Rebelde Way 2×084: This is Some Bullshit

God, this episode was boring. I mean, I guess it’s too much to ask for interesting things to happen in every episode, but dang. I watch these episodes on my commute and I found myself pausing and staring out the window at the scenery that I see every day because that was more interesting than this episode.

Anyway. Dunoff walks in and tells the kids that he has news related to the Bariloche trip. So they’re not even gonna pretend that this is about rugby anymore, are they? All the kids wait on tenterhooks to see if they’re going to get their way, which, of fucking course they are. Credits!

Dunoff waxes on for a bit about how he STRUGGLED with the athletic board to plead their case, and all the kids are like, “Whatever, what did they say?” Dunoff finally says that they decided to side with Elite Way in regards to the tournament, and they’re going to Bariloche. Wait, what? So…they don’t have to play the final game and like, win? NONE OF THIS MAKES SENSE. Okay, whatever. So they’re going to Bariloche without having to play more than two games in the entire damn rugby tournament. As you do. All the kids celebrate like their rich asses have never been on vacation in their lives.

(Okay, I read the Youtube comments because some people were just as confused as me, and apparently, Erreway were up against the Uruguayans in the finals because why not, but the Uruguayans were disqualified for being dirty cheaters, so Elite Way won the competition. How they got to the finals by only playing one game is never explained.)

Papa C and Sonia and Michi meet up to discuss their game plan some more. Papa C accidentally insults Michi, again, some more, and she acts a fool, again, some more. Sorry if you actually want to know what’s happening in these scenes, because this whole subplot bores me and I don’t care enough to pay attention. Then Mia calls and tells Papa C that she can’t come to dinner, and Papa C’s like, “But, but, I put up with someone who’s not skinny for this!”

Pablo finds Javier in his room, and snipes that they’re alone now so Javier can drop his act. He tells Javier not to say a word about Pablo playing in a band, otherwise Pablo will break his head, because he knows damn well Javier doesn’t have a hole in his brain. Javier is all supposedly evil like, “Fine. I won’t say anything about your band, and you won’t say anything about my brain problem.” Pablo looks visibly nervous by this, even though…that’s literally what he just said.

Vico confronts Rocco and wants to know what he told her dad. Rocco blusters that she should be thanking him, because he knew that she didn’t want to talk to him. Vico’s like, “You literally made everything a thousand times worse, so THANKS.” She tells him that she has to go to her dad’s house now, and Rocco’s like, “Well, then don’t go.” She’s like, “Sure, because my dad’s really going to love that.” Rocco assures her that everything will be totally fine. I bet it won’t be.

Sonia, Papa C, and Michi eat together and argue some more. Papa C doesn’t want Mia to go on tour, and Michi butts in all, “You should totally let her do it!” Papa C is not pleased at all that she’s putting her two cents in, but Sonia’s like, “Eh, she’s right.” Papa C is double not pleased that Sonia is disagreeing with him about Mia.

Martavio tries to say goodbye to Marizza before she leaves on the Bariloche trip, but Marizza blows him off.

Over at Casa Bustamante, Ines is fretting over letting Javier go on a trip by himself. He’s such a fragile flower! Ines, your son is like thirty years old, if you haven’t noticed. Pablo waltzes in and he’s like, “Aw, Javier can’t go on the trip? That’s too bad, huh.” Hee. Papa B stops him and wants to know which teacher is chaperoning, and Pablo says that it’s Carmen. They’re sending one teacher on a trip with thirty kids? Wait, that’s exactly the kind of shitty planning I would expect from Elite Way. I don’t know why I was surprised.

Apparently in a scene that we didn’t get to see, Marizza told Lujan the truth about Martavio. Lujan tries to be all like, “But you got along with him when you thought he was just a teacher, so why are you mad at him now?” which is something people have said to Marizza at least a couple of times and it is epically stupid. Like, yeah, of course she got along with Martavio before she found out that he was stalking her and trying to force his way into her life. I have also gotten along with people before I found out terrible things about their personalities. Anyway, Marizza doesn’t want to talk about this anymore, and resolves to just focus on having fun in Bariloche, where Martavio DEFINITELY won’t be.

