Rebelde Way 1×062: The Truth is Out There

The opening monologue is back! To find the truth, we have to go out into the wide world and be ~rebelde. Pretty appropriate for once! This episode does actually have something of a running theme re: the truth, and being brave enough to find it out. Not bad for this show.

Mia has stormed into Papa C’s office to ask him if it’s true that Mama C was a drug addict/skanky groupie/alcoholic. It’s not a hard question, but Papa C’s all like, “Oh…well…you know that is an interesting question. And we are looking into it.” Mia wails that he should just tell her if Mama C was a “rock and roll druggie.” Heh. Papa C asks where Mia’s got this idea from, which would be an excellent time for Mia to throw Mercedes under the bus, but she doesn’t. He tells her Mama C wrote songs and sang for bands; she wasn’t a groupie. (“They’re sl*ts, they sleep with the band!”) And she never drank or did drugs, ever! She was pure as the driven snow! Okay, Papa C. Peter’s like, “This is beautiful,” over the corner. Heh. Finally Mia says that Mercedes told her Mama C was a total band skank, and Papa C’s like, “NO WAY.”

Lounge. Luna, showing something of a backbone for once, is pissed that Nico didn’t believe her about Matías. Bizarrely, Lujan takes Nico’s side, and says Luna should trust Nico to…forgive her, I guess? What has happened to Lujan? Why isn’t she threatening to storm off and kick Nico’s ass? I have so many questions. Blas comes up to them looking for Mia (ick) and Lujan and Luna haul off to their room because they know he’s creepy. A few feet away, Manuel overhears this exchange and convinces Julieta to go away so he can mess with Blas. He’s like, “Oh hey Blas, I just came back from spending two whole days at Mia’s house. I might know where she’s at, if you asked nicely.” Blas is all like, “Mia’s hanging out with someone age-appropriate? THE HORROR.”

Marcos gets a new letter from “Marizza” where she prattles on about how much she likes the real Marcos and how cute he is, blah blah blah. Marcos is all twitterpated and leans back against his Neon Genesis Evangelion poster with a happy sigh. HEE!

Pablo’s room. He and Tomás are fretting over how to please their older lovahs (slow down, Tomás, Lulu took you out on one sympathy walk), and Guido’s like, “Oooh, let’s watch porn together! That’s not weird at all!” Is anyone surprised frickin’ Guido is a porn user? They’re all like, “Brilliant idea! Watching a woman fake an orgasm after being coerced into performing sex will totally teach us how to please our girlfriends!” There’s a “wacky” montage where they go to a video store, talk some guy into buying porn tapes for them, and hustle out with like fifty videos. (Including a Roman Polanski film, which introduces so many horrible jokes I’m not going to make.) I’m going to be serious for a second and say that I think porn is legitimately gross, so I’m not amused by this at all. The only actually funny part is that they’re buying it on VHS. 2002!

Vico finds Pilar in the lounge and tries to give her a stuffed bear. Pilar’s all like, “It’s too late to apologize!” (IT’S TOO LAAAAATE~) Then Joaquin rocks up and puts his arm around Pilar. Vico’s all horrified and calls Pilar a traitor. I mean…to common sense and good taste, sure, but to Vico? Not really. Joaquin and Pilar waltz off and Vico cries.

Julieta and Manuel make out behind some pillar (I almost wrote Pilar) when Blas and Mia walk in. Where did they walk in from? I have no idea. They fall all over each other and Manuel gets all obnoxious and jealous. Julieta storms off, and Manuel overhears Blas and Mia make plans to hang out over the weekend (ick). Blas wants to come to Mia’s house (ICK!), but she convinces him to go out instead. STILL ICK!

My feelings exactly, Manuel.

He follows Mia to her room to try and control her social life again, but Vico comes in crying and he stops to ask if she’s okay. Aw. For all she’s done, it is nice to see someone caring about Vico after Mia and Feli keep snarking on her, and Manuel is always better to watch when he’s not being a creep. Vico, too, tries to play off like she’s fine instead of manipulating his attention. Manuel tells her that if she sees Mia, to tell her not to leave the school.

Etchamendi (remember him? Important member of the school board? Basically owns Elite Way? I know, me either) calls Dunoff and tells him not to kick Joaquin out of school. Dunoff’s like, “But my daughter’s besmirched honor!!!” Etchamendi browbeats him into letting Joaquin stay, which Pilar is all happy about. Dunoff tells her that Joaquin’s only staying because of his Very Important Uncle’s influence with the board, and Pilar is forbidden to go out with him. Pilar’s like, “Well, what if I do? What if I’m REBELDE?” Dunoff’s like, “Then you can go to public school.” A fate worse than death!

Lujan is trying to study, and pitches a fit over her econ book. Marcos comes up and offers to help her, and Lujan eagerly accepts. Aw. She awkwardly compliments him, telling him he’s lucky he understands “all this stuff.” Marcos pouts that he might get the econ homework, but when it comes to everything else, he’s a “total pomelo.” And yet, not enough of a pomelo that he hasn’t noticed “Marizza”‘s letters are a little weird. He pulls the latest one out and asks Lujan if that really sounds like Marizza. She basically confesses her love for him right on the page, it’s not very Marizza-like. Lujan’s like, “Uh…well…if she wrote it out, that must be what she really feels!” Dammit, Lujan!

