Previously on Rebelde Way: Mia and Marizza finally figured out that Joaquin was cheating on them, and teamed up for five seconds to exact revenge. Nico found out that one does not simply break up with the girlfriend whose family is covering your parents’ debts. Marcos confronted his emtionally abusive parents about his older brother’s death, which somehow didn’t end in all of them hugging and his asthma magically disappearing. I know, you’re shocked too.
Opening monologue: More terrible 2000s graphics! Also, being hurt is never fun. Everyone says you’ll come out stronger, but it’s hard to believe.
This episode is really weird? Not that this show has ever had amazing continuity or pacing, but it’s more bizarre and disjointed than usual. Anyway, let’s get on with it.
Sonia shows up to the school to make up with Marizza, and finds her emoing in her room. She cries to Marizza that her special mother’s intuition was tingling (I think Sandra actually called her last episode), and Marizza tries to put her off with some BS about homework. The gentle music kicks up and Sonia tells her that she doesn’t believe her, because she knows Marizza better than that. Marizza gives in and tells Sonia about Joaquin’s cheating ways. Sonia is a good parent for once and talks her through it. She tells Marizza she’s fucked up with guys before — she fell in love with a married guy once (Dunoff), but she totally got over him by heading to Spain and sleeping with the first guy she met, who was Marizza’s dad. Problem solved! Marizza’s like, “…well, that was unhelpful.” Sonia gets back on track and tells Marizza that Joaquin wasn’t worth it, and she’ll get over this and love again, with someone who actually deserves it. They hug and Sonia’s like, “Now that your emotional crisis is over, you gotta go party with your friends!” On their way out, they run into Papa C, who’s looking for Mia. Marizza and Sonia refuse to tell him where she is and have a hearty chuckle. Mother/daughter bonding!
Still stuck at school, Vico fights with Augusto over Manuel’s jacket. Augusto’s all pissy because if Vico had a boy in the house, that means she’s the school sl*t and they’ll have to send her to a nunnery, quite literally. Vico lies that a boy lent her the jacket, and snips that she’ll call their dad and tell him that Augusto’s being a dick. “Dad? Dad doesn’t give a crap about you,” Augusto says. Scare chord! Did…Vico not already know that? I feel like she did. Whatever.
The club. Everyone is still trying to BS their way out of paying the tab. Luna is emo over Nico and Tatiana showing up together and runs away. Manuel tells the bartender that Pablo is a super famous singer in Mexico, and a performance from him has gotta be worth their drink bill, amirite? The bartender’s like, “No. Cash or card.” Heh. I guess Manuel heard about Mia’s antics way back in episode 1, because he suggests that she go up there with Pablo and flash the audience a little while he sings. The bartender’s like, “Oh, well, in that case, that would totally cover your bill.” Ew.
Nico catches up to Luna. She lets him explain himself, and he manages to get out like two sentences before Tatiana rocks up and starts making out with him. Luna’s like, “…yeah.” She runs away again. Lujan catches her this time and starts berating her for ever going out with Nico. Luna grows about half an inch of spine and says, “Can’t you tell I already feel crappy?” Lujan’s like, “That would require empathy, so…no.” Luna’s too passive-aggressive to actually leave, though, and Nico chases her all over the club while Tatiana watches and emos.
Manuel gets up onstange and introduces Mia and Pablo, and they rope him into performing as well. They sing “Sweet Baby”, which is funny because they’re not singing live at all, and during “Mia”‘s part, you can clearly hear two voices instead of one. Anyway, naturally everyone loves it, even the grown-ass adults who presumably did not come here to hear a bunch of teenagers sing. Guido and Tomás especially love it when Mia starts unbuttoning her shirt. Then Papa C shows up! Awkward. Mia escapes to the bathroom, and Manuel manages to calm Papa C down. See, the only reason they’re all at the club is because Manuel is 100% committed to stalking Mia, and he’ll follow her anywhere! Even up on stage! Papa C’s like, “What an excellent and believable reason.”
Back at school, Marcos breaks down crying in the lounge. Lulu walks in and is like, “Oh yikes, awkward” and runs away. A+ teachering! She finds Mansilla and is like, “Hey, you should go take care of that crying kid.” Mansilla’s like, “Uh, aren’t you a teacher too?” For once, Mansilla doesn’t do another teacher’s job for them, and makes Lulu go handle it herself. Lulu’s like, “Uh…let me distract you with manual labor!” and makes Marcos help set up the sound system. Actually talking to him about his issues is so much work 🙁
The club. Feli and Marizza needle each other over whether Joaquin liked Mia or Marizza better (neither! He was cheating on them! Love yourselves, girls!). Lujan, bizarrely, just sits by and doesn’t get involved in this fight at all. What is happening?!
