Opening monologue: You might have thought that you have all the answers, but you don’t. And you probably aren’t gonna learn them at Elite Way.
So Papa B has found out about the existence of Erreway, but not who’s in it yet. He enlisted Dunoff to find out, and Dunoff promptly passes the responsibility onto Pablo. Heh. I like how Dunoff thinks he can just grab a random kid and he’ll know everything that his classmates are up to. Dunoff’s like, “Don’t make me tell your dad that you’ve failed him.” Pablo’s like, “Yikes,” and agrees to do it. Oh, and Dunoff wants the names by tomorrow. No pressure!
For some horrific reason, Mia is in the teacher’s lounge with Blas. He brings up that Papa C’s renting a house to Manuel, and Mia’s like, “He’s not going back to Mexico? OMG! :D” Blas is like, “That was not the reaction I was looking for.” Mia’s like, “No, I’m horrified! So horrified that I have to leave immediately!” Good! Get away from Blas, Mia!
Speaking of Manuel, he’s at Casa Colucci. He tells Papa C that he has to go back to Mexico, and Papa C blathers on about how Manuel has a bright future with Company Colucci, whatever the F it’s called, and how he shouldn’t turn it down just because he has like, family and friends and a life back in Mexico. This reminds me, is Manuel even in Argentina legally anymore? (You don’t need a visa to go there from Mexico, but it looks like you do if you stay more than 30 days. I’d assume Manuel needs a visa to attend school as well, but he’s at Elite Way, where background checks are unheard of, so I’ll give him a pass there.) Manuel BSes that he hasn’t gotten along too well in Argentina, and Papa C’s like, “You rolled into this country and immediately got into a prestigious school, ingratiated yourself to a powerful businessman, hooked up with half the girls in your grade, and became a teen pop star. What more do you want?” He gets all emotional about how he loves Manuel like a son, and Manuel’s like, “Yeah…no can do.” Then Mia calls, demanding that Papa C come to school. When was the last time she showed up to her own house?
Back at school, Marizza is demanding to Pepa that Sonia call her. “She knows why I want to talk to her!” Parallels, do you see them? Tomás and Guido run up to her, trying to convince her to go somewhere with them. “I’m not going anywhere with you,” Marizza says. Good for her. I would never go to a second location with Guido. Tomás, maybe, if only because I feel like I could outwit him and escape. Anyway, Pablo shows up, and Guido and Tomás tell him that they were asking Marizza to go to the place. “You know…the place?” Sometimes, I can’t believe these two can string sentences together. Pablo says they have to see someone about the lighting for the concert, but Marizza’s like, “Nah man.” She also asks Pablo why Dunoff wanted to talk to him, and Pablo blows her off with an excuse. Marizza is suspicious.
Random musical interlude of Gloria on a date with Popeye (the male hooker, you’ll recall). Hilda sees them together and gets all mad. Shouldn’t she be happy that Gloria’s stepping off Hilario? Anyway, it cracks me up that it never occurred to anyone in on this plan that Hilda might just see Gloria dating this other guy in the place where they both work.
Etchamendi is pissed at Dunoff for making it sound like Mansilla was going to leave. Dunoff’s like, “But Mansilla was going to leave!” and Etchamendi’s like, “Unless you quell the ~rebeldía~ in third year, you can’t sit with us.” Dunoff assures him that everything will be fixed. I bet it won’t. Pilar comes in and Dunoff rants to her about everything on his plate — Etchamendi, Mansilla, that stupid rock band…Pilar’s like, “Rock band? Tell me more!” What is with everyone calling Erreway a rock band? Avril Lavigne is edgier than them. Pilar gets a Look on her face and tells Dunoff that she doesn’t know anything, but if she’ll keep an eye out.
I don’t know if it’s the lighting or the video, but everyone looks hella orange in this scene.
Sonia and Papa C show up at Elite Way. Bickering ensues, they put their faces way too close together as usual, blah blah blah. Peter rolls up and reveals he’s working for Sonia once more, and he’s all snippy with Papa C. Whatever, Peter was always useless. Sonia goes to see Marizza, and Marizza starts reaming her out for investigating Simon. “Do you want me to investigate how old you are?” she asks. Hee. Sonia tries to tell Marizza that Simon is shady, but Marizza’s not having it. When Pablo comes in and tells her that they have to meet with the light guy, she accepts.
Papa C tells Mia that Manuel’s leaving anyway. Mia sighs that it’s understandable — Mexico is where his family is, where his dad is buried…and hey, does Papa C know anything about Papa Aguirre’s death? Papa C says that Papa Aguirre committed suicide, and Mia feels bad for Manuel. Oh. That was anticlimactic. I was at least expecting Papa C to like, remember that he had business with the guy.
Pablo, Guido, and Tomás take Marizza to Simon’s house and show her that he’s married. The whole situation is pretty sketch, but the woman never actually says that she’s Simon’s wife, and Marizza storms off. Then the woman brings out a baby and is like, “And this is our son, Simon Jr!” Oh. Marizza really ought to have seen this part.