In a shocking twist, Dunoff tells Martavio that Carmen doesn’t want to accompany the kids to Bariloche. Ergo, Martavio has to do it! Martavio has the grace to know that Marizza probably won’t love him waltzing along on her trip, but he can’t say no, because…then he would lose this job that he doesn’t need and only took so he could stalk his daughter? I don’t know.

So apparently when Mia called Papa C, it was to tell him about Erreway going on tour. Papa C wasn’t thrilled about it, so she called Sonia. It’s amazing how we saw that entire scene and in no way was that made clear. Anyway, so now Sonia and Papa C are meeting up with Mia at a cafe. Naturally, Papa C doesn’t want Mia to go, while Sonia is all for it. “If I don’t go on the tour, I’ll die!” Mia says. She’s such a teenager. She pulls out the permission slip from Dunoff, and Sonia urges Papa C to sign it. Papa C caves and says that Mia can go on the Bariloche trip, but not on tour. Mia says that it’s the tour or nothing, and Papa C’s like, “Fine, then you can stay here.” The camera zooms in dramatically on Mia’s face like this isn’t the same thing that any decent parent would say.

Then like…later the same day? I have no idea — Erreway gathers in the front hall with their bags packed. Mia is nervous about disobeying Papa C, and Pablo tries to peer pressure her into going. Marizza and Manuel back Mia up — or, well, Manuel tries, but Mia snaps that she doesn’t need HIS help. Heh. Then Sonia shows up and says that she’s going to enable them going on tour, and she totally convinced Papa C that it was cool. I bet she didn’t. All the kids are thrilled with her, except Marizza.

Laura tells Lujan that they’re leaving in like five minutes — wow, that was fast — and Lujan’s not done packing, which is making her nervous. Lujan’s trying to unlock Blas’s laptop and insists that this can’t wait. Uh, Lujan, just take the laptop with you. That was the whole point of laptops in the early 2000s!

Over in Pablo’s room, Guido’s in the midst of packing when Augustina’s dad comes in. He’s like, “Didn’t you tell my daughter that you were going to stay here?” Yikes. Then he punches Guido in the stomach, except he doesn’t, because Guido is hallucinating. Tomás is like, “Dude, what is up with you?” and Guido says that he can’t go to Bariloche, because Augustina’s dad will kill him. Then Augustina herself pops up and tries to get Guido to eat breakfast with her. Guido steers her away from seeing his packed bag, and assures her that he’ll see her later. Tomás tells him to just come on the trip with them and leave Augustina a note or something. Guido begs him for help, but Tomás is like, “Nah, Pilar’s waiting for me, you’re on your own.” Hee! I love that Tomás somehow has his life together the most all of a sudden.

All the kids are getting on the bus and SERIOUSLY, HOW MUCH TIME HAS PASSED BETWEEN THE BEGINNING OF THE EPISODE AND NOW? Like, did they just tell their parents “LOL going to Bariloche bye!” Anyway, Dunoff and Martavio exposit a bit that Mia, Manuel, Pablo, and Marizza won’t be going on the trip. Martavio doesn’t seem weirded out by this at all, for some reason. Like…I don’t support him being weird and overbearing, but if he has to be, now seems like the time to do it.

Then Pilar and Mama D roll up, and Martavio’s like, “Awkward, I’m bailing now.” The Dunoffs say their goodbyes, and all around the school parents are saying bye to their kids. Rocco’s dad presents him with a new camera, and they’re getting along real well considering I’m pretty sure Rocco’s dad is abusive? Did I just make that up right now?

Anyway, Papa C shows up at school and tells Sonia that he wants to go on the Bariloche trip — that way he can bond with Mia and keep an eye on her, and also have a nice vacation. It’s three birds with one stone, that’s even better than two! Sonia tries to assure him that there’s no need to go, and Papa C’s like, “You’re up to something.” Heh. Sonia tells him that the kids are on their tour, and Papa C’s like, “What a hilarious joke!” and they laugh uncomfortably for like two minutes before Papa C’s like, “Aw, shit, you’re not joking.”