Marizza gets in a few digs at Feli’s weight, as usual. Dammit, Marizza, and I was liking you these past few episodes! Feli flounces off and Marizza scowls about how she wishes she could get violent with her, and with Pablo. She wishes she had broken his legs when she tripped him down those stairs! “You’re being mean. He just wanted to help,” Lujan tells her. WHAT? Who is this person, and what has she done with Lujan?
Papa C drags Mia outside of the club and yells at her for disappointing him. She’s grounded and not allowed to go on shopping trips or have a credit card anymore. It’s pretty reasonable parenting, but we linger on Mia’s crying face for way longer than we have to, I guess because parental discipline is so rare in this show.
Lounge. Lulu decides to cheer up Marcos by dancing with him (to “Bonita de más”, like you couldn’t have guessed that). Everyone comes back from the club and is like, “Marcos is a geek! Him dancing with the teacher, it cannot be!” Pablo, Guido, and Tomás get all pissy and start dancing with her and shove Marcos out. Marcos gives up in about two seconds and slinks off sadly. Marizza tries to talk to him, but he snaps at her to leave him alone.
Monday. Mia and Vico commiserate over their shitty weekends. Feli’s like, “Oh yeah, Vico, your weekend must have sucked. Did it have ANYTHING to do with a JACKET that a BOY left at your house on FRIDAY?” Vico’s like, “No, not really.” Heh. Mia: “Oh, are you talking about the thing with Manuel?” Also heh. Vico denies it and runs away. Feli hisses to Mia that she didn’t want Vico to know that they knew, because Vico is a lying liar. She didn’t just go on a date with Manuel, he spent the night with her! Mia is not pleased.
Sandra comforts Luna about the whole Nico thing. Nico rolls up and tries to talk to Luna, but Sandra blocks his view of her with her hair. Hee. Nico runs away but gets jumped in the hallway by Manuel, who wants to yell at him too. Nico cuts off his ranting and says that he can’t break up with Tatiana because his dad needs her money. Not in so many words. This strikes a chord with Manuel and his own papa issues, and he lets it slide. Then Vico shows up and tells him she wants to keep their relationship secret, because that’s worked out so well for everyone who’s tried it in the past. Manuel susses out that she’s afraid of Mia’s reaction, and is hella passive-aggressive about it.
Marizza catches Mia in the cafeteria, and they bring up Joaquin. Apparently, neither of them have seen him all day. What, have they not gone to class? Not like it matters, because he rocks into the cafeteria right then and Mia and Marizza bond by making fun of him. Aw! Joaquin, however, is unfazed. “Don’t cry for me, Argentina,” he snarks at them. HEE! Marizza vows more revenge.
The club, which now looks completely different than it has the first two times we’ve seen it. Mama Provenza shows up and Tatiana is like, “Nico’s moved on from our seventh-grade relationship! How could this have happened!” Just kidding, she doesn’t. She just cries.
Papa B comes to the school to talk to Dunoff. Pablo tries to confront him about canceling his credit card, but Papa B blows him off. Pablo tries to follow him into the office, but Gloria pops up and is all, “I know what you’re doing! You’re going to spy on their conversation! I know this because I do it all the time!” She hauls him off to class, and we cut to Dunoff and Papa B walking down a hallway that looks like it might actually belong to a rich school.
I’m assuming they only had the budget for that one nice hallway. Anyway, Papa B tells Dunoff that he’s not living with his wife anymore, and Dunoff’s like, “Wow, I did not need to know that about your personal life.” Papa B tells Dunoff to tell Mama B about the conversation they just had (I’m assuming it was one that the audience was not privy to, otherwise that is one short conversation), but not a word to Pablo. You know that whatever it is, it’s gotta be bad because even Dunoff’s like, “Uh, for real?”, and as we all know, lying to the students is one of his favorite hobbies.
Nico whines to Manuel that he can’t just break up with Luna. Manuel rightly tells him that he can’t please everyone, and he’s going to have to pick a side and stick with it. Nico’s like, “But my fear of conflict!!!” Just then, Tatiana’s dad shows up and hustles Nico off to the cafeteria. They talk about the club and business, blah blah blah. Tatiana’s dad tells him that everyone loved Mia, Manuel, and Pablo — Nico’s first business move was a success! He has to get them to play again! Nico’s like, “Uh, they’re not exactly a band, they don’t even like each other, and two-thirds of them are grounded for life, so…” Tatiana’s dad points out that they’re going to make hella money, and Nico caves.
