Rebelde Way 1×041: Let’s Make a Deal

Previously on Rebelde Way: Joaquin is doing drugs, and he’s dumb enough to buy them right in front of his classmates. Marizza tricked a medical professional into believing her bad acting, again. She also overheard Guido telling Fernanda that he’s only taking her out because Mia asked him to, and Fernanda was all into that because fucking with the secondary characters’ love interests is the closest she’s going to get to the main cast. Feli, on the other hand, got mildly into the idea of dating Guido, because her self-esteem is even lower than it was at the beginning of the series, if at all possible. Marcos is in love with Marizza because he doesn’t know what’s good for himself. The school board has ordered Dunoff to hire some creepy guy, who’s apparently here to waste the school’s budget by standing around and hitting on teenagers.

Opening monologue: Our lives never suck as much as we think they do. Even the darkest night has a star~*~*~ That’s beautiful.

I don’t know if it’ll be super obvious, but I wrote this a little differently. Usually I watch scene-by-scene and write a paragraph or so for each one, and then go back and rearrange parts to make it less choppy. I was super pressed for time because I’m lazy as shit so I just watched the episode straight through while taking notes, and then tried to match them up with screencaps. So if the dialogue is even more nonsensical than usual, that’s why!

Anyway, we begin. Sonia has showed up to school about Marizza’s mental issues, again. I like how this show gets so close to figuring out there’s something wrong with Marizza and then backs off all, “Oh ha ha! She’s just faking it to mess with the teachers!” Dudes, it’s so obvious she has some kind of problem. The doctor tells Sonia that Marizza’s having panic attacks for real and she can’t be left alone lest she commit suicide or something. Sonia’s like, “No problem! I will be the most involved parent EVER!” She calls Pepa and cancels all her meetings so she can be with Marizza all day. I’m sure Marizza will really appreciate that, although I guess we should be grateful Sonia didn’t throw herself into Dunoff’s arms this time.

Lujan is emo for some reason — seriously, it’s not ever mentioned — and Luna’s like, “Omg, she hasn’t even been exercising!” That’s how bad it is! Marizza decides they’ll have a girls’ day together before she runs off to the club. That’s happening tonight, remember? And the band still can’t get their shit together.

Manuel getting ready to leave for the fashion show, and Vico is being hella clingy. He’s like, “Don’t be so pushy, I’m Mexican, remember?” What’s that supposed to mean? Anyway, they make out and Vico emos when Manuel leaves.

Outside, Mama Dunoff and Pilar are spending some quality time together. Mama D tells her that she’s planning on going back to school and studying sociology. She’s like, “Yeah, I wish I had finished my education. I married your dad super young and it fucked my life right up.” Speaking of Dunoff! He rolls up with Joaquin and is like, “Pilar! I see you’re doing something besides selling yourself to Joaquin, and we can’t be having that!” He and Mama D leave them alone together, which makes Pilar clearly uncomfortable after the shady dealings she witnessed last episode.

Mia’s room. “I’m so pretty,” she sighs to the mirror. HEE! Feli frets over her date with Guido, and tells Mia not to get her hopes up for Feli and Guido becoming a power couple. Mia’s like, “Don’t be silly, you two will totally fall in love and be 2gether 4eva!” Uh, Mia, this is Guido we’re talking about. She demands that Feli tell her all the gory details of the date when she gets back, and Feli’s like, “Yikes.” Mia waltzes out of the school to go to Papa C’s show. On her way out, Blas is like, “Damn girl, lookin’ good.” She’s fourteen, Blas.

Anyway, Mia gets into the car with Peter, and screams when she sees Manuel sitting there. Heh.

Back in the room, Vico is crying over spending the weekend without Manuel. Dang, what kind of hold does Manuel have over girls when he dates them? Does he have beer-flavored nipples? Anyway, she’s not the only person with love woes: some rando who is not Fernanda or Random Amanda pops up and gives Feli a note from Guido. He’s like, “Yeah, no can do this Saturday. Maybe next week. Ciao.” Feli is not pleased.

