Rebelde Way 1×136: What You Really Really Want

Opening monologue: You know what? I know I’m only three episodes to the end, but I’m going to stop doing these, too. They’re really corny and never have anything to do with the episode. I’m running out of ways to paraphrase, “You’ll have struggles in your life but you can get through them by being ~rebelde.”

Previously on Rebelde Way: Erreway finally gave their much-anticipated concert at the Gran Rex. It was a pretty big deal, seeing as they’ve been working towards success for the band for most of the show, and the power of music is a central theme in their lives, and it’s one of the biggest theaters in the country. Surely it warranted a good chunk of the last episode and this one?

Yeah, no. They sang “Rebelde Way” and that was it. The next day, everyone at school is all excited to see Pablo in the cafeteria, but his buzz is quickly harshed when Guido shows him a newspaper, saying that Papa B has put off his final campaign rally.

Meanwhile, Sonia’s sent Marizza flowers after the show, and all her proud messages are actually quite sweet. Marizza’s still pissed, though, that Sonia interfered with her and Simon’s relationship. Lujan and Luna point out that there’s a bigger issue at hand: Nico proposed to Luna, and she is very legitimately considering getting married at the age of 15. Oh, no, wait, she’s not considering it: she’s already said yes! OH MY GOD, LUNA. Your life! Your choices! She shows them her engagement ring (Marizza: “It’s ugly.” HEE!) and they all break down squealing. Lujan, God love her, recovers first: “Aren’t you a little young to be getting married?” Marizza’s like, “Of course she isn’t!”, but I mean, Marizza thinks she’s in competition with her own mother for male attention, so maybe Luna shouldn’t take her advice. Luna tells them that she and Nico are going to move to San Luis to be closer to her sister. Marizza’s like, “Hold up, you can’t drop out of high school,” because somehow she thought that they were just going to get married and come right back?

Over at Casa Bustamante, Papa B still hasn’t recovered from his cold. Life is rough, Papa B. He’s mad that Mama B hid Pablo’s illicit pop music career from him. Mama B tries to tell him that music makes Pablo happy, and Papa B’s like, “My son being a teen pop star will RUIN MY CAREER!” He threatens that soon Mama B and Pablo will learn who Papa B really is. An abuser? Because they already know that.

Manuel shows up to Casa Colucci, and cries all over Papa C about how Papa Aguirre sucked and Papa C is a way better dad. Papa C’s like, “Yikes.” He and Manuel have a deep talk about how everyone fucks up in their lives — like Papa Aguirre made a bad business deal and committed suicide over it, and Manuel came to Argentina to revenge but ended up just repeated high school. We’ve all been there! Papa C’s like, “Besides, you didn’t even come close to stabbing me.” They make up and hug it out, an spend the rest of the day watching sports with Peter. God bless.

Mansilla’s at some cafe, and Renata randomly rocks up and is like, “What’s up, let’s have lunch together.” How did she even find him? Whatever. She asks how his mysterious, literally-never-been-explained project is going, with the middle school delinquents and Rosario. Mansilla calls Rosario “Rosi”, which Renata doesn’t like at all. A flower seller walks by and Mansilla buys some flowers, and Renata glares at him. I guess she thinks he’s buying them for Rosario? This whole scene makes very little sense.

Marizza is still in the laundry room. My God, if there were ever a time for Sonia to get her overdramatic shriek on about people mistreating her daughter, this would be it. Sadly, she has to get saved by Simon, of all people. He tells her he can’t stay, as Simon Jr. is sick. It looks like it might occur to Marizza that hitching her dramatic, attention-starved 15-year-old wagon to a guy whose first priority will always be his kid is not the greatest idea. (I mean, I’m not even saying that to insult Marizza; it’s true of her and nearly everyone else in that school.) She tells Simon that Not-Wife asked her to leave him, and Simon’s like, “Dammit, now I’ll have to find some other high school girl to manipulate into a relationship.” Just kidding, Marizza still doesn’t love herself to break up with him. They make their plans to go to Machu Picchu, because I’m sure Not-Wife will love being ditched with Simon Jr. while Simon fucks around on vacation. I’d say he’s the worst, but then the next scene features Blas.

Maybe she wants to stay with him because she thinks no one else will want to match stripes with her.

Blas rolls up to creep on Mia at her locker. He stands waaaaay too close to her and touches her hair and asks if she wants to “celebrate” Erreway’s success with him. God, he’s gross. Mia tries to blow him off, but he pushes her into agreeing to go out with him.