Marizza corners Marcos and demands to know why he was so pissy with her. He tells her that his parents both denied that Ignacio was on drugs, so Marizza got him in trouble for nothing. Marizza points out the likelihood that his parents were lying, and Marcos points out the other likelihood that Joaquin was the one lying. “I mean, he does it all the time.” Burn! Marizza has to admit that’s true.
Teachers’ lounge. Mansilla tells Lulu that she handled the Marcos situation very well, as though she actually did anything besides distract him from his problems for like two minutes. She actually points this out, and Mansilla shrugs it off: “They’re teenagers, they have problems.” Lulu bizarrely takes offense to that: “You think I don’t know that?” She snaps that she managed to get the boys to come to dance class, like that’s an accomplishment instead of fucking up a perfectly good dance group by adding pervy teenage boys. Mansilla says as much, and he and Lulu fight over which one of them teaches the most worthless subject. Mansilla flounces out and the econ teacher comes in. Lulu asks him his opinion on Mansilla, and the econ teacher creeps at her to be careful around him.
Cafeteria. Apparently the cafeteria girl (“Cata”, maybe?) has a crush on Pablo. Sandra tells her to go for it, but Cata freaks out that he’s a student. Mansilla comes in and asks her how old she is, and she says 18. Still kind of old to be dating a 15-year-old, I think. I wouldn’t have even dated a 17-year-old when I was 18. Anyway, Cata tells him that she dropped out of high school because she had to work. Uh, is public school not free in Argentina? Mansilla suggests that she study while she works, and for some reason this is like a mind-blowing idea that nobody’s had before.
Vico snaps that Feli must have been the one to tell her brother about Manuel, which Feli denies. Vico needles Feli until she snaps and yells at her to stay away from Manuel. Vico flounces off all pleased.
In the cafeteria, Mia, Guido, Tomás, and Random Amanda make fun of Cata, who’s trying to take their orders. Oh, yikes. Dammit, Mia, I want to defend you but I can’t respect making fun of service workers. On the other side of the cafeteria, Sandra comes in and greets Luna, Lujan, and Marizza. Random Amanda notes that Luna is — horrors! — giving her aunt a hug and a kiss. Cafeteria workers don’t deserve family or affection! “Your project’s going to fail,” she tells Mia. “If you hang out with her, you’re going to end up just like her.” Okay, but who even are you, Random Amanda? You don’t even have an official name.
Nico finally manages to get Luna alone, although Marizza tells him to back off. Lujan, on the other hand, doesn’t say anything at all. She doesn’t even join in when Joaquin comes in and Marizza snaps that she’s going to castrate him. Lujan! What’s happening to you! Joaquin swears that he didn’t lie about Marcos’s brother, and for some reason that’s all it takes for Marizza to believe that he didn’t. She drags Lujan off to go find Marcos.
Vico brings Manuel up to Mia’s table and squeals that she and Manuel are going out for real. Scare chord!
Nico tells Luna that he’s definitely, for real, 100% breaking up with Tatiana soon. He doesn’t know how but like, he’s definitely going to do it. They make out.
Feli and Mia snipe about Vico and Manuel, and Mia decides she’s going to break them up. This will end well.
Marizza finds Pablo and asks why he helped her out with Joaquin. Interestingly, he needles her a bit about hiding her personality in front of the rest of their class. She snips at him that she doesn’t need a psychologist. Back the point, Pablo blusters that he helped her because she helped him and it totally had nothing to do with anything and look, he is trying to be emo with his guitar okay? Marizza backs off, but tells him that something’s going down with Dunoff and Mama B.
Hallway. Manuel is pissed at Vico for doing a 180 on keeping their relationship a secret. He’s figured out that she’s trying to annoy Feli, but Vico denies it. Man, everyone is denying everything in this episode. Bill Clinton would be proud. She tells him that she was just trying to be brave, and it was v. scary because she knows Mia hates him. Manuel is weirdly into this: “She hates me? :D” He tells Vico that he likes brave girls and they make out. Then Mia rocks up and chases Vico off so she can yell at Manuel. She correctly susses out that Manuel has a thing with her: first he was dating Feli, now Vico? Something is up here. She stomps off, and Manuel is perturbed.
Dunoff’s office. Mama B is there, and Pablo shoves his way in demanding to know what’s going on. Mama B reveals that Papa B is refusing to pay tuition, so they have to pull Pablo out of school. Oh, so that’s why Dunoff was mildly concerned. He’s going to lose money. For a second I thought he was like, actually interested in the welfare of his students.
