Rebelde Way 2×074: She Said See You Later Boi

We pick up where we left off: it’s halftime (I think?) and Diego and Marizza have wandered off to make out in the woods. This is the longest halftime ever. I just Googled “rugby halftime” and it’s only 10 minutes long! Go back to the field, Diego!

Anyway, they’re macking on each other, and Marizza hints that she’s thinking of going past second base with Diego. Diego’s like, “OMG, cheating on two girls is really paying off!”, but then some random teammate comes up and tells them that the second half is about to start. Diego gets mad at him for interrupting. What, did Diego think they were gonna have sex right then and there? I mean, I guess 10 minutes is long enough for a teenage boy.

Marizza doesn’t go back to the field, because…I guess they don’t need cheerleaders for the rest of the game? I don’t know. Then Papa B’s girlfriend’s son skateboards over her. He’s wearing a baseball cap pulled really low over his eyes, and tells Marizza that he’s blind and he didn’t mean to run over her. Uh…if he’s blind, maybe he shouldn’t be skateboarding around an unfamiliar environment? Whatever. He starts groping at her, saying “What a nice color! Is that your hair?” and then not at all subtly grabbing for the red sweater over her boobs. Smooth.

(If you haven’t figured it out by now, this kid isn’t actually blind, he’s just a perv.)

Then he starts touching her actual hair, and honestly, Marizza is far too okay with having some rando roll up and start pawing at her. Don’t be afraid to set boundaries, girl! Then he makes another remark about her sweater, and she realizes that he’s not blind and yells at him. He’s like, “LOL, trying to grope you while pretending to be blind was just a wacky joke!” Then he introduces himself as Javier.

Back at the field, the Uruguayans say that they can’t continue playing with their coach missing. Blas agrees to have the second half played another day. The Elite Way boys call them chicken, and yet another fight breaks out.

Manuel calls Sabrina, because he’s weak as fuck. She’s not picking up, so he leaves a message.

Gloria frets to Sonia that the rugby coach might die of heatstroke or thirst or literally whatever because he’s trapped in the car. Sonia’s like, “Whatever,” but then Papa C rolls up and Gloria’s guilt makes her blurt out the truth to him in five seconds. Jesus Christ, Gloria. Oh, I see, because they locked him in Papa C’s car! What the hell, guys! He should at least get a heads-up about that! Then Papa C grabs Sonia’s face and starts manhandling her, because apparently men inappropriately touching women is a running theme in this episode. Gloria sobs that she only wanted revenge because the rugby coach made her think that he liked her, and even Papa C’s like, “Dang, that’s rough.”

Javier catches up with his mom and Papa B, and they point out that he’s missed the rugby game and his chance to meet Pablo. Javier’s like, “That’s too bad, huh.” Perving on random girls in the woods was way more important! Papa B says that they can go to Elite Way and introduce the boys then.

Marizza rants to Laura about Javier faking blind to feel her up, and Laura’s like, “Eh, whatever.” Come on, Laura, Francisco’s been sexually harassing you for the past five episodes. You could relate a little better to Marizza here. Then Paloma rocks up, looking for Diego. Marizza says that the boys have already gone, and reluctantly invites her to go back to Elite Way on the girls’ bus.

Sonia and Gloria talk Papa C into taking the blame for the rugby coach being locked in his car. He refuses, until Gloria grabs him by the labels and snarls, “GO.” Hee! Papa C lets the rugby coach out and BSes that it was all a misunderstanding, and then the rugby coach sucker punches him. Fuck this guy! You know what you did, rugby coach!

The girls pile back on to the bus, and Mia tries to talk to Vico. Vico snaps at her that she doesn’t want any more of Mia’s help. Then Tato rolls up and convinces Vico to go off somewhere with him. He’s super vague about where, but they’re probably going to sell or do drugs. The van’s already leaving without Vico — nice going, guys — so she doesn’t really have a choice but to go along with Tato.

Why is Tato so weird looking? Something is just off about his face, but I don’t know what.

Marcos is angstily unpacking his bags, since his dad told him they were moving away and then told him they’re not moving away in the span of 24 hours. Lujan comes to apologize for macking on him, and he snaps at her that she just kissed him out of pity. Lujan wibbles that it wasn’t pity, and he can still count on her for anything. Marcos snaps that he doesn’t want to count on anyone, and kicks her out. She keeps pausing every few steps, and he has to tell her to leave like three times before she finally goes through the door.