Peter is all snippy with Papa C because he thinks Papa C has found another chauffeur, and replaced Peter in his job and his heart. Papa C’s like, “What you talking about?” and Peter’s like, “Sonia told me –” “Oh, Sonia told you.” I wonder if anyone — even for a moment — considered that lying to someone she supposedly cares about, just to spite Papa C, kinda makes Sonia an asshole. I bet nobody did. Anyway, they confront Sonia and she grudgingly lets Peter go back to his old job.
Mia tells Vico what she’s learned about Manuel — way to not keep it a secret, Mia — and emos that his life has been soooo hard. Seriously, did she just…forget that Blas has already told her? Vico’s like, “You guys aren’t even dating anymore,” because…that somehow means Mia can’t feel empathy for the guy? Vico points out that Papa C just confirmed what Blas already told her — oh my God, so Mia does know, and she just…didn’t feel bad the first time? WHAT IS HAPPENING? Vico tells Mia that she has to find out the truth. Aw, yis. Bring Girl Detective Mia back!
“Let me be your Robin!”
Dunoff tries to ask Sonia about Erreway, like he’s expecting her to ever tell the truth about anything. As usual, she hits on him enough to distract him, then is saved from his inquires by Marizza. Marizza’s not pleased to hear that Dunoff is onto them, and even less pleased about this whole Simon-has-a-wife thing. Sonia’s like, “Say what?”
Also, I thought this was already resolved, but Mia and Marizza aren’t going to swap houses anymore. Which is sad, because I thought that might be genuinely funny, which is not something the show has going for itself usually.
Lujan’s like, “Hey, my tutor hasn’t written me in a while,” and Marcos is like, “Maybe you should write him,” and Lujan’s like, “Okay, I’ll do that.” Thrilling stuff.
Mama Provenza shows up at school to talk to Nico and be a dick to Luna, as usual. She passive-aggressively tells Nico that she won’t go on the trip to San Clemente if Luna comes with them, and she hopes they have LOTS OF FUN without her, and if something were EVER to happen to her (GOD FORBID), well, her sisters can take care of her, since HER SON won’t be there. And if he needs anything, his cousins will be there for him, since his mother can’t be! Man, this is a hell of a guilt trip. But honestly, I totally forgot Nico’s mom still hardcore hates Luna. Didn’t it occur to Nico that it would be awkward to bring her along on the trip?
For some reason, Sonia tries to say hi to Mama Provenza as she leaves. What, did these two ever hang out? Anyway, then Pablo comes back and Sonia’s like, “YOU, ME, THE DIRT ON SIMON. NOW.” Pablo’s like, “He’s not just married, he has a baby. If he and Marizza stay together, you’ll automatically be a grandmother.” Sonia freaks the fuck out, as is her wont.
Blas creepily stares at Mia while she studies, and eventually she’s like, “Why are you looking at me?” “Because I’m a perv who should be in jail,” he doesn’t say. Mia asks him for the dirt on Manuel, and he promises to bring her the proof tomorrow.
Marizza’s emoing to one of her posters about how hard her life is, when Pilar pops in. Pilar, God love her, is here to stir shit: she tells Marizza that Pablo is going to tattle about the band to Dunoff. Marizza runs off to tell the band, and is like, “I know it’s true because Pilar told me!” Everyone’s like, “…so…it’s not true, then.” Heh. Marizza points out that Pilar was right about Mansilla. “She’s changed!” she says. You know, I don’t think Pilar’s ever actually made anything up wholesale; she just reports what she hears. If she does lie, it’s generally by omission.
Gloria’s all twitterpated about her new romance. Oh, this will end well.
Sonia comes by to see Pablo. It’s implied that it’s the next day, which is weird, since they usually show that exterior shot of the school to indicate that the days are changing. Well, whatever. She tells him she’s all worried now about Simon being married and having a kid, and offers to work together to take him down. Pablo’s like, “Aw, yis.”
Dunoff comes in for another day of sucking up to Etchamendi, but Gloria tells him that he’s already talking to Renata. Renata’s trying to get Etchamendi to reinstate Mansilla, but Etchamendi’s like, “I know you haven’t been here for most of the show, but we hate him.” He tells her that they’ve already found a replacement: Renata’s boyfriend! Renata’s like, “I’m kind of emotionally cheating on him with Mansilla, so…” Etchamendi chirps that it’ll be an awesome solution (and it sounds like he’s gunning to bump Dunoff off as principal; I didn’t catch all of it), and Renata runs off. Etchamendi flips through the newspaper and he’s like, “Uh, Dunoff, why do you have an ad for a male escort circled? Is there something you wanna tell me?” HEE.