Lola cries to Augustina that Pablo left like five minutes ago and she already misses him. I’m running out of different ways to describe Lola and Augustina as pathetic. I miss Bianca. At least she livened things up with her kidnapping of dogs and occasional resistance of Lola’s madcap plans. Augustina’s not particularly sympathetic, and Lola notes that Augustina’s just happy because her boyfriend is staying with her. “Yup!” Augustina chirps. And then Gloria shows up and hands Augustina Guido’s letter. So, yeah, you know how Tomás told Guido to dump Augustina via letter? Guido apparently interpreted that as instructions to tell Augustina that Tomás is dating Pilar, but he doesn’t really like her, so Guido’s gone to Bariloche to help Tomás dump her. But he didn’t want to, and he still really loves Augustina and definitely won’t break up with her as soon as he comes back.

Guido just brings this on himself, man.

Rocco is filming on the bus, and Vico says that she still wants to pay him back, even though his dad replaced his camera. Didn’t she already…whatever.

Sol gushes to Fernanda that she’s going to use this trip to get revenge on Feli. Fernanda’s barely listening, though, because she’s all salty that Marcos has moved on to Laura. Sol says that Fernanda should try to win Marcos back on this trip.

Meanwhile, Tomás’s head is in Pilar’s lap. Way to keep your relationship on the DL, you guys. Guido shoos Pilar away so that he can talk to Tomás. He panics to Tomás that Augustina will tell her dad that Guido broke his promise, and then Guido’s going to get punched by Nicolas Cage. Tomás is like, “Wow that’s crazy.”

Sonia and Papa C go to eat and talk about how she totally let Mia run off on tour without his permission. Sonia tells Papa C that Mia has to go do things on her own, and being trapped in a tour with Manuel will be good for her self-growth or whatever. Papa C is pissed, and snipes at Sonia that she really shouldn’t be lecturing him on parenting — how’s Marizza, by the way? Sonia gets all upset and snaps that it’s none of his business, because they’re over. She takes off her engagement ring and dumps it in her drink, and everyone else in the restaurant is like, “OOOH, DRAMA.”

Whatever. It was stupid of them to be secretly engaged anyway. Also, Papa C was a dick about Sonia’s parenting skills, but he wasn’t wrong.

Javier is off sk8er-boing it around town. His friend with the eyebrows bets some kid that Javier can do a trick without falling, and of course Javier wipes the fuck out. Ha! Eyebrow Friend is all bummed that Javier let him down. Join the club, Eyebrow Friend.

Meanwhile, Erreway is on some fancy-ass plane to wherever the hell their tour is. Marizza has a ton of childhood flashbacks to how Sonia always enabled her and let her get away with whatever she wanted. Shed a tear for the good times! She’s sitting there drifting off, and Pablo sits down next to her and is all like, “She’s so beautiful when she’s unconscious and not yelling at people!” He kisses her, which is weird enough on its own, except he’s kinda like getting into it and OH MY GOD, SHE’S UNCONSCIOUS, PABLO.

Marizza wakes up and Pablo leaps back to his side of the airplane. She’s like, “Dude, did you kiss me?” and he’s all, “PFFT, no, why would I do that? You were sleeping!” THAT’S WHAT I SAID, PABLO, BUT IT DIDN’T STOP YOU! Marizza insists that she felt it, and then we lapse into the video for “Sera de Dios.” Blah blah Erreway sharing bathtubs and showers blah blah fanservice blah.

Now we go from that emotional moment to…more Javier. Eyebrow Friend needles him for wiping out, and Javier says his head is somewhere else. Up his ass, maybe. He whines that he can’t stop thinking about Marizza, and how he misses her every minute that she’s away from him, and he dreams about her, and he reads her diary…Eyebrow Friend is like, “That sounds normal.” He snarks that Javier’s going to have to put his stalker plans on hold until Marizza gets back from Bariloche, and Javier’s like, “OR DO I?”