I don’t know why I liked Marcos and Lujan together so much when I was 18. I mean, I guess they were cute for like the five minutes they were together in season 1 — and I think the tomboy/shy geek pairing was really novel at first — but that’s literally it. At this point, I can’t even get excited over the thought of them getting back together, because he’s such a jerk and honestly, Lujan really is way too up in his personal life. They’re terrible together.

Meanwhile, the girls plus Paloma and sans Vico go back to school. Lola and Augustina are sitting backwards in the front seat — leaning against the dashboard — which seems incredibly unsafe and really something the driver should say something about? They’re right next to you, dude! There I go again, expecting competence from any of these adults.

Marizza tries to needle Paloma about the guy she likes, and she offers to wingman for her when they get back to school. Paloma’s like, “Oh, no need, he’s already my boyfriend!” It finally, FINALLY comes out that Diego is Paloma’s boyfriend. Marizza is shocked, for some reason. Marizza, girl, he only did everything in his power to keep you two apart and tried to not make it seem weird that Paloma was all over him.

The boys have made it back to school, and they product place Lays potato chips for a bit. Do Lays really even need product placement? Whatever. They talk about how the Uruguayans body checked Pablo, and Rocco mentions that he got their dirty playing tactics on tape. He shows them the footage on his camera, and they’re all, “Wow, you had a really good vantage point considering you were on the field, playing.” Anyway, so they’re just reusing the earlier footage from the show and we’re supposed to believe Rocco shot it. Whatever. They show the tape to Blas, who takes it and says he’ll show it to Dunoff. We have no reason to believe that Blas doesn’t actually want to win the rugby tournament, but I am suspicious anyway just because of literally all of Blas’s actions. Everyone cheers for Rocco. See, they like him now because he rejected his earlier interest in anti-conformism and plays sports like the rest of them now.

The girls come back to school. Lola wants to stick around and watch the implosion of Marizza and Diego’s relationship (hee), but Augustina drags her off. Augustina ruins everything. She and Guido deserve each other. Paloma, for her part, still doesn’t know that Diego was cheating on her with Marizza — she’s actually quite sympathetic to Marizza, thinking that Marizza just had a crush on Diego and he didn’t tell her that he already had a girlfriend. You’re half right, Paloma. Marizza, for some reason, is having emo flashbacks to all the good times with Diego, like we’re supposed to believe that this relationship mattered at all to her. Marizza doesn’t tell Paloma that Diego was two-timing them, and instead wanders off sadly.

Papa B, his girlfriend, and Javier arrive at Elite Way. Javier BSes that he should wait outside to give them some space, re: Pablo and the girlfriend reveal. BUT PABLO ALREADY KNOWS. Oh my God, whatever. Papa B thinks Javier’s a real swell kid for being so respectful. Presumably he only enjoys abusing his biological children. Papa B’s girlfriend muses that she hopes Javier and Pablo get along, because Javier’s a little socially stunted. That’s a very polite interpretation of him thinking it’s okay to grab a random girl’s boobs right after he meets her. Papa B says Pablo isn’t a good influence, because he’s ~rebelde~. Drink!

As soon as they walk away, Javier lights up a cigeratte, to prove how un-swell he really is. Yeah, smoking is what makes him evil, not the part where he pretended to be blind to molest a girl!

Sonia fusses over Papa C’s injuries, and Papa C’s like, “You’re cute and all, but you really gotta grow up with these revenge schemes.” He’s not wrong. Sonia says that she’s working on being more mature: and for a start, she’s decided to tell Marizza about her real dad. Note that she’s decided to do it, not that she’s actually done it, or will do it anytime soon. Papa C is happy about this, and says he’ll support her since she’s freaked out about it. They exchange “I love you”s and make out. Aw!

Less aw: having to hang out with awful Diego. Paloma finds him, and tells him that she came back with the cheerleading squad, and she really likes that girl Marizza! Weirdly, Paloma and Diego pronounce her name like it’s “Mariza”, not “Maritza”, which is something that the show has always sort of waffled over but they usually stick to “Maritza.” Whatever. Paloma asks why Marizza thought that they were cousins — although no worries, she set her straight! Diego gets mad at Paloma for blowing his cover when he’s trying to cheat on her. The sheer audacity of this kid. And he’s not even a main character!