Manuel, Nico, and Marizza ponder over what to do about Pablo. Manuel, oddly enough, is the reasonable one — he’s like, “Let’s just go to Pablo and talk it out.” Marizza’s like, “He’s a traitor! We must execute him at dawn!” Then Mansilla rocks in, and they all get up and go to the classroom. Wow, it’s really bad when these kids willingly go to class. They meet up with Pablo and ask about the Dunoff situation. He has just enough time to tell them that it’s true, and then Gloria drags him off before he can explain further.
Mansilla comes in to teach, and everyone’s really pissy and passive-aggressive with him. Even Marcos! What the hell, Marcos! He’s all nasty that Mansilla’s just staying to get more money. Mansilla doesn’t point out that even if he is resigning, he’s contracted through the end of the school year, because that’s how teaching works. Then he’s like, “Whatever, if you don’t want to have class, you can leave. You’re not obligated to stay.” Uh…yes, they are, Mansilla. I mean, I’ve heard other countries don’t enforce students leaving the classroom as strictly as the US, but I don’t think they can just cancel class when they feel like it. Only Luna stays, because she realizes that teachers resign all the damn time and it’s not that big of a deal.
Sonia and Nacho hide behind a tree to spy on Simon’s house. Not obvious at all! It’s funny to me that no one on this show ever considers, like, sitting in a parked car on the street. It’s like they’ve never seen a spy movie in their life. Anyway, they conveniently see Simon and his wife step outside with their baby, and watch Simon kiss her goodbye and walk off with the kid.
Mia’s walking with the rest of Erreway, minus Pablo, when Blas rocks up with his receipts on Manuel. Everyone’s pissy about her talking to him, but Mia waves them off. “What’s this?” she asks Blas. The…thing that you guys were just talking about yesterday? Come on, Mia.
Hilario rolls into the office, still rocking his shirt-unbuttoned-down-to-his-navel look. Ick. He runs into Hilda, and she reluctantly tells him that Gloria’s cheating on him. Hilario fakes shock, and Hilda feels bad enough to hug him. Fucking Hilario.
Simon takes his son to a carousel, because he’s a family man when he’s not perving on high school girls. The carousel goes around and brings Sonia right in front of Simon. Hee! She asks if that kid is Simon’s son, and he confirms. But he’s totally not married; his thing with the kid’s mom was never serious, and she just calls herself his wife when people call about him, because…it makes more sense, apparently. Look, I don’t know. Sonia’s like, “Man, this is way too much baggage to be bringing to a relationship with a 15-year-old. You better talk to Marizza.”
One thing I’ve noticed is that generally they’ll only have a shot showing everyone in the scene at the very start of it, then they’ll just go back and forth between close-ups of the talking characters’ faces until they cut to the next scene. They don’t do that here, probably to show off the cute toddler.
Pablo comes into the cafeteria, and the band immediately crowds him about whether or not he told Dunoff their names. “I gave him what he asked for,” he says. Marizza knees him in the groin (heh) and stomps out. For some reason, Pablo decides to be passive-aggressive and not tell the rest of the band if he ratted them out or not. Sure, that will make everyone involved happy.
Hilda advises Gloria to think before she dates an older guy again; Gloria is confused but accepts her advice. I guess that’s the end of that, since Hilda doesn’t seem to be upset. Then Dunoff comes in with the classifieds, and he’s like, “Hilda, I know being old and single is rough, but like…is there something you wanna tell me?” Hilda freaks out at being accused of hiring a hooker, as she should be. When Gloria comes back, Dunoff shows her the ad and is like, “Years of celibacy have driven Hilda crazy!”
See, a day or two is meant to have gone by, but Gloria’s still wearing the same clothes. Take a shower, Gloria!
Mia opens up the file Blas gave her and begins to read. She starts having flashbacks of the good times of Manuel (but oddly, none of the times he flipped out on her over tiny things like talking once to his mom or honestly telling Blas that they were dating), set to “Amor de engaño”, of course. It occurs to me that Mia and Manuel have two songs (“Amor de engaño” for when their relationship is sad, and “Te soñé” when it’s happy), but I think Marizza and Pablo only have “Dos segundos”, right? Anyway, Mia gets to the end of the file and starts crying. Wow, she read that fast. It looks like it’s all single-spaced!
Lujan is still worrying about her tutor’s radio silence, so she and Marcos decide to go to Gloria and find out if he’s talked to the school and enrolled her for the next year. Gloria says she doesn’t know, but registration starts the next day, so they’ll find out soon.
Mia goes back to Casa Colucci in tears, and tells Papa C that Papa Aguirre’s death was his fault. And she brought the papers with her! Sorry, I got excited over that bit of planning ahead. I was half-expecting her to forget them and there’d be a whole thing about how she didn’t have any proof, blah blah blah.
Dunoff comes into class and lectures them on how rock is the devil’s music and you can hear Satan if you play “Stairway to Heaven” backwards. He has a bit about how rock musicians are all filthy drug addicts, so it’s probably for the best that Mia’s not here to hear this. Then he’s like, “I will now read off the names of the band members, who are going to get expelled, and who are most definitely our protagonists! Suspense!” Yeah, whatever, there’s no suspense.