Lounge. Mansilla finds Lulu and is like, “So what’s your deal with me? Are you mad that I’m a better teacher than you?” Just kidding, not that last part. At least not in so many words. She snips that she’s NOT BITTER AT ALL that he tried to help her out in class that one time, so he can just BACK OFF. Then the econ teacher rocks up and Lulu’s all up on him, and Mansilla’s like, “Oookay, backing away now.”

Marizza decides to have some sisterhood ritual in her room with Lujan and Luna. They light some candles, which seems unsafe to me. I remember not being allowed to have anything with an open flame when I lived in a dorm. But why am I surprised at the lack of safety and supervision at Elite Way? Marizza dramatically tells Lujan and Luna that the three of them will be friends forever, and they make a promise to always be there for each other even when they finally graduate from this hell school. They all tear up, even Lujan, and have a group hug. They’re bosom friends now! Lujan won’t have to talk to Katie Maurice in the mirror anymore! Then Sonia crashes their friendship ceremony and drags them all off to the lounge for a talk. When Marizza’s not amenable to that, Sonia decides to have a dance party instead. Woo! Gratuitous dancing! It’s not choreographed to early 2000s pop music, but I’ll take it anyway.

Vico opens her closet to find all the clothes slashed up, and the Society’s calling card pinned to the door. The scare chord kicks up into a whole scare verse.

Manuel is dragging Mia around the fashion show while she mingles with high society types. They try to figure out which important Aguirre family Manuel is from, and he deadpans, “The Aguirres of Mexico.” Heh. Mia BSes that Manuel’s the son of a very important Mexican politician, and everyone oohs and ahs. Then Vico calls, freaking out about the Society. Mia is ready to drop everything to run back to school, but Manuel’s like, “Aw hell no, I’m not calling her to tell her I’m at the show with you, that would be like, awkward for me.” Man, he is not worth crying over, Vico.

Joaquin takes Pilar out to a park, where his shady-ass dealer is waiting for him. Why does Joaquin keep doing his drug deals while he’s out with Pilar? Is it like more efficient this way? Anyway, Pilar’s like, “Dude, are you on steroids?” and Joaquin’s like, “No way, these pills are totes legit. Here, take one and see for yourself!” Pilar refuses to be peer pressured into it, and Joaquin gets all pissy that she’s totally a tattletale principal’s daughter, just like everyone says she is. Pilar huffs that she won’t take the pills, but she’s not a snitch.

Two scenes later, the dance party is still going. Even Marcos is dancing, but Marizza just sits by and pouts. Sonia drags everyone in the vicinity into her shenanigans, including Mansilla and Lulu, just in time for her to decide that choosing your own partner is BORING, and everyone should immediately pair up with whoever’s behind them. Mansilla and Lulu are stuck together, naturally. Yeah, Mansilla doesn’t like it so much when it’s being done to him. Nevertheless, they grit their teeth and slow dance, and get a little into it. Meanwhile, Marcos takes a break and Marizza thanks him for helping her lie to the psychologist. They hug and make up.

Fashion show. Some lady who’s way too old for Manuel coos to Mia about how cute her date is. Mia BSes some more about how important Manuel’s dad is — “he might just be the future president of Mexico!” Random Lady gets all twitterpated, and Mia convinces her to distract Manuel so Mia can make a break for it. The lady pretends to need help walking, and Manuel swoops in to be all chivalrous while Mia runs off.

Cafeteria. Feli and Marizza fight about the band, again, some more. Feli tries to get Marizza alone to talk about it, but Marizza goes ahead and spills about it in front of Lujan. Feli’s like, “Dude, you said we weren’t supposed to tell anyone,” and Marizza’s like, “Rules don’t apply to me, you know that.” Feli tries to punk out because of her low self-esteem (again, some more), and Marizza’s like, “Stop saying words.” She tricks Sonia into staying at the school and regaling everyone with stories of her romantic escapades while Marizza and Feli sneak out.