Vico and Tato go for a walk together, and she asks what exactly he does for a living. “I sell things,” he says. Vico’s like, “Okay…what things?” Tato’s like, “You know…things. All kinds of things.” Not suspicious at all! He elaborates to say that he sells stuff like watches, phones — you know, your classic sketchy guy on the street. For some reason, that doesn’t weird Vico out at all. I think I’ve told this story before, but when I was in grammar school, there was a kid a grade lower than me who sold cell phones on the playground. I thought it was normal at the time, but in retrospect I’m like, “Where the hell did a 12-year-old get all those phones?” And who the hell was buying them from him?

Anyway, Tato runs off in the middle of their date AGAIN to get some shady goods. He comes back this time, though, with a bunch of watches. Vico insists on seeing them, and notes that they’re all broken. She realizes the watches are stolen, and she’s like, “Nothing about you indicated that you were up to no good!” She refuses to be involved with any more of his tomfoolery and storms off.

Marizza tells Laura that Paloma isn’t really Diego’s cousin, and Laura runs off to tell Lujan. Lujan immediately wants to go kick Diego’s ass, but Laura holds her back, for some reason. “Poor Marizza,” Lujan sighs. Then she cackles: “And poor Diego!” HEE! Lujan says that Marizza might not want to solve this with violence — since when? — but Lujan definitely does. Diego passes by their room looking for Marizza, and Lujan heavily implies that Marizza’s hanging out with another guy, before waltzing off.

Blas brings the rival rugby coach to Dunoff to settle the cheating issue. Hmm, will Dunoff side with the school he works at, or will he brownnose so hard that he sides with the opposing school? You can never tell with him! That’s what puts the dramatic tension in this scene! The rival rugby coach brings up that Gloria locked him in a car, which sufficiently distracts Dunoff. He goes to yell at her, and Gloria tries to explain that the rugby coach is a fuckboy who played with her heart and took advantage of her 30 years of perpetual loneliness, but Dunoff won’t hear any of it. He fires Gloria.

Pablo, Mia, and Manuel go off to…rehearse? It’s not clear. Papa B intercepts them, and introduces Pablo to his girlfriend (Ines). Oh, wait, I just realized that maybe Pablo hasn’t met her. Maybe Pablo met Papa B’s old girlfriend, who he dumped after she asked him to like, put effort into their relationship. Whatever. She’s nice enough, but then Papa B notices that Pablo’s holding his guitar, and wants to know where he’s going with that. “What guitar?” derps Pablo. Hee. Manuel and Mia cover for him, saying that it’s Manuel’s guitar and they were about to go out and sing some sappy love songs together. Papa B insists that Pablo come with him to meet Javier.

Javier’s still out smoking in a tree. Some ash from his cigarette falls on Marizza, who’s sitting under the tree. She goes after him with a random broom that’s just lying there, but tragically, Papa B and Ines show up before she can shove him out of the tree. They gush over how Javier is an innocent angel and Marizza must have been up to no good, and Javier flips Marizza off as they walk away. Have I ever hated a character this fast before? I think even Blas acted normal for an episode before he showed his true evil ways.

Papa B and Ines introduce Pablo and Javier. Ines is all, “Did you know Javier has an apartment right next to yours? What a coincidence! You guys can hang out all the time and be best friends!”

Marcos does his homework in the not-library while Lujan stares sadly after him. She makes Laura go talk to him, but then Francisco interrupts to natter on about the rugby game. What the hell, that’s just rude, Francisco. And then he grabs Laura and kisses her against her will, again, some more. He’s awful. Blas comes up to Lujan while she’s staring at Marcos, and confronts her about sending Fake Luciano to his company. Lujan wants to know what happened to him, and Blas evil laughs that he doesn’t want to tell her. Oh, man. Fake Luciano is dead, guys. Lujan asks who Ricardo Fara was, and Blas storms out. Literally the second he leaves, Lujan sits down to google Ricardo Fara. She has to turn the computer tower on first, though, because this is the ’90s.