In the cafeteria, Feli’s recovering from her ED, Lujan is looking for Marcos, and everyone is enjoying some good laughs. Fun times! Then Papa B rolls in to see Pablo, and he’s like, “So let’s talk about this Erreway show last night.” Everyone’s like, “Yikes,” and Papa B’s all, “What are you all laughing at?!” It’s meant to be scary, but he hasn’t gotten over his cold, so he’s basically whispering his threats to the whole cafeteria. He starts reaming Pablo out, and even Lujan jumps in to defend him (aw! I love when Lujan uses her fists of fury for good!). Lujan convinces Papa B to take it outside, and Pablo’s like, “Well, it was nice knowing you guys.” Guido and Tomás go with him to back him up. Aw. So they go…to Pablo’s room, where he hides and makes plans to run away. Because it worked out so well the last time he tried it?

Luna and Nico are at some cafe somewhere, and Luna tells Nico she’s torn between two martyrdom causes: on the one hand, she wants to go to San Luis and marry Nico and devote herself to Flor; on the other hand, Marizza wants her to stay at Elite Way so Luna can keep enable her. Tough choices, man. Anyway, apparently this cafe meeting is to break the news to his parents, which we knew was gonna be a bad idea even before they did it. Nico’s mom faints dead away. Man, Nico cannot stop killing his parents, can he?

(Side note: at first, Nico’s mom thinks he got that scholarship to study in the US. What a throwback to the very first episode, which was the only time it was ever mentioned, and then Nico never acted like a student who was chasing after a serious scholarship ever again.)

Back in the cafeteria, everyone’s like, “Wow, Pablo’s dad is hella abusive. Rough life.” Speaking of whom! Papa B storms in. “WHERE IS MY SON?” he whispers at them. Pablo and Guido run in and tell him that Pablo’s run away. “I’M GOING TO KILL HIM!” Papa B whispers. He leaves his cell phone on one of the tables, and Lujan picks it up.

At the cafe, Nico’s mom has recovered. “I didn’t think you’d react so badly,” Luna derps. Nico’s parents leave, and his mother is all, “I’ll never accept this marriage! You are dead to me!”, like she’s Reb Tevye. Nico’s all, “I can’t believe you’re not taking this well!”

Lujan and Vico muse over Pablo’s shitty home life. Aw, I love when these two hang out. They wonder where he could’ve gone, and we cut to Pablo crashing into the laundry room to hide with Marizza. Hee. He tells her that he needs her help escaping from his abusive father, and she snips, “You don’t deserve it.” His dad is abusive, Marizza, Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, she hides him when Blas comes in, and lets him hang out in the laundry basket with her. Aw.

Question: what do they do if Marizza has to use the bathroom? I’m just asking.

Papa C sends Sonia flowers, thanking her for dragging him to the Gran Rex to watch Mia perform. Sonia gets all pissed and throws the flowers out. Sonia gets a threatening text from Marizza (there was a scene earlier of Lujan sending it, saying Marizza asked her to), and wails that Marizza’s mad that Sonia interfered with her and Simon’s relationship. As usual, Sonia’s afraid of her own daughter, and decides to go hide out with Papa C.

Marcos comes back to school and shows Lujan that he got them tickets to go to Machu Picchu. She’s like, “Having a rich boyfriend is awesome!” Hilariously, Marcos is like, “Do you think Marizza will be upset that we’re tagging along?” and Lujan’s like, “Why would she be upset?” Heh.

Manuel and Papa C are still watching the game when Sonia rolls in. They try to blow her off, but she plants herself there and joins them. Hee. Quite a bit of this episode is genuinely funny, I must say. But not the next bit, which is some weird sexist BS about Sonia not ~getting the fine art of football and annoying the menfolk with her talking, until they kick her out.

Luna and Nico go back to school, and Luna’s like, “I feel kind of bad that we made your mom pass out,” and Nico’s like, “Whatever.” Lujan and Marcos roll in, and Lujan shows them Papa B’s cell phone. “Someone left him a message,” she says, which is how he found out that Erreway was performing. You’d think Lujan would be able to recognize Blas’s voice, given how often he likes to roll up and verbally abuse her. For some reason, Marcos has to like, “So…let’s just listen to the message and see whose voice it is.” How did Lujan know that someone left Papa B a message exposing Erreway if she never heard it? Oh my God, whatever. Lujan listens to it and says it sounds like Blas. For some reason, Nico’s like, “That’s impossible!” Is it, Nico? Is it really? Lujan realizes that Mia must be involved somehow. I love Girl Detective Lujan.

Mia and Blas come back to school while everyone else is watching a movie in the lounge. Blas gets all excited: “Look, it’s Jackie Chan!” What? I don’t know. He gets all pissed that Mia isn’t fawning over him like usual, and he’s like, “I want to go back to how we were before, before you realized I’m a creepy predator.” Thankfully, Feli runs up and drags Mia off. Foiled again, Blas!