Mia heads out to meet Blas, but Manuel rolls up to stop her. He tells her that she can’t go out with Blas because he’s in cahoots with the Society. Hasn’t she noticed that Blas is always picking on the scholarship students? This is SERIOUS BUSINESS. You know what else is serious business? Statutory rape, but Manuel doesn’t bring that up. Mia looks like she’s actually taking this seriously, but then Manuel starts lecturing her on the importance of caring about Real Issues. She claps her hands over her ears and starts singing “I’m not listening!” until Manuel has to leave before he implodes with the immaturity of it all. Nevertheless, when Blas shows up, Mia says her dad doesn’t want her leaving the school. Run, Mia! Save yourself! “Well, we’ll go out another time,” Blas says. Like maybe when she’s legal, creepy.

Pablo, Tomás, and Guido are armed with their porn tapes. Guido’s like, “Alright, ready to watch some women being exploited?” And then — oh my God, it’s so stupid I can’t believe it happens. They go to the LOUNGE, in the middle of the school where anyone can come in, and start watching. They deserve to get caught, man. That’s just dumb. Predictably, all the girls walk in to have a study session, and there’s some “wacky” hijinks as the boys try to cover up the sound of porn moaning by pretending they’re exercising or whatever. (And when I say all the girls, I mean all the girls. Why Mia is hanging with Lujan, I do not know.) They start yelling at each other over who has the right to be in the lounge, and then Blas walks in and tries to mediate. The boys try to take advantage of the confusion and tell Tomás to turn off the TV. Why would they trust Tomás to do something important like that? Naturally all he succeeds in doing is unpausing the video, and everyone realizes they’re watching porn. Except Blas, who’s all like, “WHAT IS THIS?” Please, as if he doesn’t have a stash of schoolgirl fetish porn somewhere.

Pilar and Joaquin meet up in the cupboard under the stairs. Pilar tells Joaquin that her dad doesn’t want them dating, so they’re going to have to keep their relationship on the DL. Joaquin’s like, “Cool, that will make it much easier to cheat on you.” Just kidding. Pilar seems to know what he’s thinking, though, and tells him she doesn’t want him seeing any other girls. Especially ’cause she’s planning on putting out this time around, so she doesn’t want any STDs. They sink out of the frame, although as ever, it’s hard to tell if they actually have sex.

The next day, which seems to be Monday. Feli whines that she has to cram because she spent all weekend under Augusto’s thumb. Mia says she made them cheat sheets and hands one to Feli. After a moment, she gives one to Vico, too, which Vico quietly accepts. It’s a pretty nice scene, actually.

Dunoff’s office. He’s disciplining Pablo, Tomás, and Guido, while Mansilla stands by. Dunoff’s like, “And they were watching porn, in the middle of the lounge, like IDIOTS.” “…maybe they like movies,” Mansilla suggests. Mansilla’s really lost his touch, hasn’t he? He’s been kind of a buffoon, to put it kindly, for the last few episodes.

Hallway. Julieta is all pissed with Manuel for letting his obsession with Mia peek through once again. He denies it, again, blah blah he’s just stalking her for her dad blah. Julieta’s like, “Come talk to me when you can admit you have a huge crush on her,” and swans off on Rodrigo’s arm. Heh.

Lujan calls Pepa and tells her to tell Marizza to call Lujan, because Lujan’s fucked up big time and needs Marizza to bail her out, as usual. Pepa writes down the message and then immediately blows her nose with it. Fucking Pepa.

All the kids go into class. Marcos is over-the-top mean to Manuel for bumping into him, and Mia’s like, “Dude, what’s Marcos’s deal?” Aw. I don’t believe Mia would ever notice a single thing Marcos does, but it’s cute anyway. Luna says she can’t tell her, which isn’t suspicious at all. Hilda comes in and starts lecturing them about the colonization of the Americas, and Mia keeps pestering Luna via text. Again, I always like when characters who don’t usually interact get along, but since when has Mia ever cared about Marcos?

Cafeteria. Matías shows up looking for Luna, and Sandra makes Cata go talk to him to figure out what he wants. Matías asks Cata if he can see a menu. What kind of cafeteria has an actual paper menu? How do Cata and Sandra feed and serve the entire school restaurant-style? What do they do for big meals, like dinner? Can they hold all the classes in that one cafeteria? I have so many questions, and I just know I’ll never have any answers. Anyway, Matías claims he’s Luna’s cousin. Sandra immediately calls bullshit, because that would make Matías her son. Matías is like, “Oh shit…I fucked up with that one.” He admits that he’s here to see Luna because he liiiikes her, which immediately wins Sandra over. Jesus, Sandra, don’t go giving in to every guy who claims to like your niece. She grills Matías a bit about his life, and he says he’s in some kind of university-level program, which causes Sandra to raise her eyebrows. Well, I’m glad ONE person on this show cares about inappropriate age differences. But then Matías says that he’s actually sixteen, he’s just skipped a few grades. Sandra’s like, “Intelligent AND has nice eyebrows? Sign Luna up!” She scurries off to go find Luna, leaving Matías confused in her wake.

rebelde96201

He is very pretty, not going to lie. And has aged pretty well, too.

