Rebelde Way 1×039: Discipline and Other Confusing Concepts

Previously on Rebelde Way: Papa C and Sonia almost got along for five seconds, then they started fighting again. Manuel, Pablo, and Marizza’s band needs another girl, so Marizza roped Feli into singing. This threw a wrench into Mia’s plans to hook Feli and Guido up, although I don’t see the tragedy there. Marizza and Luna accused Lujan of being a thief, so now she’s leaving the school FOREVER. Way to overreact, Lujan.

Opening monologue: People will come and go in your life, but friends will be in your heart forever. YOUUUUU’LL BEEEEEE IN MYYY HEART —  sorry, what?

We pick up where we left off. Actually, we pick up slightly before, and have to watch Marizza and Luna face off against Lujan and Gloria again. Lujan tells them that she has permission to leave for the day, but she’s actually leaving FOREVER! Marizza blurts out that Lujan can’t leave without saying goodbye to her BFFs, and tries to whisper to her that she’s being crazy and they’ll wait for her at school. Lujan’s like, “Haha, no.” Marizza wails to Luna that this is all her fault, and she has to fix it by — what else? — stalking Lujan. Marizza runs off while Luna goes to class and gets chewed out by Hilda. Poor dumb Luna.

Sonia passive-aggressively sends Papa C a huge funeral wreath bemoaning his lack of honor and chivalry or whatever. Papa C is cottoning onto her ways, because he’s amused rather than offended. Mia, meanwhile, is home playing sick after her fainting spell last episode. Papa C wonders if he should take this opportunity to meddle into what went on with her and Joaquin, but Peter tells him that teenage drama should be kept between teenagers.

Marizza spots Lujan getting a mysterious folder from some shady guys outside the school. Clearly the best way to get to the bottom of this is to hitch a ride in the shady guys’ van! She follows Lujan to some janky construction site, which turns out to be where Lujan’s orphanage used to stand. Lujan starts crying all over the construction worker and runs off to find out where they sent all the orphans.

Mama D comes in to guilt trip Mansilla into hanging out with her. She needles him about hugging Mama B, and then tries to make out with him right in the teachers’ lounge. Dude! Mansilla freaks out, but doesn’t manage to look freaked out enough before Lulu walks in. She’s also like “DUDE.” Mama D scrams. Mansilla tries to explain, but just Lulu assures him that she’ll keep her mouth shut, and she runs away too. Poor Mansilla. He used to bring all the girls to the yard 🙁

Guido calls Mia, and she browbeats him into giving Feli another shot. He heads to the cafeteria and weasels himself back into Feli’s good graces, and tries to hit Cata up for a beer. She tells them that they don’t sell alcohol. I know, it’s shocking that part of this school is run by a responsible adult. Why doesn’t Guido just go to the corner store? Clearly they don’t have any qualms about selling beer to nine-year-olds. Manuel, at another table, overhears this and gets all up Guido’s face about how if he hurts Feli, he has to answer to Manuel. So if Guido does something to upset Feli, Manuel will rearrange his face, but if Manuel upsets Feli by moving on with her frenemy in two seconds, it’s totally cool? Come on, Manuel.

Lulu runs into Gloria and asks her which subject Mama D teaches. Gloria corrects her that Mama D isn’t a teacher, she’s the principal’s wife. Scare chord!

Sad music montage (to “Perder un amigo“) of Marizza running around the shady parts Buenos Aires looking for Lujan. She almost takes a taxi back to school, but then tells the taxi driver that she has to fix a huge mistake. The taxi driver’s like, “K.” Eventually she runs into Lujan (that was easy!) and starts crying all over her about how important her friendship is. Everyone wants Marizza’s opinion (they really don’t), but she could never trust anyone until she met Lujan (and Luna, she adds later. HEE). Marizza was stupid about the whole thief thing, and she really needs Lujan to forgive her, because who else will back her up on all of her insane plans and beat up everyone who crosses her? Lujan’s like, “That’s true.” They make up, but Lujan still won’t come back to Elite Way, because she doesn’t belong there. I bet Lujan’s spent a couple nights emoing to “Creep” on her Walkman. Marizza gets into the taxi for real this time, and the sad music kicks up a few notches while she drives off.

