Rebelde Way 2×043: Stick to the Status Quo

Previously on Rebelde Way: Tomás talked Sol who talked Francisco into stealing back Pablo’s demos from Marizza. But did he actually? We don’t find out, because the cold open leaves us on another cliffhanger. Show, that’s not how cliffhangers work.

Instead, we cut over to Papa C walking in on Sonia’s modeling workshop, and finding out that it is not at all a home ec class like he thought. I feel like he brought this on himself for believing that Sonia’s capable of teaching home ec. She probably burns toast. Anyway, Sonia BSes that learning to walk is an important part of being ladylike, which is an important part of home ec, ergo this is totally part of the curriculum. Papa C is, of course, left sputtering in the face of this impeccable logic. He pulls Mia out of the class, and of course everyone’s like, “What a meanie!”

I’m gonna back up a little and clarify: I fully believe modeling is a legit job, and I know models work very hard and often for very little compensation. I want to be clear that I don’t think models are bad people or that they’re to blame for like, the entire patriarchy. I am critical of the modeling industry and how it’s promoted to young women. Girls are taught from a young age that our worth is tied up in how we look, and more specifically whether or not we look and act sexually available to men, and the writing of this show does nothing to reject that message. I find it really irritating that Sonia spends so much time teaching the girls how to be “sexy”, and that Papa C’s always painted as being wrong for criticizing her.

Naturally, Francisco didn’t copy Pablo’s demos at all, and there’s just a bunch of stock classical music on the tape. “It — it can’t be,” poor dumb Tomás wails, even though he can fully hear the music coming out of the cassette player. In the cafeteria, Francisco and Marizza cackle over successfully tricking Tomás. Okay, first of all: it’s not hard to trick Tomás. Second of all, those are Pablo’s demos. They’re not Marizza’s! She stole them! Francisco snarks that they deserve to be tricked, for sending Sol to hit on him. He didn’t fall for her act at all. Then Diego comes in and announces that he’s booked the Parque de la Costa for New Erreway’s concert. (Coincidentally, there was a real Erreway concert there, which I think they used the footage of as the in-show concert). Everything is coming up Marizza!

Their buzz is harshed by Dunoff, who’s gathered everyone to tell them that the parent-student workshop has been canceled, but that doesn’t mean they’re off the hook for the Erreway concert. Manuel’s like, “Uh, what concert?…Fine, how did you find out?” Everyone looks at Pilar, who’s like, “I didn’t say anything!”

New Erreway blames Laura for bringing Pilar into the fold; Laura and Lujan both insist Pilar’s changed. Aw! Lujan cares! Marizza snaps that Pilar’s proven too many times that she hasn’t changed, which is…actually true, just not in this situation. I don’t even know what Pilar’s doing with her life at this point. Speaking of whom, she rocks up to the group asking what they’re gonna do, and everyone is super awkward about telling her that they all hate her now.

As for what they’re going to do, it looks like they’re just…going to barrel on full steam ahead and hope it works out? That’s what I’m getting. Once again, it would make much more sense to just postpone the concert to later date that doesn’t conflict with anything, but Marizza refuses. It’s hard to have sympathy when the solution is right there staring these kids in the face.

Night falls, and Gloria’s all excited to get a cab and finally leave her prison at Elite Way. Unfortunately, she makes the mistake of mentioning to Dunoff that someone cut the phone lines, and Dunoff’s like, “I bet it was the fourth year students,” and Gloria’s all like, “OMG, do you think so?!” Like damn, keep up, Gloria. It finally dawns on Dunoff that they stole his cell phone, and he’s like, “Gloria, stay! We have some punishing to do!” “It’s…it’s nighttime,” poor Gloria says. He can’t make you work off the clock, Gloria! Fight for your labor rights!

Pilar’s all salty that everyone blames her for Dunoff finding out about the concert. Lujan chases after her, and Pilar cries to her that she’s sick of being everyone’s scapegoat. She doesn’t even know who really did it, so she can’t help, and nobody will ever believe her. I mean, I’d feel worse if Pilar didn’t relapse into her old ways two minutes after changing every time.