Vico catches up to Joaquin by his locker, and he’s like, “Go away, my girlfriend’s putting out now, so I don’t need to cheat with you anymore.” Not in so many words. But no, Vico is not here to resume being the other woman: she’s here for drugs. Gasp! Wait, shouldn’t both of them be in class?

Sandra comes into class and hauls Luna out all, “Yo, there is someone waiting for you in the cafeteria, and he is FIIIINE.” Luna sees Matías through the door and starts backing up all, “Aw hell no,” but Sandra hustles her in anyway. She makes Cata go spy on them (hee!), and Cata overhears Luna gently letting him down. He’s hot and all, but he’s no Boy Detective. Matías is sad, but skipping grades don’t mean nothing if you can’t solve crime. Luna says she has to get back to class and leaves, and then the bell rings like five seconds later. Nico comes in and is all, “What are YOU doing here,” and Matías obliviously is like, “Hey man, let’s hang out!” Hee. Maybe he’s not that smart.

Casa Colucci. Papa C tells Mercedes that he and Mia have talked it out, but he’s a little worried, as apparently Mercedes told Mia something about Mama C. He’s all pissed that Mercedes called Mama C a “cualquiera” (skank, loose woman), because she totally wasn’t! She was a pure angel! Mercedes is like, you were blinded by love (and possibly science), because she so totally was a loose woman. Papa C’s not happy with this, and Mercedes blusters that it’s all in the past and they can just move on and focus on Mia. Papa C snaps that Mercedes isn’t allowed to talk to Mia about Mama C or Papa C’s past; that’s HIS business. Oooh.

Hallway. Mia sits Luna down and demands to know why Marcos is acting so weird. Luna’s like, “Oh yeah, he’s totally infiltrating the Society, it’s TOP SECRET.” If it’s top secret, can’t they have this conversation somewhere less conspicuous? Mia, I guess inspired by Marcos’s bravery, goes off to find Blas to prove she also cares about Real Issues.

Julieta and Manuel break up in the cafeteria. He’s like, “I’m obsessed with Mia, for reasons I cannot tell you, but I hate her for real.” Julieta opines that Manuel’s just afraid of what he feels for her, and until he figures it out, they should put the brakes on their relationship. He agrees, and they’re both pretty mature about it. But wow, Manuel’s been at this school for like two months and he’s already broken up with like 3 girls.

Teachers’ lounge. Mia brings Blas a lollipop (ick) and flirts with him (iiick). She talks him into having a picnic one day, and Blas muses that he thinks something’s going on with her: “You’re looking at me in a certain way.” IIIIIIIIIIIICK. Mia gets the hell out of there, and Blas is like, “She’s definitely going to be mine.” IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK.

rebelde127901

MAKE HIM GO AWAY!!!

Papa B’s caught wind of Pablo’s indiscretion and storms into school to yell at him. For once, even the brown-nosing econ teacher won’t let Papa B do whatever he wants, and tells him to wait until Pablo’s done with the exam. Speaking of exams, everyone’s pitching a fit, like they’ve never had midterms or finals before. How did they get into third year? Econ teacher notes that Vico hasn’t shown up, like dang Vico, care about your education a little! Blah blah exam montage blah. Lujan and Marcos exchange study buddy smiles (aw!). Guido tries to cheat off Pilar. Tomás tries to cheat off Pablo. Feli gets busted with her cheat sheet, and the econ teacher recognizes Mia’s handwriting. Mia says that it was just a study guide, but the teacher says they’re both in trouble for cheating. I guess they fail the exam? The teacher says that he’ll see them in December, which according to Google is when the school year ends. So are they just…suspended for the rest of the year? Does he mean they have to make it up in summer school? Are these midterms, or are they finals before winter break? If so, then it’s already July and it’s been about three and a half months since episode 1. Why am I trying to apply real world logic here? Anyway, Mia snaps that he can go ahead and kick her out, he gets his clothes through a barter club anyway! Everyone laughs at this witticism as she storms out. ~*~REBELDE~*~

And thus, we end with Vico. She’s probably also going to fail her exam, as she’s skipping it to lie on her bed and cry. Although I guess Joaquin is also going to fail, since he’s skipping to leave drugs at her door. Vico gets all excited when she sees a velvet box (“A ring?!” she gasps), but inside is one of Joaquin’s pills. He only deals one at a time? He’s lucky he has a monopoly on the Elite Way market. Vico goes to call her dad, who blows off visiting her again, because his wife (not Vico’s mom, I’m guessing) is pregnant. She cries and takes Joaquin’s pill. Ominous!

Her hair was not looking good in this episode, by the way.