Augustina tries to buy back Guido’s love, but he snipes at her that he’s clearly too mature for her, and she can’t win him back. He goes back to his room and sees that she’s bought him a whole new stereo system. Tomás is like, “Well, since you’re not gonna forgive her, you should probably give it back,” and Guido’s like, “Nah man, I’m going to fuck with a 15-year-old girl emotionally AND keep her expensive present.” Fucking Guido! This all started because you couldn’t keep your mouth shut in the first place! Why is literally every guy on this show human garbage, except maybe for Papa C and sometimes Pablo?

Pablo goes to brunch or lunch or whatever with Papa B, Ines, and Javier. Javier spends the whole time sucking up to Papa B and going on about how he loves politics and hates rock music. What a coincidence! Then he whips out his report card right in front of Pablo, and Ines and Papa B gush over what a good student he is. Javier’s like, “And now I must leave to study, to keep up my excellent grades!” Pablo also BSes that he has to go study.

Marizza, Mia, and Manuel meet up at Pablo’s apartment for rehearsal. Mia and Manuel are making out while they wait for Pablo, and it’s hella uncomfortable for Marizza. It’s uncomfortable for me too, girl. Pablo shows up and he starts singing “Dije adios.” Marizza gets all emo remembering the good times with him, and walks out of rehearsal. Have these kids ever completed a full rehearsal together? One of them is always breaking down at the first hint of any romantic songs. Is this what being in ABBA was like? Pablo chases after Marizza, and Manuel’s like, “Oh hey, they’re gone, let’s make out.” For fuck’s sake, Manuel.

In the office, Gloria sobs over being fired. Sonia and Mama D come in and comfort her — Mama D asks what’s going on, and Sonia’s like, “Your husband is being a dumbass, as usual.” Heh. Dunoff comes out and is all, “Are you still here?” Mama D drags him into his office and yells at him for firing “the only efficient employee we have.” Okay, I feel bad for Gloria and all, but let’s not exaggerate, Mama D. They get into another screaming match, and Sonia’s like, “Yikes” and drags Gloria on out of there. Then Tomás comes in and overhears the fight, and he’s also like, “Yikes.” Pilar comes by to see her parents, and Tomás drags her out of there before she can hear her parents. Aw.

Javier goes to some skate park, which is the opposite of what he said he’d be doing. He brags to some random friend with bad eyebrows about how he totally pretended to be blind and copped a feel on this girl earlier. And what a coincidence, that girl happens to be walking by right now! Okay, in total fairness, Marizza stormed out of Pablo’s apartment, which is supposed to be nearby Javier’s. I hate that anything in this show makes sense right now. Javier’s all, “Let’s stalk her!” Pablo runs into them, and Javier’s like, “Oh hey, me and my friend were just out buying maps to study for geography. On our skateboards.” Pablo’s like, “Whatever. Have you seen Marizza?” Javier lies that he hasn’t. After Pablo leaves, Javier makes a bet with his friend that he can get with Marizza. Oh, a bet! That always ends well!

Tomás comforts Pilar about her parents, and Fernanda and Sol see them. Sol immediately wants to go tattle on them and get Tomás in trouble with Dunoff, but Fernanda points out that dragging Dunoff into things will just get her and Fernanda in trouble, too. Sol’s like, “Fair” and whines that she’s really off her game, on account of Leo dumping her. Fernanda’s like, “Whatever, he’ll come crawling back,” and then of course Leo shows up at that very moment. Everyone in this episode is really good about popping up right when they’re mentioned. Leo tells Sol that he’s here to see Feli, not her. Whatever. We’ve been here before, Leo!

Guido comes to talk to Augustina, and he might actually be in the process of doing the right thing and telling her to stop buying him shit. We’ll never know, because Augustina is like, “You liked my gift! That means we’re back together!” and sticks her tongue down his throat. Augustina, you are going to be real embarrassed by yourself in 10 years.

We cut from Guido and Augustina making out to Mia and Manuel making out. That’s a lateral movement at the very best. Mia’s phone rings, interrupting them, and Manuel is a whiny dick about it as usual. She picks up and hands the phone to Manuel, saying that it’s Sabrina. Uh-oh.

Javier intercepts Marizza and grabs her and makes out with her on the street. Dude! What is with all the sexual harassment in this episode?