Meanwhile, Mia’s whining about being dragged off to France by Papa C. Manuel gently points out that if she wants to be treated like an adult, maybe she should start acting like one. Mia’s like, “Does that mean you expect me to put out?” and Manuel’s like, “No (except yes).” What a weird direction for the conversation to go in. Laura drags Manuel off to go to New Erreway rehearsal, and Sonia rocks up to comfort Mia. She actually has some nice words to say about Papa C, pointing out that he loves Mia and would do anything for her; he just has weird ideas about what it is to be a teenage girl. Mia cries that she’s the reason her parents broke up, because they couldn’t handle having a kid. Aw, Mia! Sonia comforts her and is generally very sweet. (She also, sadly, says that she has to make some final calls for Marizza’s show, although Marizza doesn’t want Sonia’s help. Damn, Marizza, your mom is helping you throw a gigantic concert! Be a little grateful!) Their nice little moment is interrupted by Gloria, who is running around looking for Dunoff’s phone. Mia realizes that if Gloria pokes any further around the school, she’s gonna come across New Erreway rehearsing.

Pablo confronts Marizza about stealing his music and performing under the name Erreway, and she’s like, “Well, you guys were gonna perform as Erreway without me!” I mean…yeah, Marizza, that’s what happens when you leave the band. Marizza’s grasp on the concept of intellectual property is not great. Pablo threatens to get her in trouble, and Marizza mocks him all, “What, are you gonna call your dad? You know what, Pablo? You’re a loser.” Sick burn! She should’ve made an L with her fingers, for effect.

All the girls still blame Pilar for being a snitch. Pilar’s like, “I’m not a snitch!” for the eightieth time, which of course only makes it rich when Blas and Gloria bang into her room and say they know someone stole Dunoff’s phone.

New Erreway, meanwhile, has run into another problem: Vico and Manuel have both jumped ship to New Erreway, so now they have five members. And as we know, THERE CAN ONLY BE FOUR. Vico immediately volunteers to leave, and Rocco’s like, “No way!” because he liiiikes her. And also because Victoria Maurette is the only one who can actually sing.

Mia comes in and tells them they have to clear out, as Dunoff is searching the building. “We can’t stop rehearsing!” Manuel bleats, and the rest of New Erreway agrees. Dudes! You can’t hold off rehearsal for five minutes and hide? Their priorities are so out of whack. Marizza confesses that she was the one that stole the phone, and even Sonia thinks that’s stupid. “Why does it always have to be you?!” she hisses. Hee! Still, she distracts Dunoff while Marizza sneaks into her room and looks for the phone, but she can’t find it.

Over in Pablo’s room, there’s a war brewin’ between Tomás and Guido. Guido thinks Tomás is dumb to let Sol jerk him around by the penis — man, when Guido thinks you should stop thinking with the little head, you’ve really fucked up — but Tomás is all, “Sol has never done anything wrong, ever!” Pablo and Guido just don’t understand their love! He storms out, and Pablo’s all emo over Erreway breaking up, and Guido’s like, “Why don’t you just suck it up and join Marizza’s band?” Yeah, why don’t we all just give Marizza what she wants even though she stole Pablo’s songs and refuses to reschedule her concert and make life easier on everyone? Why doesn’t she just volunteer with poor people instead of throwing a giant concert? I swear.

Why does Tomás have a bike helmet on his head? I really do not know.

Anyway, Pilar stole Dunoff’s phone out of Marizza’s room so he won’t know Marizza took it, ergo, she is back in Marizza’s good books. The rest of New Erreway — who, panning across them, is like half the class, Jesus — is kind of like, “Eh, okay, if you say so.”

