.” Then the naked girls show up, except they’re clothed now, and — I guess Francisco got a date with them somehow? I don’t know. I admit to not always paying attention when Francisco’s on screen. Anyway, then Pilar comes by and sees Tomás on a triple date, and she’s like, “What the fuck.” Then Martavio comes by, and instead of salting the boys’ game like a responsible adult, he agrees to let them blow off the afternoon activities so they can get laid. He’s like, “Sure, whatever, do what you want. Oh, hey, did Feli ever show up?” Such responsibility!

Feli is well and truly lost now. She finally finds a path down the mountain and thinks she’s found the way back to where they split up, but she finds a rickety swinging bridge instead. The look on her face makes me think she’s gonna cross it, even though she should really just turn her ass around and try to retrace her steps.

Back at the hotel, Lujan is looking at Marizza and crying that she doesn’t know what to do without Marizza dictacting her every move. That’s…sad. Martavio comes by and asks if she’s seen Feli, and Lujan’s like, “We literally never talk, why would I have seen her.” She asks if he’s arranged what she asked, and he says that he’s bought her a ticket back to Buenos Aires. She literally never — oh my God, whatever. Also, Marizza faxed over a letter to Lujan. YOU GUYS SAW EACH OTHER LIKE TWO DAYS AGO. The letter waxes on about how much Marizza misses her and how, whenever she’s nervous about performing on tour, she imagines Lujan there with her, holding her hand. That gives her the strength to go on, even though being separated is hard! Okay, A) this trip is like a week long, and B) MARIZZA, YOUR BAND SOLD OUT THE GRAN REX IN THE BIGGEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY. It’s kind of late to be intimidated by an audience!

Martavio asks the kids to split up and look for Feli. Wow, he has not learned his lesson at all, has he? Naturally, the second he leaves, Guido and Francisco make plans with the not-naked girls to meet up later. They invite Tomás along, and he goes with them, even though he was just making up with Pilar like five minutes ago. Speaking of, is Pilar not mad at all that she saw him on a triple date? OH MY GOD, WHO CARES.

After rehearsal, Marizza doesn’t think she performed well, and Mia cutely teases her over being nervous. They see the boys’ jackets lying around and Marizza groans that she’s not a maid. Oh, you know where this is going. She tosses the jackets around, and Sabrina’s letter to Manuel falls out. Mia brings it to Manuel, and — wow, I just realized, she’s wearing a lacy off-the-shoulder sweater with bright blue zip-off cargo pants. Those two things…do not go together.

This is bad, even by 2003 standards.

Anyway, she gives him the letter and asks why he’s treating her like an idiot. Is he? I mean, he’s kind of trying to overcompensate by being overly helpful, but we’ve barely seen them interact since they broke up. Whatever. He insists that he didn’t know Sabrina was going to write him a letter, and Mia’s like, “Why didn’t you tell me she was here?” I mean…because it only just happened this morning, and also you’re not talking to him anyway? Again, whatever. She tells him that he and Sabrina can start dating if he wants, because she’s over him. Singing together is hard enough; she just wants them to leave each other alone. They get interrupted by Manuel’s phone ringing, and of course it’s Sabrina, wanting to know if he’s read her letter yet. Mia storms off.

Over in a completely different genre of show, Feli is inching her way across the shaky bridge. Her foot keeps slipping in between the slats in a really obviously fake way, and then she trips and her whole leg falls through. And that’s how a kid dies on the trip and they open an investigation into Martavio’s teaching credentials and his whole ruse falls apart and he goes to jail and Elite Way gets shut down for negligence and endangering children.

No, just kidding. Sol’s rando friend with the frosted tips comes out of nowhere and helps her up. She is clearly in the middle of the bridge, so how the hell did she not see him coming? Especially because those frosted tips are BLINDING. Anyway, she wails the whole way across the bridge and it’s really embarrassing. They finally cross to the other side, and the music gets really creepy. Uh, is he going to murder Feli? I’m just sayin’, this part of the mountain is really good for dumping bodies. Just kidding, the creepy music was just to indicate that Feli was on the verge of fainting dead away. Which she does. Frosted Tips is all, “Well, this is weird.”

When Feli comes to, Frosted Tips takes her down to the lake and sells her to sit and chill a bit. He introduces himself as Patrizio, which we knew because we’ve already met him. Feli weirdly says “Pato” like she’s correcting him on his own damn name. He offers to walk her back to the hotel.

Meanwhile, Tomás doesn’t want to go on another triple date and fuck things up with Pilar again. Guido and Francisco are all, “We’re in Bariloche! What happens in Bariloche stays in Bariloche!” Okay, I guess I can see how this is a party town, except for the freezing weather and the complete lack of any clubs or casinos that we’ve seen so far. Whatever. Tomás is like, “What if the girls don’t even like me?” and Francisco WEIRDLY says, “We have the key to their room! Come on, it’s Bariloche!” Didn’t he steal that key from the front desk? It’s not like they gave it to you as a sign that they were into you!!!