Papa B goes back to Casa Bustamante to yell about Pablo to Mama B some more. He wants to send Pablo to military school next year and Mama B’s like, “Don’t be silly, then we won’t have another season of this show.” He threatens to have Mama B declared insane so he can send Pablo away without her permission.

Feli and Vico tell Mia that Papa B knows about Erreway, and Mia wonders who could’ve sold them out. Mia! You’re smarter than this, at least some of the time! Then Nico, Marcos, and Lujan all bust in to ask Mia to ID the voice on the phone. I like how all three of them have to show up for this. Mia confirms that it’s Blas on the phone, and she’s all shocked for some reason that Blas would do such a dastardly thing. Because he’s so pure of heart, right?

The next day, Mia is still all distraught over the Blas revelation. She doesn’t want to leave the room and potentially run into him, and Vico’s like, “Whatever, he abuses everyone at this school, you’re not special.” Heh. Manuel comes storming in and yells at Mia that he told her Blas was no good. He says they have to find a way to get Blas fired, and asks if Mia will help with his plan. Mia agrees.

In the teachers’ lounge — which is suddenly lit completely differently — Renata is all emo. She blows off Hilda’s questioning by saying she spent the weekend working, and Hilda heaves a huge sigh about how if you spend your life working, you’ll miss out on doing what you want, and then your ex-boyfriend from your younger days will come back and start pestering you to have fun and never leave you alone.

“And then he’ll do weird stuff like sneak into your house and convince you that you’re still in love even though you haven’t seen each other in fifty years, so you should really just get it over with now.”

Pablo and Marizza fall asleep on each other in the laundry room. Aw! Dammit, they’re so cute together 🙁 Marizza wakes up first and is all twitterpated by being so close to him.

Papa B goes to complain to Dunoff about Erreway. He’s finally gotten over his cold, and is speaking at a normal volume again. He’s like, “You must make sure they NEVER PLAY MUSIC AGAIN!” Because rock and roll is the devil’s music! But surely Papa B knows by now that Erreway is like…Avril Lavigne levels of edgy, at their most hardcore? You can’t tell me he was threatened by the undertones of social revolution in “Sweet Baby.” Anyway, then Gloria runs in and says Pablo is missing.

Hilda tells the class that it’s the last week of school, so absent students or no absent students, they’re going to take the exam. It’s the last week already? I mean, I know there’s only 3 episodes left, but time has no meaning on this show. But instead of quizzing them on history, she reads them an essay about her own sad life, and how they were totally right to shove her together with Hilario even though she repeatedly told them not to. As a reward, they’re not going to have a final exam, and they’re not going to get tested on history at all, even though that’s what this class is. I bet Elite Way’s report cards don’t have subjects at all, and students get graded on things like, “Ability to Meddle” and “How Not to Take No For an Answer.” Fernanda’s like, “That’s nice and all, but Hilario’s already left.” Hilda’s all crushed.

Sonia comes to see Papa C in the morning, and they feed each other graham crackers and are weirdly flirty. Where did this come from? I don’t know. They almost kiss, but then Peter interrupts them. He tells them all the parents have to go to Elite Way for a meeting now. I like how it never occurs to Dunoff that the kids’ parents might know and not care that their children have a crappy garage band.

Nico’s mom comes to see Sandra. She’s all like, “I’ll never let your niece marry my son!” and Sandra’s like, “Say what?”

Manuel’s plan apparently involves annoying the shit out of Blas — first he drags Mia off when Blas is trying to talk to her, and then Lujan runs up to ask him about visiting Marizza. The final stage is when Manuel ropes Simon into their plan, which involves getting him to photograph Blas kissing Mia. Mia finally stands up for herself and refuses to let Blas perv on her for the greater good (the greater good!).

Encouraged by Hilda’s advice, Renata goes to see Mansilla. She’s like, “YOLO” (I mean, that’s really basically what Hilda’s advice was) and kisses him. Mansilla kisses her back, then Renata’s like, “Anyway, let’s talk about Rosario.” Mansilla’s like, “Sure, we’re not a thing, whatever you want,” but then Gloria’s like, “Oh hey Mansilla, Rosario says they just got to Chaco,” and Renata’s like, “Did she spend the weekend with you?” Oh, Mansilla.

Marizza tells Pablo he has to stand up to his dad. Pablo’s like, “No way,” and then they hear Dunoff and Papa B approaching. For some reason, Pablo can’t fit himself into any of the washing machines (it’s not hard, Pablo! Jesus!) and it doesn’t occur to them to hide him in the cabinet where he hid earlier. So they basically just stand there in the middle of the room, waiting to get caught. Nice job, guys.