Vico’s brother calls and yells at her some more. She hangs up on him and decides to call her father. There’s no scare chord, but there is some ominous organ music in the background.

Luna has a meltdown over all the homework she has, since Lujan and Marizza have abandoned her to do it on her own. Belen comes up and literally drags her off to dance class, and Nico sneaks in to do Luna’s homework for her. Ah, high school romance. Sandra catches him and he begs her not to tell Luna — he just wants to help, he doesn’t want to get back into her pants or anything. Sandra’s like, “Fine, I won’t say anything, I’ll just stand here and guilt trip you about breaking up with her.” HEE!

Over in dance class, Lulu tries to teach them some steps and all the guys start drooling over her, as usual. The girls point out that the guys are fucking up on purpose and Lulu completely loses control of her class. Mansilla walks by and is like, “Want some help?” and she snaps that he can just HAVE her class, since he’s so much more EFFECTIVE than she is. Then she storms off. Mature!

Some park. A creeper with a bad mullet comes up and starts hassling Lujan. She immediately starts crying, even though I thought being on the streets made her tough and taught her how to do stuff like grab flies out of the air? Whatever. She has to be saved by Marizza. That’s embarrassing. They talk it out and Lujan agrees to come back to school.

Tomás and Random Diego work on their moves after dance class. Bless them.

Sonia shows up to the school, then Papa C shows up right after and bumps into her and then they argue for way longer than necessary over whether or not he injured her back. Whatever. The real reason Sonia’s here is because Marizza is missing. She meets with Mansilla and Dunoff in the office, and coos over how glad she is that Mansilla and his general reasonableness are here. Mansilla tells her that she has to set limits for Marizza; there’s a difference between being authoritarian and just being a responsible parent. Dunoff’s like, “Dammit, your ability to understand teenagers is making me look bad,” and he kicks Mansilla out of the room. He tells Sonia that he’s trying to be more responsible now, and so he’s gotta kick Marizza out of the school, because she’s going to fuck him up in front of Etchamendi and all those school board guys. What the hell, Dunoff! I knew he was a crappy principal before, but this is a new low. Then he starts hitting on Sonia, telling her that Marizza is an awkward reminder that he let go of the “only woman [he] ever loved.” Uh, what does any of this have to do with Marizza being gone?

Vico tells Manuel that her brother won’t let her leave the school to go to the fashion show with Manuel. She called her dad and left a message for him, so surely once he hears about this, he’ll help her! Oh, Vico, we’ve been here before. Then Nico rolls up and tells Manuel that someone’s waiting for him in their room. It’s Papa C, as usual. I don’t know why they bother to make it suspenseful at this point. Papa C dumps all his parenting problems on Manuel, again as usual. He tries to get Manuel to help Mia through her heartbreak, and Manuel finally points out that Mia hates him, and thinks she’s better than him because she’s rich. Papa C’s like, “My daughter is shallow? This is brand new information!” Manuel thinks it over and says he’ll try to get close to Mia, but Papa C has to get her to go to the fashion show with him. Dang, even Manuel knows Vico’s dad ain’t gonna come through.

Mansilla walks in on Pablo kicking the shit out of the vending machine and is like, “Yeah, we need to actually talk about your emotional issues.” Pablo tells him that Mama B’s getting back together with his abusive dad, and he’s pissed because he was ready to fight Papa B for her, and now she’s going back to him like nothing’s happened. Mansilla asks if he’s told Mama B that, and Pablo bitters that he doesn’t even want to see her. Mansilla’s like, “You were ready to set up a fake kidnapping, but you can’t talk to your mother?” He tells him to be direct, not manipulative like his dad. ~*~REBELDE~*~ No, really, the theme music starts playing and everything.