It’s a total race to the bottom in the case of which of the boys is the worst, but I think for sheer misogyny and actual rapey behavior, Francisco is winning. Guido is a close second. Marcos, Manuel, and Tomás are trash bags in their relationships, but aren’t much more than bad boyfriends on the whole.

Tomás is peer pressured into agreeing to go, but he’s like, “But don’t make me cheat on Pilar!” What? Tomás, that’s your own damn responsibility.

In the girls’ room, Lujan is opting to stay in instead of heading out with everyone. The new style of braids they’re trying looks very cute on her, by the way. She tells Laura that she met some super cute guy online, so she’s going to stay behind and see where that goes. Laura’s like, “Oh good, so…you and Marcos, that’s officially over?” Lujan’s like, “Look, I know you’re dating, and I’m SUPER HAPPY for you and EVERYTHING’S FINE.” Laura is happy and runs off, and Lujan goes back to being emo.

Martavio is still worried about Feli, but just then she borrows Pato’s phone and calls the hotel. She assures Martavio that everything’s fine and she’s coming back to the hotel now. OR IS SHE? Did Sol tell Pato to lead Feli astray? Dang, I should probably pay more attention to her scenes 🙁 Some of these kids are really boring, okay! I get distracted! Anyway, Martavio lectures her on wandering off and hooking up with some rando in the woods, and Feli starts wailing that Sol ditched her and left her to die of exposure. Martavio’s like, “Okay, whatever, I don’t really have time for this. Just come back to the hotel and I’ll ignore your obvious falsehoods.” Wow, he’s really in the running for worst teacher ever, isn’t he? To be fair, he has a lot of competition at Elite Way, so he really has to step his game up. Pato takes the phone from Feli and asks Martavio’s permission to take her out tonight. Martavio gives it, because he’s not a regular teacher, he’s a cool teacher.

All the kids who haven’t gotten Martavio’s permission to totally blow off their group activities have to go hang out on a boat. The boat is called the “Modesta Victoria”, and Vico and Rocco cutely banter that the name is just like her. All the kids are cute and coupley, except then Tomás fucks it up by faking stomach pains so he can ditch Pilar. I take back any compliments I’ve given you over the past couple of episodes. I TRUSTED YOU, DAMMIT. But then Pilar feels bad for letting Tomás go off alone and in pain, and decides to go after him. Marcos and Laura are like, “Whatever, you do you,” and go back to making out.

Sol evils to Fernanda that Pato meeting up with Feli is all part of her master plan. Fernanda’s like, “Why didn’t you mention that earlier?” and Sol’s like, “Because then this plot would’ve been at least ten minutes shorter.” She cackles that Feli won’t have a second of rest on this vacation. Then Pilar shows up, asking after Tomás. Sol and Fernanda say that they haven’t seen him — but hey, they’re going to the boardwalk, does Pilar want to come? Whoa, what are the odds that Tomás is also going there?

Cut to: Tomás, Guido, and Francisco hitching a ride to meet the girls at the boardwalk. There’s a bunch of tables set up and it’s kind of a farmers’ market-pier combo. They meet up with the not-naked girls and the girls tell them that they have booze in their room. The boys are all twitterpated at the idea of drinking with them. Sol, Pilar, and Fernanda rock up, and Sol tells Pilar that they’re going to meet lots of cute boys at the boardwalk. You know how those cute boys love farmers’ markets. Pilar insists that she won’t be looking at any other guys, because she’s with Tomás, and Sol’s like, “Yeah…you might wanna look over there.” Pilar sees Tomás hitting on one of the not-naked girls.

Over at the Erreway concert, the hall is packed, and the show is about to start…and Mia starts crying that she can’t do it. Marizza’s like, “Awkward.”

RIP Tiempo, you were gone too soon.

Hee. You are right, there were a lot of changes. I wonder what was behind that.

I see Dunoff’s douchey attitude is really rubbing off on him.
Hahaha Martavio really is awful — I’ve lost one student, let me see how many more I can lose! Yeah, what was the point of him talking up the hotel? I get how it was the obnoxious attitude characters do sometimes on TV, but you’re right. It would lead to no results… Except make Dunoff think that Martavio knows what he’s doing perhaps. Cause Dunoff truly cares.

Marcos and Laura are so dull together.

If I had a Guido-free week, I would be relaxing in my bathtub with a glass of wine and a selection of fine books. I might also use that time to find a new boyfriend.

Hahahahaha that’s so funny and yea! The boys are so gross. So so gross. Run Pilar. I’d wish you’d run.

    Thank you for the summary!