Dunoff chats up Joaquin’s Very Important Uncle again. Very Important Uncle is all pleased that Joaquin seems to be getting on at Elite Way (wasn’t he all pissed last episode that Joaquin wanted to drop out? Whatever). He’s so pleased that he wants to make a deal with Dunoff! See, he and a bunch of other rich guys want to set up a foundation and use it to be shady with the money, if Dunoff gets his drift. Dunoff’s like, “Not rly, but go on.” Very Important Uncle writes Dunoff a check. But most disturbingly, Dunoff is wearing jeans. You wouldn’t think that’d be a big deal, but it somehow manages to be the weirdest thing I’ve seen in this show.

vlcsnap-00009

WEIRD.

Mansilla brings Lulu an envelope, which turns out to be a response from a dance competition that Lulu wants to send Elite Way to. It appears to be a yes, but Lulu makes a “yikes” face halfway through the letter. Mansilla’s like, “Hey, we don’t hate each other anymore because of that one dance we did together, what’s up with this letter?” But Lulu still won’t tell him, and she’s like, “Yeah, I still wanna bang the creepy econ teacher more than you, bye.”

Nighttime at Nico’s club. This club somehow manages to look different every time they’re there. Anyway, he and Tatiana are still super awkward together. Marizza and Pablo are already there, and Pablo gets a call from Papa B commanding him to come home now. Pablo tries to weasel his way out of it, but he’s no match for Papa B’s verbal abuse. Finally Marizza grabs the phone and is like, “Yo, you’re ruining your son’s chances of getting laid tonight, peace out.” Papa B’s all like, “Woo, get it Pablo!” and lets him off the hook. Pablo’s not pleased that she intervened, but Marizza’s just like, “I had to do something, listening to you get bowled over by your dad was hella embarrassing.”

Across town, Manuel finds Mia and decides that he has to drag her to the club with him. He forces her into a taxi, which looks a bit like a kidnapping, actually. You’d think a passerby would notice that.

Sonia frets that she doesn’t want to tell her best stories without Marizza there, and Lujan and Luna finally admit that Marizza’s not coming back to the room. They’re like, “Promise you won’t freak out?” and Sonia’s like, “Of course.” “Marizza’s not coming.” “WHAT????” Oh, Sonia.

Mama B finds Pilar at Gloria’s desk, looking up something on the computer. They chat a bit about Pilar’s outing with Joaquin, then Dunoff comes in waving his check all, “We will eat well tonight!” Mama B is suspicious of where the money came from and Dunoff’s like, “Weren’t you just needling me about not having enough money? Why does nothing please you?” He tells her it’s “men stuff”, which isn’t weird at all. Then he turns his attention to Pilar all, “How was your date with Joaquin? I hope it went well because me and his uncle are going into crime together.” Not in so many words, of course.

The club. The song playing the background sounds famil — OH MY GOD, IT’S THE FUCKING KETCHUP SONG. Please tell me there’s a dance routine to this song in the future. Anyway, Manuel shows up with Mia in tow, and Feli is pissed. Mia wants to know what Feli’s doing here, and she tells Mia that she’s in the band. Mia’s like, “No fucking way.” Feli tells her that she didn’t exactly have anything better to do, since Guido stood her up, and Marizza’s like, “Whatever, he was only taking you out because Mia told him to.” Now Feli is really pissed, and she and Mia almost rumble, but Manuel breaks it up. He tries to calm Feli down, but she snaps at everyone to stop meddling in her life and runs away. Oh look, it looks like Mia’s conveniently back in the band.

Sonia browbeats Lujan and Luna into telling her where Marizza is, and Luna brings her to the club. Well, if anyone starts stripping, Sonia will probably take it better than Papa C did. Nico sees them and is like, “Aw shit, I really needed to add my ex-girlfriend to all the drama tonight.” Luna comes over and Manuel’s like, “Jesus Christ Marizza, do you not know what the word ‘secret’ means,” and Marizza says it’s cool because Luna’s like her sister. Manuel: “Well, in that case, Mia is also like my sister! My sister who I lowkey wanna make out with!” Tatiana interrupts them and tells them that they have to get their quartet on stage now. The band’s like, “Well damn, where are we gonna get another person.” Mia’s like NO and Luna’s like HELL NO. Manuel suggests that they just go on as a trio and Tatiana’s like, “No! You must have four members, for contrivance purposes!” WHAT DO.