Back in his office, Dunoff finds his phone in his whiskey cabinet and he’s like, “What the hell?” Gloria delicately suggests that maybe drinking on the job is impairing his memory, and he’s like, “I can drink whenever I want!” In fairness, it’s not like being drunk could make him any worse at his job. He pours himself a drink, and the second he takes a sip, he hears Sonia crying outside. “I’m hearing things,” he says, but no, it’s for real. Again, I can’t really fault him here. I too would need alcohol to deal with Sonia. Especially since the reason for her tears, she tells him, is that she doesn’t know if Marizza is Spirito’s daughter…or Dunoff’s. OH SNAP!

Man, if Marizza and Pilar were half-sisters, that would be amazing. I’d watch that show.

Sonia takes Dunoff to Martavio’s nightclub, because that’s the best place to talk about your serious paternity issues. She wants him to see Martavio perform and maybe talk to him and his “brother” about the struggle of having no dad or whatever — but little does she know that Martavio is sitting, disguised, at the table right next to him! Wait, why is he doing that? Is he on a date? If a guy showed up on a date with me wearing a hat like that, I would not be able to stop laughing. Anyway, Dunoff’s babbling all loudly about how CRAZY IT IS THAT SONIA THINKS MARIZZA IS HIS DAUGHTER and Martavio’s like, “Say what?” Like a dick, he kicks his date out of the club so he can eavesdrop better, and hear Dunoff sputter that he wants a paternity test. If Marizza really is his daughter, he’ll claim her. Oh, man, of all the times for Dunoff to not be a cowardly custard. Sonia’s like, “No, wait, you really don’t have to do that,” but Dunoff says, “I’m a gentleman!” HA!

New Erreway is still fighting over who will or won’t sing, and honestly I couldn’t really follow it at all, because at first it looked like they had too many members, but then they decided Vico would sing solo and they would just back her up (once again defeating the point of having four members), and then Belen didn’t want to, so Mia volunteered, so now they’re just back to being original Erreway minus Pablo and possibly plus Vico and everyone else in that room. I don’t even know. Who cares? I already know they’re going to rope Pablo back in somehow and everyone in that group who thought they were going to be in Erreway will have their dreams crushed. Let’s move on.

We barely knew ye, Diego.

Francisco goes off to do the noble but futile work of trying to get Tomás out of Sol’s clutches. Tomás flips out at him and says he’s tired of everyone trying to fight him and Sol’s love — bizarrely, a scare chord goes off when Tomás notices Ana listening to them. Please, like Ana gives a shit anymore. Sol rocks up and sweet-talks Tomás into doing her homework for her, and Francisco and Ana are both like, “This is the saddest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.” Francisco/Ana for judgmental class couple of the year!

Sonia goes to Papa C and tells him about Mia’s emotional problems. Papa C’s genuinely touched by Sonia reaching out to him, and they manage to behave like functioning adults for .5 seconds. Then Sonia’s like, “Hey, maybe it would help if you told Mia her mom’s actually alive,” and Papa C’s like, “Well, that’s just the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard! Leave my house, scarlet woman!”

New Erreway needs equipment for their show, and for some reason they decide to go to Pablo for help. If I were Pablo, I would tell them to fuck all the way off for a) stealing my songs and b) refusing to reschedule a charity show to play a party so I could earn money after my abusive dad cut me off, but Pablo agrees to find gear for them, as his own is too small for a venue as large as Parque de la Costa. Uh, did he not use that gear for the frickin’ Gran Rex? Why am I expecting this show to make sense? Anyway, Pablo says he has a friend who can get them the equipment. Is this friend Facundo? Get your own life, Facundo! There is one condition, though. “Of course there is,” Marizza snipes. Both Manuel and Mia tell her to shut up. Hee. I love how they know Marizza is blowing this for them. Pablo’s condition is that they kick Diego out, and replace him with Pablo, and make New Erreway just regular Erreway all over again, and end up exactly where they started. Marizza refuses to let him rejoin, and Pablo’s like, “Kay, enjoy having no equipment then,” and waltzes on out.

No, I don’t know what’s going on with the back of Marizza’s jacket.

Mia and Manuel are like, “Marizza, what the hell!”, and Marizza snaps at them that she can’t just kick Diego out after he’s been so helpful. Oh. That’s a surprisingly non-selfish reason. But I mean, he’s just a tertiary character, Marizza! He’ll get over it and pop up again whenever you need him!