The Bariloche bus stops for a bathroom break, and Sol takes the opportunity to needle Feli about her fight with Mia. She insists that a REAL friend would forgive anything, and Sol totally would, if she were Feli’s friend. Feli manages to have a backbone for half a minute and tells Sol to back off, but after Sol leaves, Feli looks perturbed. RIP Feli’s backbone, episodes 80-84.

Francisco meets up with some rando at the bus stop, and I really can’t tell if they’re meant to know each other or not. She invites him to go to a second location with her, and his dick’s all like, “Why not?”

Meanwhile, Guido’s called Augustina and reassured her that they’re totally still together and he definitely isn’t thinking about breaking up with her. Guido is the worst, but we knew that. Tomás is like, “So are you done backtracking on what you said about breaking up with her?” and Guido’s like, “Hell yeah, let’s enjoy Bariloche!” They shake on it, but then Pilar rolls up and she and Tomás are all mushy together. Guido is pissed and snipes at Tomás that he must be with Pilar just to get on Dunoff’s good side. Kind of like how Guido’s only with Augustina to suck up to her rich dad! Tomás tells Guido to stop ruining his romance. Hee.

Back at school, Lola and Augustina — mostly Lola, admittedly — plot to call Pilar and tell her that Tomás is only with her to suck up to her dad. They don’t have Pilar’s number, so they decide to go back to Lola’s house and look for Marizza’s number in Laura’s things. Then they’ll call Marizza, ask her to pass the phone to Pilar, and ruin Pilar’s relationship. It’s a perfect plan! They go through Laura’s drawers and find one that’s locked. Lola is like, “Clearly her address book must be here! Why would the drawer be locked otherwise?” What, you don’t put your friends’ phone numbers behind lock and key? Even Augustina thinks Lola is being dumb, but Lola pretty promptly forgets about calling Pilar and decides that if Laura is hiding something in that drawer, Lola wants to find out what it is.

Back on the bus, Martavio decides to take roll by yelling, “IS EVERYONE HERE?” and when he gets a chorus of “Yes” back, he’s like, “Cool, no one’s missing then.” Well, if they’re missing, then they can’t answer you, can they, Martavio? Carry a fucking roll sheet like every other teacher on the planet. Anyway, I’m going to take a shot in the dark and say that everyone is not, in fact, there.

We cut back and forth between Rocco playing guitar on the bus and leading the class in a sing-along — oh, God, Rocco is one of THOSE guys — and Lola picking the lock on Laura’s drawer. Rocco finishes his song, and everyone applauds him and calls for an encore, instead of telling him to shut up so that they can go back to making out/listening to their Discmans, which is what would have happened in real life. Rocco’s like, “Wait, one person isn’t applauding me! Where’s Francisco?” Martavo’s like, “Oh, shit, where IS Francisco?” Way to chaperone, Martavio!

Meanwhile, over in Laura’s room, Lola’s going through her stuff and is like, “What’s this?” Scare chord! Not a literal one, though. We haven’t had a real scare chord on this show in so long 🙁 ( Lola pulls out a folder from the department of child services, which has a notification that one of their cases has been opened. She’s like, “This is weird.” Augustina’s like, “Whatever, let’s just call Marizza.” Lola puts to the folder to the side.

The bus goes back to the gas station where they left Francisco, and Martavio asks one of the workers where Francisco went. The guy is like, “IDK” and then some other guy is like, “I saw him go that way!” Instead of setting off to look, Martavio decides to yell at the first guy for telling him that he didn’t know where Francisco went. Because…this is that guy’s fault, somehow? Stop projecting, Martavio. Tomás and Guido insist on coming along, since Tomás is Francisco’s cousin and he’s worried at all. I’m amazed that the show remembered that they were related. Anyway, Martavio says that the boys should go look in the direction that the second guy pointed out, and he’ll look somewhere else. He tells them not to get distracted. HA! Martavio’s gonna end up losing two more kids, isn’t he?