Mama B lies in wait for Mansilla in the teachers’ lounge and tries to put the mack on him again. This time it’s Tomás who walks by and sees them. Man, everyone is just in and out of that room. I don’t think I even knew where the teachers’ lounge was when I was in high school. Anyway, Mansilla tries to let her down gently, and she passive-aggressively thanks him for his friendship.

“I put my hair in an ugly early 2000s hairstyle for you!”

Mama B comes to the school to talk with Pablo, and he starts bittering at her that she BETRAYED him. Pablo knows the truth: she never really wanted to leave Papa B, because they’re EXACTLY THE SAME. Yeah! It’s not like Mama B was trapped in the role of a trophy wife without a job or education to support herself if she left! I mean, I think it’s fair that Pablo’s upset that Mama B backed out of escaping from his abusive dad, but it’s not like she did it because being married to Papa B was so awesome. Well, whatever.

Luna discovers her finished homework and notices the handwriting looks kind of like Nico’s. Yeah, did he not think she would notice that? Anyway, she’s musing over it when Tatiana rocks up looking for him. Luna runs off to go find him, and Sandra is really passive-aggressive and rude to her. My God, Sandra, you’re the adult here.

Lounge. Manuel and Nico are watching TV and more product placement for Pepsi comes on. I only mention this because the music starts all “DANCE DANCE DANCE HOY TU SUEÑO ES REAL” and I screamed in horror because it’s been like ten years and I still remember having to learn that song in high school Spanish class. Also, Manuel gets way too enthused about collecting Pepsi bottle caps, and I can’t tell if he’s meant to be sarcastic or if they’re just crowbarring some more product placement in there. Either way, it’s weird. Manuel runs off and Luna comes in to tell Nico that someone’s waiting for him. He asks if she hates him, and she tells him that she can’t be mad: their relationship was a nice dream, but all dreams have to end. Nico’s like, “Oh…yeah, for sure. As long as you don’t hate me.”

All the teachers are leaving the school, which is weird because they do seem to be hanging around at night whenever they’re needed. Whatever. Lulu crosses the courtyard and the camera actually shows the rest of the building, which is pretty big:

vlcsnap-2016-05-17-23h03m38s71

And yet, the whole show takes place in the same hallway. What’s up with that? Anyway, Mansilla rolls up and offers to give Lulu a ride and talk about why she flipped out on him during her class. She snaps at him to back off and accepts a ride from the econ teacher instead. And then on Monday morning, Lulu didn’t show up and they found her body in the econ teacher’s backyard. I’m just saying. Dude is creepy.

Sonia’s trying out her new “discipline” thing as she drags Marizza and Lujan back to school, but she’s upstaged by Dunoff, who’s reading the entire third year the riot act. They’re the worst, most ~rebelde~ class he’s ever had to deal with! Marizza, Lujan, and Luna all come into his speech late, and he starts ranting about how Marizza is the worst of all, and the only way to deal with her is expulsion. Marizza lies that she was at the doctor for her panic attacks, and then the whole thing devolves into a discussion over whether or not Marizza really has anxiety. Marizza wails that she wanted to keep it a secret so she wouldn’t get bullied, like how Joaquin is bullied for being gay. (Joaquin: “What the hell!”) Marcos and Hilda finally back her up, and Marizza escapes punishment yet again. And the entire point of this whole meeting is forgotten by everyone.

Nico tells Manuel that he and Tatiana arranged for the band to play on Saturday. Manuel flips out: SATURDAY? That’s an unknown but perilously few days away!

Meanwhile, in Pablo’s room, Pablo, Guido, and Tomás all wrestle homoerotically on the bed. Joaquin walks in on this and is like, “Why does everyone think I’m gay?” Just kidding. Guido makes fun of him and he and Joaquin almost rumble, then Mansilla comes in and makes Joaquin leave. Guido and Pablo wax on about how Mansilla’s a pretty cool dude, but Tomás isn’t sure: he saw him macking it with Dunoff’s wife!

Manuel and Nico are walking down the stairs nattering on about the band, when someone shoves a box full of their school supplies over the railing. Inside is the Society’s calling card. They’re back! I guess they were afraid they were getting overshadowed by Mansilla’s love drama.