Speaking of dumbass characters who will do whatever other characters need them to, Sol is still leading Tomás around by the penis. He does her homework for her, and he’s like, “So do I get to go to second base now?” and she’s like, “Nope! Thanks for the homework! Bye!” Oh, and it looks like Tomás is still leading Ana around by…her low self-esteem, I guess, as she’s done his book report on the Iliad for him. He runs off to thank her, and Pablo and Guido walk in on them hugging. Ana blusters that she didn’t do Tomás’s homework because she likes him, she’s doing his homework as a side job because she needs extra money. Pablo and Guido are like, “Wow, great idea! Let’s pawn our homework off onto you too!” Ana agrees, although in fairness, she might as well if she’s getting paid. But then Guido reminds Pablo that they’re broke, and Pablo’s like, “Oh yeah.”

Marizza tells Diego that Pablo wants to rejoin New Erreway, and like, she feels real bad about it, but…they do kind of need his equipment and all, so…sucks to be Diego. In total fairness, she doesn’t insist on kicking him out; Diego gets all salty and volunteers to leave. It’s like Nixon resigning instead of getting impeached.

Meanwhile: “YOU HAD A THING WITH DUNOFF?!” Hilda shrieks. Hee! Oh, man, that is amazing. To her credit, she looks as disgusted as we all should be by the idea of sleeping with Dunoff. Sonia tells her that she’s pretty sure Dunoff’s not the father, but she was just trying to distract him from punishing Marizza. Still, it would be helpful if she could be certain that the paternity test says Spirito is the father, and it would be especially helpful if someone helped her out in her zany scheme, if Hilda gets her drift. “Oh, Sonia, when are you going to grow up?” Hilda asks. Oh, Hilda. I’ve been wondering that from day one. Sonia blusters that she never learned how to be a mom, since her own mom was not exactly great. What she needs is an authority figure, someone who could teach her to discipline Marizza. Hilda’s like, “Ooh, do you need someone to teach you to be mean to children? Pick me, pick me!”

Blas looks…really different. Oh my god, he got rid of the creepy goatee? When did this happen?

Anyway, he’s watching the class for whatever reason, while Marizza tries to get Pablo’s attention. She tells him that they’ll replace Diego with him, and Pablo does his victory lap: “Who’s the loser now? Eh?” he asks, poking Marizza’s face with his pencil. Heh. It’s actually bizarrely cute, in the way Pablo and Marizza so often are. “Ugh, can I go to the bathroom? I’m gonna throw up,” Marizza tells Blas. But then Carmen sweeps in to start her class, and announces that as Pablo’s tutor, she’s giving him a pop quiz to see how War and Peace is going for him. Oral exam in front of the class! “I’m not going to throw up anymore,” Marizza chirps. Hee.

Martavio tells Sonia that he heard from his “brother” that she showed up at his nightclub, and she was with Dunoff, and they were talking about some very interesting things. He would love to tell Sonia more, but he has to get to class now. Sonia sweatdrops.

After class, everyone gathers in the main hall. Rocco weaves in and out of the crowd, announcing that everyone’s super hype for the concert tonight. Tonight? Man, what kind of last-minute planning was going on in this episode? So I guess everyone’s just waiting to send Erreway off, and I’m sure this huge gathering won’t arouse suspicion at all. Rocco zeroes on in Vico, as he does, and she confesses that she’s nervous about singing, to which he cutely reassures her. I love them, you guys 🙁

Anyway, the massive group of old and new Erreway gets ready to leave…and they run right into Dunoff. Pilar rescues them by faking an injury, so I guess she’s back in their good graces until they turn on her again. Everyone hauls out of there, and they’re almost to the venue when the bus driver says they can’t go any further. Erreway looks out the window and are SHOCKED by whatever’s out there. I swear, if it’s a sea of fans for this band that their own parents don’t even know about, I’m…not going to be surprised at all, but I will be salty about it.