Guido and Tomás go looking in some really shady-looking house, and this woman who I think is supposed to be a madame opens the door? She confirms that Francisco is inside, and adds that he’s “very busy.” Uh…ew. Wait, so Francisco legit got solicited by a prostitute at a truck stop, and he just went with her? Actually, I’m not really surprised that Francisco “Just cheat on your girlfriend because she won’t put out” Blanco is a john. Anyway, the madame invites them in, and they resist for about five seconds before going inside, giggling the entire time because men bond over the trauma of women in a patriarchal society. I mean, I guess they never explicitly say that this is a brothel, but like…let’s be real.

So congratulations, Javier, you are no longer the worst part of this episode! He’s over at the house, getting fussed over by his mom. He whines at her that she’s not disinfecting his elbow properly and also that he wants to go to Bariloche. All the cool kids are doing it!!! His mom tells him that it’s too late, as the kids have already left. Javier’s like, “Wait, already?” and like, I hate to agree with Javier, but for real. They announced the trip and left in the span of like ten minutes. Papa B comes home and sighs that he was supposed to go on a trip, but it was conveniently canceled. Javier suggests that they all go to Bariloche together.

The boys have been gone for so long that eventually Pilar and Lujan go looking for them. Pilar frets that Tomás might be in danger. You’re too good for him, girl! They somehow come across the shady house, and of course the madame won’t let them inside. Tomás pops out and he panics when he sees Pilar. She’s like, “What the hell are you doing here?” and Tomás blusters that he was looking for Francisco. He manages to pull Francisco and Guido out of the house — Francisco’s all giggly and Guido’s pulling his shirt down. One of the women comes out and chases after Tomás, and Pilar’s pretty upset. Lujan just laughs, because finding out that your classmates buy women is hilarious, I guess. (I mean, I think? Unless they’re in there getting lap dances or something? I don’t know if I’m just in denial about this whole thing because it is SO WEIRD and out of left field and like, I can’t tell if I’m being old and jaded or if this show for teenagers is implying what I think it’s implying.)

Anyway, after that completely random and gross interlude, they leave.

Sonia’s having lunch or whatever with Michi — these adults keep meeting up in cafes just to snack, idk — and telling her that she hates Papa C and they are never ever getting back together. Michi insists that they’re in love, I guess because she has to or her acting gig will dry up. Then Papa C shows up and gives her back the rings and says she can do whatever she wants with them, because he doesn’t care anymore. Then she storms off, and Sonia chases after him, because I guess when she told him she didn’t want his ring she didn’t like, actually mean that she wanted to break up. What do words mean?

Back on the bus, Pilar tells Tomás to get out of her sight and shoves him out of the seat next to her. HA! Suffer, Tomás. Also, good for Pilar for growing a backbone. The last time she had a boyfriend, she let him cheat on her like eighty million times. Martavio tells everyone to shut up and makes the boys and girls sit on opposite sides of the bus as punishment. After everyone goes to sleep, Tomás sneaks over to see Pilar and tries to tell her that he didn’t sleep with anyone at the PG-13 brothel. It’s actually kind of cute, maybe just because I have a soft spot for poor dumb Tomás. Pilar doesn’t believe him, though, and she snaps that he disgusts her.

Fernanda tries to sneak over to see Marcos, but he’s already found Laura and is making out with her. Fernanda cries. I’m not crying, but I am pretty grossed out.

Sonia goes to find Franco and they make out. Then she’s like, “Do you really want to break up?” and he’s like, “No,” and she’s like, “Cool,” and they go back to making out. So that happened. They agree to work on compromising about how to raise their kids. I feel like they had this conversation backwards, but whatever.

Erreway makes it to a hotel somewhere. Where is this tour? We have no idea. The hotel can’t find their names, and they panic that Sabrina’s left them stranded. Then some guy rolls up and introduces himself as Angel, and tells them that Sabrina left him in charge of the band while they’re here. The kids split up and go to their rooms, and when Manuel gets to his, Sabrina is there. Wow, so she’s just on this tour to hit on Manuel? She’s not even gonna do her job? Freaking Sabrina.
